I almost killed my own baby tonight
 

I am so upset right now. I ordered samples of Lifes abundance the other day, and it came today. I gave Sawyer some of it, and he loved it, so I was really pleased. They also sent me a dog treat shaped like a heart. Sawyer wanted it so badly, and I knew it was made of really good ingredients. I tried to break it up, but it was so hard, I couldn't break it at all. Sawyer kept barking for it, so I gave it to him. My husband and I have watched him through it all over the place tonight like it was a good smelling, but too hard to chew toy. I was just writing on the computer, and Sawyer began to choke. Cliff and I both ran to him, and he had gotten a piece of that darn cookie off and it was choking him. Cliff grabbed him up and hit him on the back, but nothing came up. He seemed to be able to breath, but he kept trying to get it up. We gave him a piece of bread with peanut butter, and it took the cookie down with it. I am so sorry, where was my mind!! That treat was so big, and so hard I never gave him choking on it a thought. That is a mistake I will never make again. Please be careful with treats that are too big for our babies, even a small piece of something so hard can choke them:mad: :mad:

Glad it turned out ok. I had a scare the other day with Cali. I gave them carrots for the 2nd time and she started choking on a piece. I freaked and didn't know what to do but she finally coughed it up.

i can imagine how that upset you... we try to do what's best but we are human too.... glad the little sweety is ok....

Another thought: we took a pet first aid course from the Red Cross. It was very well done and thought provoking in safety proofing from a puppy's viewpoint.

That's scarry! I'm glad he is OK now. You need to give him Yorkie Yummies. They are a better size!

Sorry about the choking and SOOOOOO glad your baby is ok- it can be so heart stopping scarey when somethong like this happens -
what I also want to know is what you think of the Lifes Abundance ? I am just getting ready to mix it with what i have been feeding and try to get my kids to all eat it - they are all good eaters but i have tried so many supposed to be great foods and they walk away from it untill i give in and go back to the old food - I am so determined to make them eat good without having to cook for all mine - they liked the sample but we will see how this goes - just wanted to know how others are doing with it - they better like it - I just signed up to be a rep and ordered 80 lbs of it :D :D :D

I am so glad what u tried worked. I know with our little ones I almost have heart failure when something is wrong with them.

I am so glad Sawyer is okay. That is the scariest thing. Recently Sugar choked on a piece of Heartguard so I know just how you feel. He was foaming at the mouth and making awful squeaky choking sounds. It scared me so bad that I haven't let him have anything besides a Cheerio for a treat since then and I cut his Heartguard into 16 pieces.

Things like this are so scary, I know from experience and it made me feel like the most horrible person and mom ever. One night I had given Lilly a treat for peeing on her potty pad and I had noticed she would chew them sometimes but sometimes she wouldn't which isn't good to begin with. As I gave her the treat I told my boyfriend "we have to get some other treats that are softer because I feel like she struggles with these where she isn't trained to be calm before she gets one" and as soon as I said that she started choking and not much longer after that she started foaming out the nose and the mouth uncontrollably. My boyfriend was already in the kitchen with me and we were both crying not knowing what to do. We were hoping she'd just gag it back up but I was absolutely horrified so I went and sat in the bathroom almost sick to my stomach. The next thing I know I'm asking him if she's okay and he told me she wasn't breathing so he blew in her nose and got her back to breathing. I called the emergency vet as soon as I could and we took her in. As soon as we got to the vet she was acting fine, just really worn out because I guess it had taken a lot out of her and she was kinda shaky. He still checked her out and he could feel it in her stomach and said she'd probably be sick to her stomach while passing it but told us to get some Pepto to settle it. Needless to say, the next day she was up jumping around back to her old self and I never really noticed any straining or unusual stomach problems/pooing. After I got home, the treats went straight into the trash. Scariest time ever I swear :( !

I am so sorry your baby choked on the little wholesome heart. The babies really do need to be supervised any time they eat something. Although we free feed the LA kibbles. They are tiny so i never worry about them getting choked on those, the treats are larger and i usually break them in two. The little hearts are very healthy and as you can see from other posts, our babies can get choked on a lot of different things so please be careful when you give your babies something new to eat. You did the right thing to stop the choking by whatever means. I remember the greenies got a bad rap once when a dog choked on one of those. My girls love them but i never let them eat one without me being with them.
I hope Sawyer is ok and you will give the LA food another chance as it is soooooooooo healthy and good for them!!:thumbup:

Oh, poor little baby, I'm glad he's okay! Those wholesome hearts are the 'hardest' of the 3 treats so I always cut them in half and watch the babies while they eat them. The dental treats are soft, you may want to try those instead.

So glad Sawyer is OK..that had to be very scary for you and your husband and of course Sawyer too!! Thanks for the warning!

Roufi chocked on a jerky strip. It was flat and about 3/4 inch wide by 1 1//4 long and very thin. I saw her pawing at her mouth and I thought she may have had a loose tooth. Then she started gaging and I had to put my finger in her mouth and down her throat. Luckily I was able to get behind it with my nail and pull it out. I cut all the strips in half the long way to prevent this from happening again.

You will love the food. The idea of healthy food is so very important. The choking was my fault. That treat was too hard and too big for him. I am going to keep him on the food, just a different treat that they offer.

How scary for Sawyer and you's. :( I am glad that he is ok though. I also feed Lifes Abundance and here's a soft treat they sell that my two just love. It's called Gourmet Dental Treats, Honey Peanut Butter Snacks for Dogs. They are like really soft small cookies. :)
