Does anybody else dislike the "puppy cut"?? I think a lot of the beauty of the breed is in the hair, and how long and flowy it can be. Even with a cottony coat, I think they look great a bit more fluffy...I can understand the logic of doing it in the summer if the dog is outside all the time, but for those that don't have them outside all that often, I can't ever understand getting one. I just hate the short cut. Maybe "hate" is a strong word. Let's go with dislike. I just think it's determental to the look of the dog. |
I agree that it is the beauty of the breed, the hair. I keep mine long, i never cut them except Teddy cause he had tons of knots i couldn't take out but it is growing out beautifully |
Princess has the puppy cut... I think it looks good both ways |
hehehe. I don't like puppy cut either but Momiji has puppy cut... The reason is to keep her clean and easier to groom each day. She gets poop on her butt hair a lot so I keep shampooing her butt every other day or so and I know it isn't good or she doesn't like it. So I keep her hair short. But I kept the topknot!!! And it is easier to put close off if her hair is shorter!!! |
I think all cuts look good on a yorkie. After all there are no ugly yorkies!!! :D :D :D :D :D |
i think it looks cute Brownie has had it a few times i think thats ones of the great things about yorkies you cant have fun with there hair if not showing & they look cute in every cut & most people with a cottony coated yorkie cant keep it long cause its not just fluffy its matts tangle & knots some people love the temperment of a yorkie but do not have the time to keep up with a long coat it does take alot of time & money |
Bailey's ears MY YORKIE IS 8 MONTHS OLD AND HIS EARS DON'T STAND. Is there something I can do to make them stand? |
the long hair is not practical for a lot of people. i feel a bit defensive about your wording on the puppy cut... i think all the dogs on here look great no matter how their hair is.... while having layla's hair long is not practical for us and it isn't my favorite look i think by saying hate you kinda put down people who's dog have the puppy cut. just my opinion |
i personally love the puppy cut, and find it very practical. I keep the face and head long, and the tail, and I think my babies look very cute! |
coat All Yorkies should be so lucky to have owners who devote a few minutes of daily care to their coats, teeth, ears etc...but unfortunately many are a mess of knots, mats, teeth never brush, dirty ears, long nails...so groomers like me and my kind have to sort it all out and put the Yorkie in a clip that is benefical to their well being...something the owner can maintain, especially those with more then one. The soft coat needs so much daily care to prevent tangles, I do not blame anyone for wantign a short clip... Plus, many like to dress their pets and long coats make it hard. |
I keep both of my girls in the puppy cut because they both wear clothes a lot. I think the puppy cut is "cute" while the standard long hair is "elegant" so it just depends on how you want them to look! |
Detramental? That's kinda a harsh way to put it... Teddy's hair is long and considering he is a boy and hubby and my son take out anything I put in his hair the minute they see it poor Teddy can't see! LOL Tonight is bath night and I was considering cutting it. I think Yorkies are perfectly adorable in full coat and with a nice puppy cut. I especially think it suits the boys. So when we finally are able to have our little girl she will have long beautiful hair and Teddy will sport that manly puppy cut for us! Did I forget to say that I think thier comfort is first and formost? Kim |
Oh absolutely not! Not here anyway :p I love both long and shorter. However, I actually DON'T prefer the super duper LONG "show dog" hair on a Yorkie (well unless he/she is in the show ring of course, lol). Hmmm, let me rephrase that. I don't mind it on the body so much - but for some reason I don't like the face hair to be super duper long. Reminds me of a lion somehow, lol. My little girl's body hair will be longer, but the hair on her face/head I will always keep in a medium length (which some MIGHT even consider to be a little on the shorter side - she is in my avatar, and that is how the hair on her head/face will most likely always be). My little boy's body hair was longer a few months ago, but I cut it short and LOVE it on him. His face I keep shorter also (not super duper short - but short enough :p). Also though, I think....it just depends on the Yorkie itself. Mind you, all Yorkies look different, and I have seen some that I actually prefer with their coats a little longer, others I think look much better with a shorter cut. I think alot of it (well at least with me personally anyway) has to do with the Yorkies nose/snout. If a Yorkie has one of the longer noses/snouts - I think the super short hair on the face only makes it look bigger/longer. Truthfully, for me - it just all depends on each individual Yorkie ;) But honestly, for the owner himself it's all just a matter of personal preference, and whether or not you have time to groom and maintain a longer coat. |
