Neutering Question!!! In light of Maximus "hump..hump..humping"...I was wondering how old did everybody get their yorkies neutered?..I was told by my vet 4-6 months but then in the breeders paperwok it says 7-8 months as optimal?...what do you guys think..Maximus is 19 weeks, hasn't lost ANY teeth, weighs 4.5lbs, hasn't begun lifting his legs (still squats) and hasn't begun marking. Is humping just the beginning..should I call the vet and schedule a neutuering appointment? or should I wait as planned till the end of August/Early September that way I can be with him for almost a week after it is done. I trust you guys VERY much and just wanted to know what your experience has been with this...Thanks again... |
"I'll Mark It, Again and Again, and Again" Listen to your vet. The earlier you get them neutered, the better. If you wait too long, the male dog doesn't realize that his "you know what" has been removed, and will still mark his territory. Believe me, I know. I adopted a one year old red heeler (Australian Cattle Dog), and had him fixed. To this day he still thinks, he is the main territory marker for the property. I asked the vet about it, and the above is what he told me. |

I have to wait for Tucker's testicle to drop (one has, but the othr has not). I would at least wait to see what happens with his teeth (I think around 6 months). You wouldn't want to put him under twice if you didn't have to. My vet said it was safe to wait up until a year. |
Zeus was neutered at 6 months. He has never humped anything or tried to mark anything. We got very lucky with him. He is still so sweet and innocent. He will be 2 tomorrow! :) |
Has Tucky started humping?...my Maximus is a early developer..lol |

All I ever heard from people was " dont get a male he'll mark FOREVER" so I was soooo afraid of that.. so Bailey had and appt to be fixed at 6 months... he marked (inside) 2x, both places the people had dogs... But since he has been fixed hasn't done it since... ( only outside) which is fine! I say the sooner the better. as for being with him after,, Bailey was FINE by the next morning. Get the laser done. Its easier on them. :) |

He is an occasional humper. He likes to have a casual hump every now and then, but he doesn't have a serious relationship with any of his stuffed animals. |
I called the vet...the office manager PAM...isn't in today I have to call back tommorrow and find out about scheduling and procedure etc...I also have to find out if they do the laser surgery..is it very common??? |

LASER??? never heard of that one... can u give more info on it? |
I understand it as... the same as they use on people , instead of a knife and and incision,,they use a laser and it is way less invasive and they need no stiches and do not have to go back for a follow up visit to check the incision, My vet said it was alot easier on the dog, and alot quicker with the healing. It cost about 30.00 more than the old version, which I could have done, It was up to me which I wanted for him.. But I did the laser, and he was his feisty , spunky self the next day! |
If I may ask how much did you pay?...because I was considering doing the friends of animals but if the laser surgery comes out to be $150-$200 (which I can probably squeeze up somewhere..AMEX????) I will just pay it and have it done that way...so that he will be more comfortable |

I also had him microchipped then, while he was out,, that was 35.00 here, I know that varies also. |
hmmm thanks very interesting Rhonda :) |
Brutus will be 6 months in two days and he's getting neutered July 6th. He's not humping or marking so I'm hoping he'll control himself until then! He still has a lot of baby teeth and today I noticed the bottom were a little loose but I don't know if the vet is going to pull them that day. It's expensive where I am to get him done. I believe it's costing me a little over $300! |
Brutus' Mom..check out the friends of animals website and put your zipcode..and see if your vet is affilated..then you can buy the certificate for $65.00 and get the spaying/neutering done by the vet you trust...if not OUCH!!!! $300.00 is alot of money |

Thanks mzkim....I guess I won't wait...my poor baby :( ... I am sad for him |
I just had Chewy at the vet and she told me it is adviseable to do it at 6 months and the only reason she would wait is to see if all his teeth come out. If not they will wait a little extra time because it's not good for too much anesthesia. Chhewy has humped a little, the other day I caught him with my son's monkey  LOL BTW, I hear the laser is good and I think I'm gonna do it. |
Yeah I want to find out about the laser...if my vet doesn't do it..I may just go somewhere else...that specializes in toy breeds and LASER...do you think that is wrong? |
I had my Maltese Codie neutered at 8 months of age. I wanted to have him done when he was 6 months old but my mother got VERY sick around that time and I had to take a leave of absence from work and take care of her. So unfortunately Codie's surgery got post-poned for a while. Codie does hump things and I believe it was because I waited until he was 8 months old. He humps his favorite stuffed animal which is a GIANT Pug. He has also occassionally humped my mother's (his grandmother) leg - it's hysterical!! ;) |
Oh no!!!...lol..he doesn't have any stuffed animals at home EXCEPT a giant care bear everything else is a plush toy or a squeaky toy, bones, rope toys etc...but one shot at the monkey/bear and he was giving it a NIGHT TO REMEMBER ...and me the reddest face ever..lol...after hearing everyones opinions I will not wait..I wills schedule tommorrow |

Interesting-- My breeder suggested 5 months, if the vet thought he was ready. She suggesting getting it taken care of well before any of the problems started. I do have a question though (at the risk of sounding stupid) if they get neutered will they still lift their leg to pee. Or will he continure to squat? |
