Where did you find your breeders? I'm sooo glad to have found this site! I've been looking on here for a couple of months now, and I decided it was time to join in on the fun.:) We are looking to get a Yorkie in about a year. I have two young children (5 and 7yrs) and I wanted to wait until they were a little older to get a puppy. My children are good with animals but I want to make sure that getting a puppy is a good experience all around (for us and the puppy!:) ). I noticed that several of you are from the Cinci, Dayton & Columbus area. I am from Troy (about 20 min north of Dayton). Can any of you tell me where you found your breeder? Are any of you still in contact with your breeder? This may be too early to find a breeder I'm not sure? I'm just really excited about the thought of getting a Yorkie, I sometimes get carried away!:) Thanks in advance for any advice!;) |
Hi & welcome to YT. I found my girl on puppyfind.com. It cost $5.99 to join but well worth it. There are several ohio breeders on here. That also list on puppyfind. I decided to go with a adult to skip all the puppy stuff. She's my baby & spoiled rotten. My kids are older 12 & 14. But have always been taught to be gentle w/animals or get your a** beat. Lots of great people on here. You might look in the 4sale or wanted section, just reading others posts can help. Or post a new thread. Welcome again fellow Ohioan, lol;) |
Thanks! Thanks for the response! I noticed that you live near Chillicothe. My mother-in-law lives in Chillicothe and we visit all the time. Nice area to live!:) I am looking forward to getting my Yorkie!;) |
So are you prepared for your pup. Lots of good info on here. I have several; carriers but actually use my stroller more. I use puppy pads & go outside. There was a really good deal on 200 pads somewhere?? I dont remember where. I get 100 for $27.99 from petsmart. this is my stroller you can get one on ebay now for around $50 w/shipping & all. I had a hard time finding a yorkie. It seemed by the puppy weight they were going to be 10lb adults-not yorkie standard. then I found my girl on puppyfind & she is just perfect to me. She was 11months old 3.5lbs (a little under weight) I have fattened her up to 4.4. OMG you know what, what kind of money can you spend, I was looking at a 2.6lb 2 yr old girl-beautiful, she's good with kids but at first she was asking $4500, I offered her $1000 because that was my budgeted amount, she said $3000, i finally looked else where then she said she would take $1000, but I had already got my girl & was happy with her. This yorkie is drop dead gorgeous. I will post pics if your interested & give you her email. I have thought about getting her but one is enough for me. She lives near cincinnati. the dogs name is lola, she is tinyyyy. |
Thanks! I'm not quite ready to buy yet. I would like to see the pics you mentioned though!:) I have gathered from all the reading that I have been doing that along with the puppy comes all the necessities, ie: the create, puppy pads, xpen, toys and so on. I'm sure the list is endless!:) It will be so fun to go shopping when we are ready for a puppy!:) |
Welcome to the group. Yorkies are great !!!! I am Mom to 6 Yorkies. One of my Yorkies I adopted 2 years ago from www.YTNR.com She is about 10 years old (exact DOB is unknown) you can read her story and see her picture on ytnr.com under adopted Yorkies, she is the 3 Yorkie listed. Her name is Robin. My youngest yorkie I bought from a breeder in Michigan that was recomended to me . His name is Carson, he was the most expensive Yorkie I have bought ($1500) but his personality, size (5 lbs) and looks are priceless !!! My only advice to you and this is very important, is when you get your puppy make sure it is in the Spring or Summer. Yorkie's are one of the hardest breed of dogs to potty train (I'm sure alot of people will agree) and trying to housebreak a puppy in the middle of winter can be a nightmare. I live in Cincinnati. Good luck with your puppy hunt, you may also look at www.petfinder.com and put in Yorkie and Ohio , (probably Dayton, ohio as being the closest ) also don't under any circumstances buy a Yorkie from a pet store they are usually puppy mill Yorkies that are way over priced and frequently unhealthy shortly after buying them. Hi Janie! Thanks for your post, very informative.:) I looked Robin up on the website you gave, and she is absolutely gorgeous! Did you get her from Ohio? I noticed that there were no dogs from Ohio on the website. I'm guessing that it just means that there are no dogs available from Ohio at this time, am I right? I would not want to get one out of state and have to have the dog shipped. Too scary for the dog!:( Thanks again for your input!:) Steph |