I like both..but what I like about the puppycut is when he gets it he looks like a PUPPY again. :D |
I for one am all for the puppy cut. I just think it's determental to the look of Sam if he had the long coat :p Good Golly as much as he runs and rolls, he would be one big knot. |
Detrimental? |

word If you use the word "detrimental" in correct terms..meaning damage or harm to the "coat", then I agree, it does damage or harm the long coat to cut off..common sense, the long hair is GONE..but it does not damage or harm the dog itself. |
I love the puppy cut especially on the boys. Penny got it for her first cut, but now I'm letting her hair grow. We'll see how long that works. LOL |

I very much perfer the long coat on yorkies too. Lacy's hair grows so incredibly slow..I never cut it, but at three years old it's not even what I would consider medium length yet...it frustrates me. I just started giving her fish oil so I'm hoping just maybe it'll start growing faster.. I will continue to keep letting it grow though because I want it to get long. I will always keep my yorkies' hair long. I just LOVE the full coated look. I worked at a dog boutique/grooming salon until I started vet school, and we had a few dogs that would come in with long hair and get it all cut off. It made me so sad... The only yorkie that I've prefered the puppy cut look on is my best friend's yorkie because he has super wavy, almost curly hair and it just poofs when it gets long and it makes him look very unkept...so short hair looks so much better on him. But on yorkies that have straight hair, the long coat looks better to me. It's just so gorgeous! |
I like the long hair, but my girls and one of my boys have the cotton coat that gets matted so easy, so for me having the puppy cut keeps them nice and clean looking and they like it , I think:rolleyes: karleighs coat is somewhat on the curley side so she really looks messy when its longer, I personally love them in all shapes , sizes, coats and colors;) |
agrre and disagree 2 Attachment(s) I love love love the long Yorkie coats. Both my Yorkies had very long coats and they looked beautiful in them, No tangles or any thing. The only problem I had was the male peeing down his leg and My females hair was so long it seemed to weigh her head down at times and not to mention it always layed in her food and water dishs while she ate. She also would rub her head so much at night I thought it must get so sore from being up every day. So those are the reasons I cut my babys hair and them seem to be much happyer with the short hair. and I see so many babys with short hair and I think they look adorable. So I agree and disagree. I guess I love it both ways. Heres a picture with my two with long hair and one with it very short. |
I am all about the puppy cut for Chip, he is a typical rambunctious boy. He runs into woodsy brambles, and wrestles with other dogs so long hair would not be practical for me. Although I do like to have some feathering on his tail, but he really hates it being brushed so I can only imagine how he would be if his whole body was long. Having long hair doesn't neccessarily mean you are more devoted to your dog, its just a personal preference. |
We keep our guys in puppy cuts and we think they are absolutely adorable. They too, run under the bushes, wrestle, roll and tumble. I can't imagine what they would look like with long hair. Right now the trees in our back yard are shedding their leaves - they bring in enough leaves now with puppy cuts. I can't imagine what a long coat would look like full of leaves!!! :D Don't get me wrong, I think a Yorkie in a full coat is beautiful - but it just isn't practical for us. |
I think you're going to get lots of responses favoring both cuts!! I love the puppy cut because you can see their cute little body shapes and I love the long hair, well, because they look beautiful that way too!!! I too think, just like with us "humanoids" the face hair and its cut and how well it looks, depends on the shape of the Yorkie head, and snout. But in the end, it is all about what works for you. Unless you knick them with the scissors (doh) I don't think a short cut would be detrimental LOL. |
I LOVE the look of the full coat, but we just can't have it. Both of my girls sport the puppy cut year round. It's hot here in Florida and they HATE being brushed, so the puppy cut is the only way to keep them and me happy. I think you're trying to start something here, and if that's the case, Heaven help you. |
I love the puppy cut. I do like the show cut but it is usually not my preference. Ellie has a mixture of cottony and silky hair. It is wavy and doesn't part down the middle. I brush her less than three times a year (yes a year) and she rarely gets matts.:) Her hair is cut to be about a centimeter or two long. I don't really understand what you mean by detrimental to their look. I think it is adorable. I would rather the hair not be shaved to the skin though. |
I prefer the puppy cut over the long hair, but like others said it depends on the personality of the dog and the needs of the owner. I don't think one is better than the other! |
