I think its definitely all about temperment and who was there first. Yesterday I took Georgia, my new yorkie who is 3lbs, to visit my sister and her dog a labrador retreiver who outways her buy about 60 lbs. And after 15 min of curiousity her could care less she was there.

Now my rottie, who just passed away, she would not have had any other dog in the house period. and she was a teddy bear but she was spoiled rotten and very attached to me.

I think as long as the yorkie was the first dog and has established her rank. Bringin in a puppy, the puppy will learn its place too.

I have a Yorkie and a golden retriever, the retriever ADORES the Yorkie! They are in sepreable!

How about a Maltese? They are quieter and more laid back than Yorkies and would be a great companion for your little girl. Maltese are definitely couch potatoes!

Next time around, I want to get two. Another Maltese, of course, and a Yorkie. I know so many people with both and they make great companions. That why I joined YT, to learn as much as I can about Yorkies!

Hey Boggie. My hubby is a retired NY Police Officer and wasn't all to please with having to walk Yorkies. Ha ha. Ten years later after getting our first Yorkie we now have five and guess where they all sit at night. On the big bad NYC Police Officer's Lap. I'd go for another Yorkie. A bigger dog may hurt your little one - unintentionally of course. Best of luck to you. Elaine.

I certainly have fell fully for our little girl (like i just knew i WOULDN'T), but she's definitely mom's girl. So now, i need one for me, heh

I had my little Mia in college with me and my roommate wanted to get a bigger dog and it TERRIFIED me, I was so afraid about leaving them alone and that the bigger dog would hurt Mia by accident. Yorkies are so friendly and don't always know the strength of bigger dogs. I took Mia with us to the adoption places and we found this golden retriever mix that was so calm and chill and didn't pay a bit of attention to Mia, and it worked out perfectly. Mia would jump all over him and he didn't care. I would probably recommend getting an older dog rather than a puppy, as bigger breed puppies are SO playful and don't know their own strength at all. JMO

I think it would be ok to get a big dog, just make sure not to ever leave them unsupervised together. I also think that an older calmer dog may be a better choice as a big puppy could get too rough with the yorkie.
