Is he big for his age?

Hi everyone - I am curious to know whether or not my little Deegan is big for his age or what. I brought him home last weekend, and took him to the vet that Monday. He was 9 weeks old exactly and the vet's office weighed him at 2.5 lbs. There are about 2 other people at my work who have yorkies, and they cringe and tell me that he's a porker when I tell them how much he weighs.
He is my first yorkie, so i don't know what to think. The breeders that I bought him off of said that he would probably be about 5-6 lbs, while my vet told me maybe even 8 or 9lbs. I hope that he stays about he 5-6lbs, but I will love him regardless. It's just been bothering me not knowing what to expect. Do you think that he's going to be a large yorkie?

red98vett 06-25-2005 03:40 PM

Don't let anyone get you upset over his weight - as long as he's healthy you're going to have lots of fun with him...He sounds fine to me !

Passionfruition 06-25-2005 03:41 PM

I think it depends on what you consider "large"

Sully is 9 pounds now, fully grown. (almost 11 months old)

When he was 10 weeks old, he weighed 3.2 pounds. (This is the day after we adopted him. :))

Hope that helps! We couldn't love the little guy any more no matter what he weighed though. He's got the best little personality of any dog I've ever met!

chachi 06-25-2005 03:41 PM

I could be wrong but it sounds like hes gonna be on the larger side. Just to give you some idea My male was 1 lb at 6 weeks and he is now 6lbs. You will just have more yorkie to love.

txshopper73 06-25-2005 03:41 PM

you're best best will be to take his weight at 12 weeks and double it. That will give you an estimate as to his adult size. Yorkies go through a growth spurt between 8-12 weeks and it's possible that this is all it is.

HeatherHamptons 06-25-2005 03:44 PM

you wanna hear big? Angel's pups at 6 weeks weighed 2 pounds 8 oz, 2 pounds 7 ounces and 2 pounds 2 ounces.

By the time they are 9 weeks they will probably be like 4 pounds lol

Meg 06-25-2005 03:46 PM

He may be a little bigger then the teeny tiny yorkies. But he isn't huge by any means. Keeley was 3 pounds at 10 weeks. The vet said he'd be about 7ish (I am guessing 8). But even 8 pounders are still small dogs! :D

Don't worry too much, I felt exactly as you described when I found out how much Keeley really weighed. I felt a little decieved by the breeder, but now (3 1/2 weeks later) I feel so much better and really don't mind that Keeley may end up to be a little bigger then I thought at first.

There are SO many cute Yorkies here that weigh around and more then 8 pounds and seeing all their cute pictures really helped me see that they are cute (and small) no matter how much they weigh!

Hope that helps.

That is pretty much what Keeley weighed at 10 weeks. It'll be interesting to see if he and Sully end up about the same size. I am glad you posted that, I have been wanting to see a dog that weighed the same as Keeley and is full grown know. Sully seems like a great size. I think Keeley will be perfect for when we decide to have kids. He won't "break as easy" ;)

Oh Sully is wonderful! In fact, if ever I comment about him being a "big" yorkie.....people at work laugh so hard at me for calling my tiny dog "big"! Haha!

I have compared him to other yorkies that we met at a dog festival two weeks ago and I noticed that he's the same size around as 6-7lb yorkies but Sully is like 4 inches longer. He fits fine into size Small dog clothes...but his shirts just look short on him b/c he's got such a long torso.

My husband has a "soul patch" (a patch of hair right under his bottom lip above his chin) - and Sully has a white patch of hair in the "same spot" on him and we tell him that he takes after his daddy!

And I have to special order swimsuits because I have such a long torso'd body.........its so funny how "our baby" "takes after" me too, his adopted mommy. A funny set of coincidences! Scary, isn't it? LOL!!!!!

We say it was just meant to be :p

Missy's Mommy 06-25-2005 04:05 PM

Missy was 2lbs at 8weeks and is almost 5lbs at 11 & 1/2 mo old.

StewiesMom 06-25-2005 04:12 PM

Stewie was about 3lbs at 16 weeks and is now 6.5lbs at 8 mos

LIL MIS' MAGIC 06-25-2005 04:33 PM

I would tell you to be happy to have a bigger yorkie...all the tiny ones have such health issues that is incredible and we know from experience...Magic is just over 4lbs and she had been sick numberous of times, while Sailor is well over 5 lbs and has never been sick...the more they weigh the better off they will be!!!

