My little Ty died Aug 26, Need information I lost my 2 year old yorkie this friday, Aug 26. He had a vet annual visit mon Aug 22, and given a clean bill of health. The vet told me Ty had one baby tooth that needed pulled and his teeth cleaned. I made the appointment for friday. I was called mid-day, procedure went well, I could pick him up at 4:30. I received a phone from the vet less than 2 hr later stating Ty was going into pulmonary edema and may not make it. My husband and I rushed to the vet's office, Ty was very ill. The vet told me Ty had went into cardiac arrest before the procedure started, He was given meds, CPR...once "they got him back" he was then putted to sleep for the elective procedure. I was not called concerning the cardiac arrest, given no reason for why it happened. I am so hurt. I feel the vet was not honest with me and I lost my Yorkie. Is there anyone I can report this to? Any suggestions would be appreicated. |
Oh how tragic to lose your baby this way. Sending prayers and hugs your way. Susan |
They went ahead and administered anesthesia for an elective procedure to a dog that had just had CARDIAC ARREST???!!!!???!!! Please tell me they did not do that!!! Please - I cannot think that a vet would do that!!! I cannot deal with the risk they were willing to take - and it ultimately apparently cost your little dog his life! HORRIBLE!!! Ask whatever vet associations he belongs to for an investigation into this unbelievable practice! I cannot believe any vet worth his salt would proceed to anesthetize under these circumstances! |
I'm so sorry you lost your little yorkie in this manner. I too, find it hard to believe, that he was sedated AFTER having gone into cardiac arrest and 'brought back'. I mean, what kind of Vet would do that? I like to think that mine would have called and said ' hey, little problem, here's what happenened; and we will NOT be doing an elective procedure today." It would seem much more likely (though still rare) that he suffered cardiac arrest DURING the procedure and after the anesthesia was administered. However, they called and said he was doing well . . . so I do not know. I'm so, so sorry for your loss. RIP little Ty.:littleang |

I would hope that had Tibbe gone into cardiac, my vet would have been given ICU treatment, Tibbe's cardiac status monitored and supported and he would be watched for a possible recurrence or stroke and a call placed to me to come to the vet ASAP so I could participate in his ongoing cardiac health status and be there for him, where I would want to be. They really had no idea what caused the arrest so should have stopped all planned surgery or whatever was planned and just monitored/treated that cardiac event and notified you immediately! Who in the world would go ahead with any procedure or x-ray or anything with a dog who's heart had just stopped without giving that event major treatment status unless the dog is bleeding to death or something like that without needed surgery? This cannot be normal vet procedure, can it????? |
I agree with the others. I KNOW my vet would never put one back to sleep after an episode like that. I am not the smartest cookie but I would have known better. I would also ask for an investigation(sp) And I would consult another vet with all my pets records to see what they say. If you can find one that will do that. SO SORRY for your loss. I believe your vet is responsible for the loss of your baby. So sad. I know your heart is breaking. Sending prayers your way.................Again I am so sorry |
So sorry for your loss! I can't imagine why the vet would continue with the procedure.....and, why they didn't call you and tell you about his cardiac arrest. |
This is horrible,my prayers are with you. I can't imagine the pain you are feeling and the loss of your baby. I can't believe a vet would do this. As much as I love my vet and used him for 15 years I would be extremely upset if this happened to one of mine. I am not sure what you need to do. |
call a dog law attorney something does not sound right to me. Why would you do a procedure on a dog that had cardiac arrest prior to the procedure. Get it in writing and tell them you want a copy of their files. good luck and best wishes. |
I'm so sorry. The vet was an a..h... to go ahead and do an elective procedure AFTER your dog went into cardiac arrest. He should not be practicing. He's very lucky it wasn't my dog. He wouldn't have to worry about being sued that would be the least of his worries. |

