Yorkie/Jack Russell - Trinket is a keeper!
 

Hello to all - -

I've always been curious about my little mutt Trinket, and so I googled "yorkie jack russell mix" and came across this very fun website.

Trinket was on her way to the dog pound when I was lucky enough to meet her. She was 5 months old and her attorney owners no longer wanted her. She was litter-trained and living in a 1/2 bathroom all by herself. Trinket's "parents" couldn't dispose of her themselves so they had their daughter (my friend Lisa) do it for them. Lisa knew if I met Trinket, she'd never make it to the pound - she was right.

Trinket was very difficult to re-potty train. The poor dog was so confused - she thought it was ok to pee in the house, and she frequently ate her own poop. We were successful after several weeks of intense umbilical cord training (she was tied on a short lead to my belt loop, and went every where with me). She is now a very happy, well-adjusted family pet.
She doesn't bark or whine (except when playing or when she wants something). She is very intuitive and sharp - she doesn't miss a thing and learns quickly. She not a timid dog. She likes to chase and play with other dogs and isn't afraid of any size dog. She has that terrier instinct and wants to shake to death anything she gets her teeth on (including my 2 year old's baby dolls!).

I'm curious about her breed(s) - is this mix common? She looks more like a Yorkie (face, ears, coloring) but has coarse hair. She is the funniest looking, cute little dog with uneven hair lengths (long in the back and short in the front with a lion mane that I have to trim). So many people ask about her when we're out and I never know what to tell them - Is she an accident, or do people breed this specific mix on purpose?

That's a touching story, I'm glad it all worked out, that umbilical cord training sounds like it'd work well for older dogs (non puppies). Welcome to YorkieTalk! I haven't heard of that mix much myself, but if you can, post up some pictures, we'd love to see Trinket!

Trinket sound like a doll and is very lucky to have you all. Rescue dog I think know they were saved and are the best dogs. I have a chow-mix rescue that was dumped when she was about 6 months old. Lucky is 15 years old now is the reason I have two yorkies. She missed Max my yorkie so much when he passed away that I got Maddie and then along came Rudy. Ahhh, I'm so glad that you were able to save Trinket. How old is she now?? Hurry up with the pictures, I can't wait to see what she looks like! :)

Thank you for the warm welcome. I must admit, I was skeptical about posting knowing Trinket is just a mutt (though sometimes they're the best pets of all!).

Trinket (aka: Krinket - by my 2yo, and Stinket - by my husband) is about 20 months old. She is a hilarious dog with SO many expressions. She is quick and spunky but also tolerant and sweet. I taught her to roll over in just a few hours, and she responds to many hand signals and snaps - like I said before she's really intuitive - it's very neat! There's just one thing I can't stand about her...she gets so excited when she meets people and she licks and jumps up. It's like she can't help herself - she licks hands, faces, feet...anything she can get her tongue on. Even when I try to correct her...it's no use unless I actually get down and hold her mouth closed with a low growl noooooooooooo. Then it hurts her feelings and the person says, "Ohhhhhhh it's ok" - - then Trinket gets excited and starts all over again! Some of this must be due to her young age, but it really drives me crazy that she jumps up and licks every single person we see. She even does it when she's on her leash. Other than that, she is well-behaved and listens to commands.

My current goal is teaching her to ask to go outside. We let her out every few hours but once in a while she has an accident (with poop only). I'm positive if she knew how to ask, this wouldn't happen again. We're moving into our brand new house and I'm worried about occasional accidents. How do I teach her to ask - with a scratch, or a bell, or some other signal???

i have heard of people using bells on doors to "ask", but i dont really know much about it, i am training my yorkie on pee pee pads

About the licking: that's the Yorkie in Trinket! After awhile you just get used to being bathed all the time by a long wet tongue. Higgins especially likes to wash my ears and sometimes I think that tongue will reach my brain through my ear canal! When he was a baby and puppy biting, we used to say "No biting! Just kisses!" and he would start to lick us......so they're really kisses.......and who can refuse a kiss????

You're right about the shake-everything-to-death terrier part. They all do it! Tell me, does Trinket shred every bit of paper she can get her little teeth on? That's another Yorkie favorite thing to do.......

first of all.... I believe there is a special place in heaven for those people who will accept an unwanted dog.
second... if the people of this world were more like dogs there would never be violence and wars. It is amazing how they can forgive those who have mistreated them. All they want is a little of your time and a little of your love.
Heck, next time I run into a foreign official I might think about jumping up and licking his face too. It might help keep peace in the world!
If you think about it most breeds started out as a mix. (look at the silkie terriers, etc.).
As far as them letting you know when they need to go out for potty is concerned. The way I accompished this was to watch for their sign. I watched what time of day that they did their business and started taking them out just that time of day and stayed out until they were done. They soon gave me their own signal when they needed to go. (They trained me).
Buckeye will come and scratch on my leg if i don't notice him at the door. Ahia hasn't got to that stage yet. She just stands at the door and hopes that I notice her. If I don't she will find her own spot. So I have learned to keep an eye on her at all times.