Olivier 06-25-2005 04:45 PM

From time to time vets are zealous about the weight of a pup . Mine told me that Gioia was going to be 7 to 8 pounds as an adult , she only went to 3 pounds 4 ounces .

luzangela428 06-25-2005 05:22 PM

Maximus weighed 2.1 at 10 weeks...he is now 4.5 at 18 weeks

babi1542 06-25-2005 05:27 PM

Pebbles was 2 1/2 lbs at 8 wks and now is 6 lbs at 5 months and one wk

Bella0722 06-25-2005 05:39 PM

General Patton is going to be big I am afraid to say. He will be 11 weeks tomorrow. I weighed him several days ago and the scale read four lbs. I am hoping it was wrong. He was the only male and the largest in a litter of three pups. The breeder said on the conservative side he should be 6 lbs. But if I double his weight at this point would mean he'd be eight lbs fully grown. He eats v.well and seems well adjusted to his new home and loves to play with Bella.

babi1542 06-25-2005 05:44 PM

I have seen the chart that you use but I do not understand it. Pebbles is 6 lbs right now at five months and 6 days, how much will she weigh fully grown? Also, when is she considered fully grown, I have been given different times? thanks

Passionfruition 06-25-2005 05:52 PM

I've been told to expect yorkies to be fully grown at 6 months and to go ahead and switch their food to adult food then, actually. I read it on this forum, there's a thread about it and that's what made me realize that I needed to switch Sully to adult food b/c there's too much unneeded fat content in puppy food once your dog is full grown.

Here's a thread about that: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=4054

Mya's_Mom 06-25-2005 06:20 PM

When I was at the vet Mya had on a rhinestone collar with 2 tags and a harness
When he went to weigh her I was already subtracting like I do for myself....the clothes, the change in the pocket....hahahaha
Anyway she was 2lbs at 9 weeks and now....Naked....at 4 months she is 3lbs 6oz.
She gained a whole pound in like 3 weeks...I was thinking she was going to be like my 25 Lb "teacup" Pom. As long as she can fit under an airplane seat I will be happy.
The woman I bought her off of said she would be under five pounds. I found her breeder and he told me most likely she will be 6 pounds. When I think back to when I lugged my kids arounds that is not bad at all !

NCyorkie 06-25-2005 06:23 PM

yes, it's a great post, I just read about it...here's a comparison for you. I got Romeo at 15 weeks and he weighed 3.2 lbs. Now, at 6 months and a few days he weighs 3.4 lbs. Both his parents are 5 lbs.

Stitches29 06-25-2005 06:27 PM

Maybe he could date Maggie the "Mag-Wad". She weighed that much at 9 weeks too. Now she is 4 months old and 4.3 lbs. I prefer to have a baby with some meat on their bones. They don't seem quite as fragile. That is only my opinion. Other like the very tiny ones. It really doesn't matter, because you fell in love the day you saw him.

chachi 06-25-2005 06:35 PM

Wow this has been interesting just reading about the differences in growth in different dogs.

chewysmom 06-25-2005 06:44 PM

I got Chewy on May 3rd and he was 11 weeks and 1lb, 6 oz. He is now nearly 19 weeks and 2lb 7oz. It is predicted he will be between 3-4lbs once fully grown.

Nomiland 06-25-2005 08:21 PM

My baby was 2.75 pounds at 9 weeks and is 3.2 pounds at 11 weeks. I think that she is on the same track as Deegan's puppy. both of her parents were in the 6 pounds range so we were expecting her to be 6 or 7 pounds.

AJ12 06-25-2005 08:37 PM

My breeder lied to my boyfriend who purchased Bailey for me as a wonderful gift. he told my boyfriend he was 9 wks and compared him to some other "9 week old" puppies and he was much smaller. it turned out he was really 7 weeks old and 2 lbs.
At 9 weeks old he grew to 2.12 and now at 10 weeks he is 3.1. its like they grow before our eyes!
i think mine will be about 8 or 9lbs. he is pretty thick. but like everyone said. more yorkie to love!

my cousin has a 10 pounder who was 13 lbs. he is still perfect for carrying and having on your lap. he is also the best well mannered dog i have ever met. (besides mine of course :) )

Well today we had our visit to the vet for vacs and a yearly and I was shocked when they weighted my baby princess she will be 13weeks on monday and today she weighted omg are you ready for this 5lbs. I could not believe it and my breeder said she was to be 6lb or less ya right but as long as she is a healthy girl also when I took her about a few weeks ago to get her boosters she was 10weeks and she weighted in at3.8lbs that means she has gained well over a pound since then so what kind a weight should i expect? I mean my brownie is 2 years old and she is muttalove she only weighed 10lbs today... so should I expect my princess to be just as big.. she dont look like she is 5 lbs but my god I was shocked just cause of the diff in just a few weeks. I dont mind her being a big girl just cause I do have a 6 year old son who loves to play and she is very playful and healthy I guess thats all that matters but I did kinda want my little one to stay little for a little while they are just like kids change so fast.. Also her hair has gotten so much lighter its like a silver on her head not black.. so I guess I will just have a lota yorkie to love... :D
these pict were taken last night.6/24

seh0422 06-25-2005 09:49 PM

oh I forgot Princess's parents were both under 6lbs.

Deegan's mom 06-26-2005 05:49 AM

Yes, you are right. His health and happiness mean the world to me.

Hi everyone, I just recently got my dog. She is 15weeks old and ways 1lb 8 ounces. I was told she wont be more than 4lbs, which I hope is true. But I am unsure. I took her to the vet and she is a healthy little pup and I LOVE HER. What does everyone think. According to what others growing was it doesnt seem she will be big, but I am kind of worried.

Don't worry , she'll not be on the bigger side . Probably she'll be 3 or 4 pounds .
I have had 2 pounds puppies at 15 weeks old and now they are 4 pounds .