I am floored that a vet would actually do this - unless something got lost in translation somewhere. |
I am so hurt I was not called after the cardiac arrest. I would not have had the procedure done after that. Yes the cardiac arrest happened and then the procedure was done after he "recovered". Both my husband and I are nurses. We asked why the procedure was done after the arrest, why we were called, the answer we got, "well, that's hind sight." While standing at the table next to by baby the tech took his temp..his temp was 95..I asked why he was not under a warmer, answer, "we have him wrapped in a towel, I did have a hair dryer trying to get him warm but that was loud". He wasn't placed on a heating pad until I ask. It was awful...I had taken my dogs here for their annual exams for 2 years. They have never been sick. Ty was only 2y old. I don't want money. I want the vet to never do this to someone else. i feel so helpless. so heartbroken.... |
Well, I am no vet but I would be willing to make a good-sized bet that no elective surgery protocol in veterinary medicine states to prep for surgery, administer pre-op medications, time-out for cardiac resuscitation and stabilization, proceed with administering pre-op anesthesia and elective surgery!!! Call owner once pulmonary edema develops. I am so very sorry for your terrible loss and all the awful things that happened to your little Ty. I cannot imagine the pain that you are feeling but hopefully getting to the bottom of why he had to die and stopping it from happening again will help you some. God bless you. Rest in Peace, Baby Ty. |
Terribly sorry for your loss... |
Oh my, I am so so very sorry for the loss or your little Ty. I can't begin to imagine how you must be feeling. Sending prayers and hugs))) to you both. RIP sweet baby Ty. |
I'm so sorry for your loss. :( You can report this vet to the state veterinary board for investigation. If the board agrees with you, the vet will get a strike against their license (so owners will know there was a problem) and possibly a fine. It sounds like they gave they had premeded with a sedative/tranquilizer. Normal, but I wonder what drug they used. He probably reacted to that (before under the gas (although I wonder if they even use gas there with this kind of buiness going on). They may have just brought him back and then masked him down or something. Completely and totally unacceptable. They should have brought him back and watched or sent him straight to a specialty hospital and they should have recommended that all further procedures be done in a specialty hospital with an anesthesiologist and cardiologist available. I don't buy that they actually thought it was a good idea to go on. Also, if they don't have warming equipment, at a minimum they sure as heck should have hot water bottles there or a SnuggleSafe. Heart failure and electric shock (both of which could apply here) can cause pulmonary edema. Oxygen and drugs should have been given. |
I am so very, very sorry. |
There are no words for how angry I am at this vet for the loss of Ty. I am proud of you for wanting to let other people know what happened with this vet, even when you are still so broken hearted. Sending hugs to you. |
I am so very sorry for the senseless loss of your darling Ty. This was likely avoidable, which I think makes the loss even harder . There is no bringing him back, but I agree that measures should be taken to assure it doesn't happen again. |
I'm so sorry for your loss. Nothing you can do will replace that sweet pup. I'm normally not the litigious type, but that just sounds wrong. I would be irate. |
My deepest sympathy and my prayers for your broken heart. I have lost a dog unexpectedly because something unforseen happened during surgery. I was so distraught that I really didn't understand what the Vet was telling me. I talked to the Vet a few days later and that changed everything. It was not my fault. It was not her fault. It just happened. I honestly hope there is a misunderstanding about this. I find it hard to believe that any Vet would do a dental, if there were any signs that the dog had heart problems. Hugs for you. |
I am so sorry for your loss |
What a tragedy. I can't believe a vet would do something like that either. They would not even give Kayla her Bordatela (sp) shot, when she had a bad episode of CT. They really need to make it up to you even though nothing could replace your baby, but, they need to do something to make it right. Of course that would mean admitting fault, which they are not going to want to do. I am so sorry about little Ty. That just makes me sick. I would check into it and see what could be done because you sure don't want it to happen to someone else. He doesn't sound like he is much of a vet. Bless your heart, I know it hurts so bad. RIP little one. |
If this happened as the OP has now reported twice, including the thoughtless "hindsight" remark, this vet should no longer practice veterinary medicine. When you have no better judgment than to anesthetize a dog that has just had cardiac arrest for an elective procedure, you don't have the necessary mental acumen or discernment skill set to have the lives of people's dear pets under your care and control. |

You have experienced such a great and tragic loss, and in itself is something very difficult to bear. I am truly sorry for the loss of your baby. It never makes sense when you lose a baby so young, but to lose Ty when it could have been prevented makes it so much more difficult to comprehend or bear. I don't think there's any compensation or consolation that will help but I hope someone else can be spared the loss of their loved one that you have experienced because you are reporting this vet. My thoughts and prayers are with you. Please accept my deepest condolences on the loss of your precious Ty. |
I'm so sorry for your loss of Ty. Rest in peace, little one. |
Thanks everyone for your support. I am speaking to the vet Monday morning that owns the business and will try to get some answers. I know nothing will bring Ty back, I am just sick and angry over the way his died. I feel it was needless. This should never happen to anyone. Once again thanks for the support. |
I have spoken to the owner/senior vet. After he spoke to the staff he agreed the vet was wrong in alot of her decisions. I will be reporting her after I get a copy of his chart . |
