~~~BuYinG A yOrkIe @ 8 MoNthS!!!~~~
Hi everyone! I am going to be picking up my yorkie on Friday morning. I took the day off so that I could have a long weekend with her. I am super excited! I know I could have bought one younger but I am confident with being selective and what can I say it was love at first sight!
Anyone have any stories about their dogs at 8 months old? Words of advice?
Also, she has a darker coat. I know she is not a mix, her pedigree is flawless. It just happens for some reason she has a darker black coat. I read that she could grow out of this but I would prefer her not to. Does anyone else have a dog that was black on the back at 8 months and it changed?
Thanks for welcoming me to the group!!!
Yes she is...here is another picture of her with a full coat that her breeder sent me. I read on this forum that sometimes it changes at age 3.
Part of the reason that I am getting her at 8 months is that all puppies sort of look the same...and it seems to be a gamble what they would grow up to look like. I mean you could look at her parents. I understand. But I actually like the darker color as well. So I am hoping she will keep it. It is part of what makes me like her look. So I really hope it doesnt change...but its all a gamble... haha
I was thinking the same thing... she will probably lighten up a bit but will probably always stay dark since she hasnt lightened as of yet:D :D
potty training
Do you think that it will be hard to potty train her? coming in at 8 months? And is there any behavior at 8 months ie. teething on things?
yorkiekist 09-26-2007 08:06 PM
WHAT A CUTE LITTLE DOLL!!! I think she will stay dark, maybe with age, turning claricle grey. Good luck with her. I can see why it was love at first sight!!!!! Lynn
it depends on her training so far on the Potty training.. I have a 7 month old and she is teething still. I just make sure she has chews to teeth on they help alot :)
Missing out on her puppy days
Oh..I forgot...I wanted to ask if you guys thought that missing out on her puphood makes it harder to bond?
Ladymom 09-26-2007 08:20 PM
IMG! She is gorgeous! Have you picked a name yet?
Saleswman 09-26-2007 08:44 PM
Georgia?
She is a cutie.....when I clicked on her pic it showed "GaShow". Is she a GA girl?
Her coat is dark...sometimes that means she will be soft coated.....you can tell by looking at her feet.......but, i dont think so....maybe modified silk.....
She is really sweet, who is her breeder?
:thumbup:
I think you should do well with your new older girl!!! I got my 2nd girl when she was 6 months and she fit in very fast. she was my surfer girl!!! She loved her hand ball and her surf board. I know she knew English. I started using sign language!!!LOL
Georgia
I went to Meetup.com and joined some groups in my area. There was a gentlemen that posted some pictures of his girls and they were just stunning. I sent him an email. He asked what particularly I was looking for. And I said a darker colored yorkie that would stay sort of small.
I was afraid of buying from a backyard breeder who could breed genetic defects or you know...potential dangers.
Anyway, the breeder actually actively shows his dogs. She just happened to be too dark and small...which are not points for showing but it was what I wanted...lol...
He has answered all my questions, given me advice and I am really confident with the whole transaction. That was important to me. He has referred me to a great vet in the area that specializes in the small breeds.
Alot of people try to sell Tea cup yorkies or these 2 lb yorkies and then they have problems later in life that will cost alot of money to the vets. This is really scary to think about when you are buying a dog. I mean it is sooooo hard to be confident and comfortable. So I think it is a little more then I was planning to spend, but the quality of this dog gives me peace of mind.
If you want to contact him about any other dogs he has available, give me your email and I will pass it along. He is very involved in placing them in a good home. I dont think he just sells them to any body. He kind of gives you an interview.
lol...I guess I am lucky now that i have reread this! haha!
She's a cutie. Atleast now you don't have to go through all that puppy stuff age.
What a beautiful girl! As far as bonding- I got Sugar when he was 17 months old and I always call him my doggy soul mate. Absolutely no bonding issues, it was love at first site for both of us. I think when it's right, it's right and it sounds like you have found the baby that was meant for you.
Nikki+2 09-27-2007 05:27 AM
One more thing to add- I've found that going through the puupyhood definitely doesn't guarantee a bond. I got my first yorkie, Gracie at 8 wks (too young I know but didn't know then). She could not have been a more loved and babied puppy. She went everywhere with me, I held her and fussed over her constantly. Guess what? She never bonded with me. She has always preferred my husband. It broke my heart until I got Sugar.
So I guess my point is, getting your girl older is a good thing. You know more about her personality and don't have to worry about surprises.
littlewhip 09-27-2007 05:35 AM
Wow she is so pretty:) Congrats:) I love the dark color to;)
NewYorkieMom52 09-27-2007 06:56 AM
Thanks guys!
Thanks again. I know I should probably post this somewhere else but, do you guys use wipes alot? For their Eyes and paws and things....I dont like the whole gunky eyes things....so I was thinking about getting some wipes to have handy....I dont even know if she will have this problem. So any grooming advice?
Sookie 09-27-2007 07:03 AM
Just wanted to say that she is gorgeous. I like the darker ones as well. I get a lot of compliments on Kalina's color.
Maureen, Jeannie showed me a picture you sent her of your two girls sitting back to back in their dresses and you are right, they are perfect. You should post pics sometime.
Hi and welcome to YT. Congratulations on your new little furbaby. I can just feel the excitement in your writing!!
Levi, our youngest little guy is 18 months old now. We got him last October when he was nearing 7 months old. We worried too about the bonding issue, etc. But we found out quickly that we worried and fretted for nothing. He made himself right at home as soon as we got him here and has been under foot ever since. We had no problem whatsoever potty training him to go outside. My husband was much more worried than I about an older puppy but after a few days with Levi he was very comfortable with the decision. It was kind of nice by-passing some of the real puppy stages if you know what I mean.
Also he was very dark when we got him and still is very dark. The breeder told me he would probably get to be a dark steel blue and it looks like he will be in time. He's still very black for the most part and his little face is dark too and I very much love him this way.
Best wishes and can't wait to hear more.