Nicole, welcome and what a wonderful thing you did for that little baby! Don't worry about the licking .... it's a Yorkie thing ... caught Toto licking a doorfacing one day! :confused: I think this too shall pass. We taught her the command "Puppy Kisses" ... so she does it on command. Thought it might stop her from doing it voluntarily ... slowed her down but didn't stop her! ;) They're just so sweet ... we don't mind!

looks just like the "lion" you described....... do you cut the fur at all to make some areas shorter? or is that a la natural? trinket is a cutey :D

Yes I do give Trinket a trim here and there - she looks kind of goofy if I let that mane get long. I just took some pictures the other day and I must get them uploaded so I can share. The more I read this website and look at all the cute pictures of Yorkies, the more I want another dog. It's horrible!

Trinket, I know how you feel. I've had Hercules for almost 2 months and I already want another one for him to play with!! They are very addicting little guys (or gals)!! :p

I agree with the rest of the crew here at Yorkie Talk, Trinket is adorable!! I trained my dog Bell to ring a bell to tell me she needs to go out. Or actually she trained me. The vet told me to hang a bell near the door and ring it everytime I went out with her. Well I did that for about 2 weeks and she didn't do anything and then one day she sat by the door and kept hitting the bell and now thats how she tells me. Its great except when your in the middle of something and she rings her bell and you stop everything to let her out and you find out she didn't really want to go out she just wanted to put her nose out or something. Trinket sounds like a smart dog you probably won't have any problems teaching her. Good Luck Oh and my Bell (my dog) is just the same way with the licks and kisses she gives them to everyone!!

I don't see much of the Jack Russell coloring in her. I guess maybe her white chest is from the JR? She does have that goofy mane I have to trim and that is white-tipped :) I think this summer I'll trim under her belly too, and maybe even cut her short all over.

She is a great dog and we're lucky that those other people didn't want her!
Her latest trick is "dancing". She dances on her hind legs, then sits down and waits for a treat. Sometimes she gets tricky and rolls over, then dances - she is too funny!

Hi, Im new to this site too! I just got a yorkie/jack russell mix the runt of the litter well one of the smaller dogs apparently there was two runts? I love him so much!!! :) he has been such a delight minus the teething and peeing all over the place! We had a couple of health issues he had the kennel cough and bronchitis as per the vet. he was like a baby the first week i had him having to give him aerosol &medications. im now going 3 weeks now with him and everythings been great. I was just googling what mix he can be i know he is a yorkie but i thought it was chorkie but than i saw your post and i googled russels mixed with yorkie and they look about the same. The breeder didnt intenionally breed their dog it was one of those mistakes where your dog gets ahold of another dog lol. the breeder is family by the way. Anywho i hope i get the hang of this site and responses marley is a hand full of joy veryyy hyper and bites as if he wants to rip my face/fingers off. he is now 9 weeks old. im wondering he has had 2 vists to the vet so far and they've given him a dewormer. he has thrown up today and pooped worms some poop piles had a bunch of dead worms. and one pile had one live worm. is that good that he is pooping them does that mean the dewormer working right or is he suppose to have NO worms? oh and im taking him to petsmart to start training classes potty training has been haarrddd he did pee on the wee wee pad the first time but now he pees where ever and sometimes on the pad. i feel like as if im not training him well and worst thing is im moving in about 3 weeks so im going to have to retrain him! :( i hope you all didnt mind my essay! lol. im so excited i love marley :) i cant wait to learn from all of your posts. :)

yes if you gave him a dewormer he should be defecating them.
I also have a yorkie Rusell, my son rescued a jack rusell girl, the rescue assured us she was spayed and guess what, she was NOT, my yorkie stud got to her and we had a litter, I kept the runt, my hubby fell for him after we had to hand feed him for a month..

Your daughter AND Trinket are both just adorable! Maybe it's good that you have a JR mix to go along with a two year old this time around. ;) And speaking of mixes...........aren't they all!! :thumbup::thumbup:

Trinket is adorable!!!!!! :) when I was in the fourth grade my parents and I had a jack russell. Murphy was her name. She was a terrier through and through.
