So I called the vet. Ugh.. why are front desk people so rude? They always think YOU are supposed to know everything about THEIR job. :rolleyes: But anyway..

They are the same vets that spayed Brooklyn. And I was pretty comfortable with the whole process.

They said they don't normally do blood work unless the animal is over 6 or sick. The front desk lady acted like I was insane for asking. Should I still get it?

They told me she has to be current on shots. Which she isn't in their eyes because I've started only getting them every three years so I'm not sure what to do...

I now how you feel. With Cali she had been so sick when she was youger that I put off spaying her, Then she went into heat, and during heat she had a possible intestinal blockage. So the er vet said I can do the exploratory while she is in heat with no greater risk and do her liver biopsy at the same time. This was 6 at night and I said ok and they called me a couple hours later and she was fine. Your baby will be fine. Just get the pre surgery bloodwork done.

Hmmm...I don't know if my vet is overly cautious, but she ALWAYS recommends pre-surgery blood work for every dog, but especially for small breeds. Also, she even wanted bile acid tests before Kiwi was spayed and she didn't have any symptoms. It was a good thing, too, because Kiwi did have liver problems and if she had had a shunt, the anesthesia could really make her sick, or she could have died. I wonder if the front desk person you spoke to didn't really know what was going on? I would make an appointment to see the vet and talk about all this stuff before giving the okay to spay.

Regarding the vaccines, you could always ask for a titer to avoid giving more vaccines than necessary. Something you could discuss with your vet. I hope you have a good relationship with your vet and are comfortable asking a lot of questions! Good luck!

I would say you have to trust your vet 100%. If I would ever do it again I would find a vet that specializes in small breeds. I was worried sick when Gracie and Hallee got spayed. So glad it all came out okay.

It all freaks me out also. I never had my big girls spayed and my lab became very ill. She ended up having emergency surgery and it was $1,000. She was 8 and came down with an infection. Needless to say my golden retriever is going to get done. It is not worth them getting so sick. We could have lost our lab. I am terrified to take Winstin in but I know for health reasons it will be best for him.

My vet just about requires blood work. I would get it done. It could save some headaches.

Yeah, I think I'm going to make them do. You would think they would want to do it. More stuff= more money. :p

I am so picky that I have a hard time trying any vet I have had 100%. :p :rolleyes:

Any suggestions on finding a vet that specializes in small breeds?

I hear ya...Mine aren't spayed or neutered...I am too afraid to do it..

I would definately do the bloodwork. Our vet requires it after age six but recommends it before then. I would also talk to them about doing titers insteads of vaccines.

Each of our girls were spayed at about 5 1/2 months. Our vet insists on having them brought in first thing in the morning, does the surgery early in the day, and keeps them overnight before releasing them the next morning. I visited each of them a couple of hours after the surgery, and they were just fine. By the time I picked them up the next morning, the biggest problem was keeping them from doing too much jumping and playing for a few days. Must not have been a traumatic experience, because they love the vet.

My fears were overcome by the statistics - chances of adult health problems are reduced about 80% by having the little girls spayed before they come into heat the first time.

I share your concern...i'm too petrified to get Pixie spayed...she's 4 months and a little over 1lb 8oz...i'm not sure if she will even reach 3lbs as an adult :confused: I don't think i could take any unecessary risks with her...i would prefer her to be spayed of course.

Right there with you Kezza. Our little ones are close in weight. Mine is almost 5 months and 28 oz. (she'de weight waaaay less but she's a chow hound !! lol ) I know I have to get it done for her health but man, it's scary. I know I will be a wreck when the time comes.

I know the thought of surgery is scary, but just remember that by spaying your female dog early, you can all but eliminate the chance of her getting mammary cancer later on.

In those females spayed prior to their first heat cycle, breast cancer is very, very rare. The risk of malignant mammary tumors in dogs spayed prior to their first heat is 0.05%. It is 8% for dog spayed after one heat, and 26% in dogs spayed after their second heat.
