Best Companion for tiny yorkie Hey guys, It's been a while since I've posted, but just wanted to get some input. We feel that our little baby (Icee) needs a friend. She is very small, about 1.7 lbs at 2 years old. I really want to get her a friend. The breeder we got her from also breed Great danes....haha Just wanted to see what you guys recommended. Cheers! |
Personally, I think another Yorkie of course, but maybe a small Chihuahua or Pomeranian or maybe a Maltese... |
Ok, I guess i should clarify. Our little yorkie is my wife's dog. Soooooo, i need a dog too, ya see. I would like it to be a "bigger" dog. Call it a pride thing or a "man" thing. haha |
lol....maybe a bigger Yorkie :p |
Seriously, I have two Yorkies and Hubby has a Rottweiler. They all get along just fine.... Is that what you were wondering? |
Yep, that's it. I have always wanted a great dane. When I worked at the fire department, we had one there about 3 days a week, it was great. I've been doing some research, so we'll see. |
It's very good that you're doing lots of research to learn the personalities and temperaments of each breed because if you're getting a large dog to go along with a 1.7lb yorkie, then you have to make sure they're not going to hurt the yorkie by accident from being playful. It might be better for you to get an adult larger dog who has already gone through the puppy stage, so the yorkie doesn't get hurt. I know many people on here have large breed dogs (including boxers and rottweilers) with their yorkies and they all get along :) Good luck!! |
I think another member on here has a Great Dane with a yorkie. I know a lot of members do have big dogs with their yorkies. I think the key is supervision until you see how they get along. As a pup the Great Dane would want to play with your Yorkie, and it''s a matter of seeing if he realizes his size or not. |
one nice thing about our yorkie is she can out run the big dog puppies, and weave in and out of things to get away lol |
How about a Rottweiler? I love that breed |
I have 2 full grown lab's (not close to as big as a Dane LOL) each about 60-65lbs and my Yorkie who is still a pup is just 2lbs now. My husband also got a new pup at the same time, same reasons the Yorkie is just to girlie for him. So we have a 17wk old Boston terrier who is just awesome and very manly. :p I'm assuming you have always wanted a Dane and thats why you are choosing that breed so as long as you do your research and if you do get it as a puppy make sure that you are very careful with the 2 of them together so that the Yorkie doesn't get hurt which could happen easily with as small as she is I would go for it. My 10month old lab and our little dogs play together very well, she is still a puppy herself but seems to "know" that Bella is tiny and is very very gentle with her. |
I would be afraid to have a large dog with a Yorkie that small. The bigger dog could hurt it so easily, even unintentionally. |

No matter how sweet the big dog is, I'd still worry about him hurting such a tiny Yorkie. I have heard too many stories over the years of small dogs being accidently injured by a larger companion. That's why I love the idea of a small, but "manly" dog like a Boston terrier. Pugs are wonderful little dogs, too, and kind of "tough" looking. A neighbor has a Min Pin and he looks just like a miniature Doberman. |
If you really want a great dane, I think you should take the yorkie to the breeder with you and see how the puppies all react to her, to see which one you think would be best. |
1 Attachment(s) Thought you guys might want to see an updated picture of her, so here ya go. On the companion subject: Great dane might not be a good pick for our situation. I just like them for their laziness. We are always lying around the house, and danes are very much loungers. I would consider another yorkie but we have the perfect dog right now, and I don't wanna get another one and expect the same thing. Icee doesn't hardly ever bark, she potties in her litter box 98% of the time. She's the biggest snuggler and doesn't have any of the bad characteristics that are usually associated with yorkies. Her only problem is that she's been spoiled badly, which is ok. So we'll see what happens |
Former Rottie Owner I think its definitely all about temperment and who was there first. Yesterday I took Georgia, my new yorkie who is 3lbs, to visit my sister and her dog a labrador retreiver who outways her buy about 60 lbs. And after 15 min of curiousity her could care less she was there. Now my rottie, who just passed away, she would not have had any other dog in the house period. and she was a teddy bear but she was spoiled rotten and very attached to me. I think as long as the yorkie was the first dog and has established her rank. Bringin in a puppy, the puppy will learn its place too. |
I have a Yorkie and a golden retriever, the retriever ADORES the Yorkie! They are in sepreable! |
How about a Maltese? They are quieter and more laid back than Yorkies and would be a great companion for your little girl. Maltese are definitely couch potatoes! Next time around, I want to get two. Another Maltese, of course, and a Yorkie. I know so many people with both and they make great companions. That why I joined YT, to learn as much as I can about Yorkies! |
Hey Boggie. Hey Boggie. My hubby is a retired NY Police Officer and wasn't all to please with having to walk Yorkies. Ha ha. Ten years later after getting our first Yorkie we now have five and guess where they all sit at night. On the big bad NYC Police Officer's Lap. I'd go for another Yorkie. A bigger dog may hurt your little one - unintentionally of course. Best of luck to you. Elaine. |
Haha, I certainly have fell fully for our little girl (like i just knew i WOULDN'T), but she's definitely mom's girl. So now, i need one for me, heh |
Boxers 4 Attachment(s) Boxers and Yorkies are a good mix. Here are a few pics: |
I had my little Mia in college with me and my roommate wanted to get a bigger dog and it TERRIFIED me, I was so afraid about leaving them alone and that the bigger dog would hurt Mia by accident. Yorkies are so friendly and don't always know the strength of bigger dogs. I took Mia with us to the adoption places and we found this golden retriever mix that was so calm and chill and didn't pay a bit of attention to Mia, and it worked out perfectly. Mia would jump all over him and he didn't care. I would probably recommend getting an older dog rather than a puppy, as bigger breed puppies are SO playful and don't know their own strength at all. I think it would be ok to get a big dog, just make sure not to ever leave them unsupervised together. I also think that an older calmer dog may be a better choice as a big puppy could get too rough with the yorkie. |
