Flying with Yorkies - ONLY regarding HEALTH CERTIFICATES This thread is intended to ONLY give information on the regulations by the USDA regarding flying with pets. It is illegal to fly with your pets unless you have a current health certificate for your baby. I was given this information by my vet this morning when she learned that Cooper is flying tomorrow. If you are planning on flying with your pet - a call to the vet can get the form for you, usually without a charge. It is far better to be safe than sorry when arriving at the ticket counter in the event that the ticket agent asks for the certificate. The health certificate generally is only good for a period of 10 days. My vet said that Louisiana's certificates are good for 30 days but other states may not recognize the validity passed 10 days. This thread is not intended to discuss any other aspects of flying . . . not the dimensions of pet carriers, not the transportation of service dogs or any other subject. Please let's stay on topic. |
My vet's computer generates receipts with the services printed on, so this serves as proof and a record of vaccines which I know are necessary to fly. Is a health certificate something different? I'm flying with Chewy in 2 months and I need to start getting some info straight! |
She said at the very least to be sure to be able to produce vaccination records and your information for the rabies vaccine. The Official Health Certificate I was given is on NCR paper and it is a form from the LA Dept of Agriculture and Forestry with a specific certificate number on it. It includes the dates of the vaccines for distemper, hepatitis and rabies. It has a place for other vaccinations to be listed. |
That is very valuable information. I would think that anytime you are traveling period, by whatever means--to take your baby's records with you. You never know when they will come in handy. |

From my understanding, the Health certificate is different than a vaccination certification. When Bentley flew with us at Christmas he had to go in and get checked by the vet and then we received the health certificate stating that he was fit to fly. |

the price I don't know about other locations, but I have just been informed that the health certificates here in CA (at least at my vet's office) have gone up to $35.00. I have no clue why. I haven't go in just yet. I go in on Thursday. I will find out if this is national, regional, or whatever. fly safe everyone! |
While it might not truly be ILLEGAL to fly without a health certificate as my vet stated or as I understood her statement, the airlines are within their right to require one. Thus my statement . . . better safe than sorry when arriving at the ticket counter. Better to be prepared than for your pet to be unable to accompany you. |

The USDA nor any federal governmental agency requires a health certificate for your pet to fly, but individual airlines MAY require one so, it is always best to have one. If you are concerned about the cost, before you pay your vet for an unnecessary health certificate, check with the airline you and your pet are flying on to see if it is required. I would hope that most vets are like Carter's Moms and wouldn't charge for the health certificate, but some are not as generous, unfortunately. |
This may be a silly question...but if they are only good for 10 days in some areas...what happens when you take a 12 day vacation with your pet? Do you run the risk of having trouble on the return flight? |