Hi Steph The Yorkie's on the yTNR site that are pictured are currently being fostered by YTNR members. Some of the rescues we have never make the website because they are adopted so quickly by people that want to adopt a Yorkie. Most of our Yorkies are older (greater than 2 years) but that does make them bad dogs to adopt. Before I adopted Robin I was a yTNR member and had been signed up to be a foster Mom. 3 months after joining ytTNR. I was asked foster Robin for another YTNR member that wanted to go on vacation for 2 weeks and I was on the way she was going. Robin had been with them for 2 months and she was never put on the web site. After just a few days after fostering her I told my Husband that YTNR members have "fist bids" to adopt on of the foster's that have been placed in their home. After fostering her for 2 weeks my Husband and I adopted Robin. Now almost 3 years later we have never regreted our descision. On the ytnr website you can either sign up to become a Foster Mom (this may giive you a chance to see how your children do with a dog in the house and older Yorkie's may not be as fragile as a puppy.) You can also sign up to "adopt a Yorkie" and when one is available within your state you will get a phone call. You may choose to adopt the dog offered to you or not and still remain on the wait list. I am sorry for such a long post just trying to be helpful. Janie |
This is great. I was wondering how fostering worked. Do you still foster? What about all the doctor bills? If a dog is very sickly do you have to pay all the bills? Just wondering how that works.:) I was timid about fostering because I know that if an older Yorkie has not been around children they can get snappy. My children are good with animals, but I just want to be careful. Thanks for all your info. You've been great! Steph |
I kept trying to get a yorkie thru rescue, they do go toooo fast. I was approved & told it was the best ap they had seen in a long time, but the yorkies I was interested in had been adopted:( each time I would see another and email adopted adopted adopted. Fostering is your best bet to getting one. The adoption fee for the ones I was interestred in were $600 which was fine but they never had a match for me available. So I found a small hobby breeder & it was a 4 hr drive but worth it. The yorkie rescue that pulls out of Ohio I believe is in PA & its drivable, just because its out of state doesnt mean it has to fly, actuallly rescues wont fly, If they agrred to a out of state adoption, you would have to drive or fly there. I would have gone to china to get my girl:p All good advice from Janie . |
Since last January I have not taken on a foster. Mostly because with having now 6 Yorkies I feel like my attention to each one individually on a daily basis has been stretched to the limit and having the life style I a having now and working outside the home 3 days a week/12 hrs a day is enough for me. I mostly support yTNR with helping with referrals and talking to people like you. I also support them in a monitary way by particpating in their auctions and or fund raisors (which are infrequent) Starting a the end of this month I am taking my 1st of 4 cetification classes with a friend in healing touch for animals www.healingtouchforanimals.com I hope to be fully certified by this tme next year, having my own business and quiting my day job as a Nurse. When you get a foster you must take it to a vet to have it seen as a well dog, up to date with all the shots, get it microchipped and having it spayed or nuetered before you can inteview peolple to adopt the dog. Usually you pay up front for these vet bills then get reimbursed but there have been cases where ytnr will pay for part or some of the bill up front. On your application to adopt a Yorkie questions are asked of you such as the age and amount of children you have. We have nothing against potential adoptees having small children but we will not put a rescue that is not good with kids into a situation where it can be be a potential problem for the dog and/ or the family. Janie |
Janie, Wow! I just got off the HTA website. Very fascinating! I have always been interested in working with animals, but I never really felt as if I wanted to work at a vets office. I never wanted the animal to associate me with pain or uncomfort that comes from the visits to the vet. Does that make sense? I was very interested in what I saw on the website. You mentioned that after you get certified that you are looking to opening your own business. What exactly would your business be? Janie you are a wealth of information! Thanks!:) Steph |
People always ask me why I dont become a vet, I tell them that you see to many dogs that stupid owners need to turn over to rescue but wont etc & like you said its not a fun place for a animal. I mainly have done home visits for other rescues that had applications in my area which wasnt fun because you meet some really nice people but they had a small grandchildren that visited often & no fence so Denied. I would love to open a Doggie Boutique/daycare/groomer/cafe-where you can come for a coffee & cookie & your dog gets a dog biscuit & water in a teacup:D Also a private park for members w/dogs under 15lbs. But I dont think it would make enough money to run in my area:( So just a dream.... When you foster for a rescue they pick up the tab for everything, so you just worry about the the lovins & training:rolleyes: . They can damage your home, we have replaced carpet 3 times in 6 yrs, not just because of urine but actually destroyed:eek: . When you get your yorkie maybe we can have a girls day in chilli & take them shopping;) |
