Loosing a dream dog I got my yorkie at 6 weeks. I've been raised around dogs my whole life and all have been little dogs. I wanted so much for this dog. My husband hated the idea of spending that kind of money on a puppy. He did anyways cause he knew what it meant to me. ANd now not even having him 2 weeks I've lost him. He died early this morning after spending two days at the vets office. I don't know what to do. He was my baby. Now my husband is saying I can never have another one cause yorkies are just going to die anyways. The vet said they weren't sure exactly what was wrong. He jusat kept having seizures and wouldn't go to the bathroom regularily. ANd he was throwing up. He ate and drank water he just seemed unaturally quiet since we first got him. Everyone kept telling me it was just because he was a puppy. But puppys are supposed to play and be a little active not sleep ALL the time. I thought for one brief moment I had gotten my dream dog. The one I've been wanting since I was a little girl. |
I'm so sorry for youe loss:( Did you get the puppy from a breeder? Do they offer a health guarentee? |
yes and not after 24 hrs |
they didn't offer you like a 1 yr health gurantee against genetic defects? Have you contacted the breeder to let them know? Sometimes breeders will replace the pup if it was a genetic thing |
yes I did they were completly uncorapotive. I think I made a poor choice in choosing that breeder but their weren't a lot of options in my area. |

See now thats where I feel like an idiot. I didn't get a contract. I feel seriously horrible. I already buried him this morning. I don't know what to do. I didn't want a dog to breed. I didn't want to make money. I just wanted a loyal loving companion for when my husband was gone. I feel so stupid. |

you do have rights. you need to write a letter to the breeder and to the spca or the local animal authority in your area. this is NOT right. there are lemon laws in most areas. you need to get your money back!!!!!!!!!!! getting a puppy at 6weeks of age is tooooo young. most yorkies stay at home until they are at least 10-12 weeks. you need to do something. please do something about this. we need to stop these types of breeders. |
I am so sorry for your loss :( I do agree with Lisa, you need to follow up with the breeder to stand behind the little one that you lost. |
I agree. You have right. Report her or take her to small claims court. Keep your vet reciepts. :( I know its hard but we have to do something so it won't happen again. Just an opinion. :) |
If you received a health guarantee I would be taking her to small claims court. I know that's no consolation for your loss, which I'm so sorry for. I'm sure your hubby will come around, especially if you can recoup some of your money. If you get another one I'd buy it from one of our breeders. |
let us know who she is and we can send notes advising we are aware of this. if she thinks she is getting a bad reputation, maybe she will come around. |

