X-MAS/Holidays With YORKIES Okay, I know it is a bit early to be preparing for this but.... Has anyone celebrated Christmas/holidays with their yorkies yet? This will be our (Daisy's) first Christmas and I am clueless as to precautions I should take. It seems just about everything (Xmas trees, decorations, tinsle, ornaments) is "hazardous/harmful" to our furbabies. Knowing me, I'd probably not want any of that if it puts Daisy in danger...but I'm sure my hubby wouldn't be happy with a "tree-less Christmas" since our family is always so festive.. What do yall recommend..as far as what type of Xmas tree is safe. How to keep tinsle/other holiday decor away from furbaby, etc... I'd really like yall to share your past holiday experiences with me... THANKS! |
Tinsel is not good for animals. This will be our first Xmas with 3 dogs. Pixie wasn't with us last year. We have gotten to the point of just putting a tree up with lights no ornaments (lazy). |
Lacy's never messed with anything on the tree...now, the cats..they sometimes bat at the ornaments. If you're worried, I would only let her around the tree when you're supervising her |
I don't know about all here, but I LOVE Christmas!!!! And I am not going without decoration. As puppies, I always keep my babies in the X-pen if we can not watch them anyway, at holidays too. If we are having a large group over I keep the little ones in the pen, the adults are out unless we are eating, (I don't want anyone to drop food and them get to it). They don't mess with anything, they are just not interested. The puppies on the other hand want everything, you have to watch out for the plugs and things like that. We always get them gifts and they know it. Some how they also know what gifts are it!! They have opened them before. You really have to watch other people if you have a group over, especially children. My adults do not stay under foot, if I feel that they are uncomfortable or nervous, they go in my bedroom with the tv on. But as far as the tree they never bother with it. |
Tinsel is all ways a no,cats especially like to eat the stuff. Live xmass trees I usually use a skirt to cover the water so the animals can't drink out of it, you never know what the trees were chemically treated with. Make sure the cords are out of reach, and unplugged when you aren't home. Ornaments that are expensive, sentimental, breakable at a higher level. Think of a place to put your tree/decorations so it can't be knocked down while you aren't home or if a game of chase occurs. |
can you put a pen or something around the tree..... Oh and doon't look at the newspapers, you may end up getting yourself another one... because after the holidays i bet i will see the paper big with pups for sale from people who can't take care of them any more... last year they has 2 full pages in the statesman with single pups for sale at low prices.. I wanted to get them so badly but i wasn't ready:( |
This is going to sound nuts, but has anyone thought of penning in the tree rather than the yorkie? I'm considering putting a gate around the tree since we have a lot of family ornaments and such, and I would also worry about the electrical cords. Has anyone done this? |

A YORKIE Christmas!!! 1 Attachment(s) We haven't had any probs with Shelby & Seymour during the holidays. They just like to "swat" at the bows on the gifts in hopes that they would fall off and they could chase them around the house. They even have their own "Yorkie" tree with ornaments that I have purchased just for them (and a few that were gifts from family). I kinda made our family room into a "Yorkie Christmas" room (stockings on the fireplace,,,, etc.) and the formal livingroom was for all the "Froo Froo" stuff! Here is a pic of them with their tree...... Attachment 150403 "While visions of sugar plums ......" |

Oh, what a great {and CUTE} idea!! I think I'm also gonna get the little pink (synethetic) Xmas tree for Daisy..I'm sure she'd appreciate a pink tree..unlike hubby.. :) |

I'm sooo with you! We all love Christmas...filled with all things shiny, pink, bows-all Maybe, I'll deal with no tinsel this Xmas... Hubby's not crazy about it anyway.. Although the "pen around the tree" sounds like a great idea, I don't think hubby will agree with that. It kinda ruins the "feel".. I do plan on keeping a close eye on Daisy (she's still in her NOSEY puppy stage) either way. |
I haven't had a problem's with my two yet at all. We have a fake tree with lights and ornaments and they have never even bothered with it. I think they barked at it the first day like "why is that big thing in my family room" but nothing after that! We don't use tinsel so that was never an issue. We only turn the tree lights on when we are home and in the room, plus they are pretty much never unsupervised. We do have stockings for both that hang on our fireplace with there names monogramed on them. Really cute! I had them made by "Personal Creations" as well as my husbands and mine! :D |
