Leaving babies at home when you travel... Well, I am curious about what other yorkie owners do when you need to leave them home for a few days when they can't travel with you. I had a friend watch them for a few days, but that was a disaster - she couldn't sleep at night, she didn't like having them in bed with her, my male pee peed in several places in her house, and her husband is not a dog person. She ended up bringing them back to my house and visiting/walking them twice a day. This breaks my heart, as this was the first time in the over two years that we left them behind. We have to leave for a few days next week and can't take them with us. Don't want to board them. Don't have children to stay and watch them. We have asked a neighbor to check on them and walk them, but it's not the same as having someone around to love them. What do the rest of you do??????? |
My mom watches them. They both love going there and she loves having them. I vacation 3-4 times a year so they go there pretty often. It's a bit of a hassle (because she lives 4 hours away), but it's worth it for piece of mind. |
In the over 1 year that we had Pepper we always took him with us but one time when we took our anniversary trip - he was boarded and I didn't have good experience with it. We don't go on vacation if we can't take him, but I know one day we will plan a trip again and I'll have a tough cookie with it... I won't leave him in a daycare anymore but I have no family in the US either. Maybe finding a paid sitter that will only take your dog for that time would be better |
My parents normally keep Sadie, but I'm going on a trip next week where I can't take her with me. So my fellow YTers Shana & Rockster's Mom are sharing babysitting duty! I love those guys...they're the best!!! (and I know she's going to come back to me even more spoiled than she already is!) |
We're in the same boat now with taking vacs with Izzy (we always go to B&B's and now we have to find B&Bs that are pet friendly so in October she's going with us on her first mini-vac!!). But I know there will be times when we can't take her (like when we go to Vegas, etc.). She will have to be boarded at our vets but they are great there. This is a time I wish some of my fellow YTers lived closer...we could have our own built-in furbaby sitting service. ;) |
I have my kids watch them if I have to go out of town, which isn't very often. |
My Husbands Brother watches them |
My mom always comes to stay with them at our house. I want to make sure they are taken care of the same way we do and get lots of attention! :) |
I left Momiji at her daycare last time. I don't know if she enjoyed or not.... I definitely prefer other yorkie lover to look after her but something it is difficult. If I'm close by, I'll definitely look after your baby. My Momiji loves a company so it will be fun for her. I left Momiji one time with other YT member and she LOVED it!!! She was so well taken care of, it was better than she was at home with me!!! YT member was so nice, her and her husband loved my baby!!!! So if it is weekday, I can help you but weekend I can't since I may be out of town and have to leave my baby at daycare for the weekend again.... :( Good luck!!! |
We have a pet sitter come and stay at the house with them. I met her through my vet where she works. We are going on a trip at the end of the month and unfortunately she was already booked. We are having a friend's step daughter come and stay with them and I am a nervous wreck. I think they'd have a breakdown if I kenneled them though. |
We usually take ours but if not we have family so we are lucky to have them. |

I left lulu with my parents when we went to disney. I would suggest maybe seeing if one of our fellow YTers would babysit for you or maybe pay for a licensed and bonded petsitter to come in and take care of them. |
We left lacey and all the rest of the dogs home in aug for 4 days and when i got back lacey was a total cling on for a while. but i knew they were all taken care of well by my son and friend, although in oct we are going to the keys and this time i dont want to leave her, i really wish we would have booked flights and hotels that took dogs grrr. we are doing the same thing as last time, my son is home all day with the dogs and friend (who has laceys sister) is taking her at night. |
Why don't you see if there are any fellow YT'ers in your area that would be willing to watch them while you are gone? Or maybe someone willing to come over and spend a few hours in the day and evening with them? This is such a great support network, and I'd trust my dogs with MANY people on this site. |
I haven't gone on vacation yet since my boyfriend got me Dunks (this was Christmas 2006). I am just sooo scared to leave him behind to go on vacation, even for just the weekend!! If we do go on a vacation, I will leave him with my sister and her husband. If they can't take care of him, my vet offers a doggie hotel. But that's my last resort. I don't want him caged up and be only let out a couple of hours a day since he runs around the house when we're at work... |
I am so willing to dogsit... I am usually home anyways and I know Dunks wouldn't mind having a playmate for the weekend or for the week... :D |
I have to board mine when we go out of town and the babies can't go. I have a grown son and daughter who live close by but they already have so much on their plates that I don't ask them. I have found a kennel that is great with little dogs and mine seem to do well there. I know they don't like it as much as being home but they do get playtime 4 times a day and all the dogs get turns going up front to the office to get some one on one attention. The kennel is run by all women and I know my dogs love them because when I go to pick them up they keep running between me and the women who have been taking care of them. The kennel is almost an hours drive from my house but it's worth the inconvenience to have them somewhere I'm comfortable with. I had to look at dozens of kennels before I found one that was acceptable. For any YT's in the Atlanta area needing a place to leave their baby while they go out of town. I'd be happy to help. |
This year was the first year, I'd ever left mine with anyone. Found a lady, I've been knowing for a long time that dog sits for extra money. Mine did well at her home, thank God! They even slept with her! Of course though, I was worried about them. I'm going on vacation next month for 6 days, and they'll be staying with her again. Check at vets offices, some times they have a card for someone who takes care of dogs. My friend advertises in a small magazine and drops them off at vets offices. Also look on bulletin boards at Vets offices, as some advertise there too. See if they will recommend anyone. |
We normally take them with us but if we really can't my son & girlfriend take care of them. I'm very lucky that they stay in the cottage on our property!! If I were you I'd try to find a YT member to leave them with, if I lived in the States I would:) :) |

Caren you are so sweet! As much as I love Sugar I wouldn't ever put you throught that. As you know he doesn't exactly play well with others.:p |
invest in some belly bands. My newer guy was marking up the house and Belly bands were a good solution for this. Even when his training is done I will have both my boys where belly bands when i travel back home and visit my families houses. |