I'm so sorry for your loss but don't give up on Yorkies they ate wonderful!! |
Oh honey, I am so sorry for you loss. |
First of all, I am SO sorry for your loss:unlove: I know your heart is just broken:( Secondly, did I read that right, did you get this puppy at 6 weeks of age?!?! If so, that breeder is completely out of their mind, and THEY are to blame for the puppy not surviving. That is way too young to be away from Momma:( Big hugs to you. I'd be beating that breeder's door down if she doesn't want to help you with the medical costs and/or replacing the puppy (with a 12 week old puppy, no younger than that). |
i got him from a gentleman out in a little town in al |
Puppy Lemon Law Hey there. I'm sorry for your loss. I do have some advice for you that has not been mentioned yet and that is the Puppy Lemon Law. I'm not sure what the lemon law is regarding sick puppies in your state, but I do know that most states have them. In NJ the state I am in states that the breeder/store has to pay the cost of vet bills up to the cost of the puppy - that's if the dog survives and you choose to keep him or her and should the dog die you are entitled to the cost of the vet bills PLUS the cost of the dog. Please, research the Puppy Lemon Law in your state of Tennesse and also in Alabama since this is where you said your puppy was purchased. I believe you would have to go by the law that Alabama has established since this is where the deal took place. You do not need a contract to enforce this law. You do need however, proof that your puppy came from this breeder, such as a cancelled check or receipt of payment to the breeder for the pup. I know that others have already stated this to you but in the future you should NEVER take a pup from ANYONE that is willing to sell at six weeks of age. The minimum your pup should be at the time you take her/him home is ten weeks and ideally 12 week, especially if they are under 2 lbs. AND, you need to keep Nutrical on hand or Karo Syrup because young small Yorkies are suseptible to something called Hyperglycemia. My vet suggests giving a ribbon size amount of Nutical several times a day to prevent the Hyperglycemia. Yorkies will USUALLY not always but usually outgrown this by the time they are one years old. Also, it's important to feed a young Yorkie several times a day (Small amounts - usually about a tablespoon) and to keep a high quality dry food out all day (Puppy - for small breeds) for them to munch on in between meals and of course fresh water. I wish you the best and I hope you are able to get your $$ back and find a reputable breeder to work with. YT has many reputable breeders and I'm sure someone on here will be able to help you with another. Elaine |
I'm so very sorry for your loss. I hope everything sorts out in your favor, but more so for your heart to heal. Those symptoms sound exactly like hypoglycemia. We went through that ordeal with Raja & almost lost him as well. |
Oh I am so sorry for your lose. I can't believe that the breeder allowed you to take a puppy at 6 weeks. Try and recoup some of your money, then talk to your hubby, or allow some of us talk or email him. Yorkies are wonderful and usually healthy dogs. As a small breeder, I have my male DNA tested, my 2 females at the vets for healthy visits before being bred, and I am very proud to say that we have had 23 free whelped very healthy puppies over the last 3 years and I keep in touch with new families. Our last litter was of 7 and I have 1 male yet to home, but I am not in a hurry...I only allow the best families to take my babies home. Please PM me if I can be of any help. If you need help finding a good breeder, I will research your area, or if you are planning a Fla trip, I know a little boy that would like to meet you and hubby, that might fit into your loving home. Please call on us here on YT, we will help you find a new healthy baby!! |
I am so sorry for your loss and I feel even more sorry for your husband. He is the one who has lost the most because he didn't have time to find out just how yorkies can worm their way into a man's heart. And now he doesn't want to let you have another because it's just going to die anyway. That is so sad. Most breeders will not allow their pups to leave until they are at least 10-12 weeks old and even longer if they are smaller. Most healthy yorkies can live 15 years or even longer. I feel your pain and pray you will find a loving yorkie companion in the future. I don't know what I would do without my troop and my husband loves them just as much as I do. |
I'm so so sorry for your loss. I know how hard it is to lose a yorkie. I agree that you should report this breeder, for one thing, she should have never sold you a 6 week old puppy! Yorkies need to stay with there mom till 10 -12 weeks of age. I'm so so sorry sweetie. |
I am so sorry for your loss. You need to contact the spca and the AKC and make as much noise as you can. 6 week old puppy? My God. That is not a breeder, that is a PUPPYMILL.....that cannot be an ETHICAL breeder. You can still have an autopsy done |
Thank u so much for all of ya'lls concern but if you read the whole thread you will find out I am the new mama of beautiful andy. I do miss teddy and think of him often which why i named my new little buisness after him. Thank you everyone. |
im so sorry for your loss but really you do need to fight this, somthing sounds really wrong with your breeder |

First of all, I'm also sorry for your loss..but, she said the puppy was eating and drinking, so I very much doubt she /he had hypoglycemia..I had a puppy that I almost lost to that once, and she wasn't eating or drinking..2nd of all, I know they say 12 weeks, I got my first yorkie at 6 weeks, and she is and always has been very well socialized and never had any problems..I didn't have a health gurantee with her, and was lucky she was healthy, but, I'm almost 99% sure that the lady I got her from would have replaced her with a puppy or full refund had something like that happened..she was even going to take her back when she was a few mos old, as I was told she would be 4 lbs full grown and was already that or more at 4 mos..I told her NO, she's staying here..but, please do check in Tennessee on their laws..I would let the guy you got the puppy from that if he doesn't replace him or give you your money back, he will be hearing from your atty. |

suing him would cost more then my 800 dollar dog was. Although I really was niave about puppy mills and I believe him was a small one and am looking into when I get back to alabama if he really is and how o go about shutting him down. For the safety of those dogs not my own benefit. I have my new little baby. But those dogs still concern me often. |
