What else do I need? A litter box?

Oh and I know a crate should be just about large enough for it to lie down, sit up and turn around, but if i also put his food dishes and water in there, I'm afraid the size would have to be large, a 2 month old yorkie is pretty small, there isn't a small enough crate for it?

Should I buy a larger crate, big enough to put his water and food bowl, a bed and toys?

You don't want to keep food and water in the crate with the dog. It can make a mess and also will hurt potty training. If you think your yorkie will need the next size up as it grows, buy the bigger one and make sure it comes with a divider. That way you can give the puppy more space as it grows.

If the puppy is going to have to be left for more than a few hours at a time in the crate, you might want to get an x-pen..that way the puppy can have more room and access to food and water.

It all depends on how long you'll be gone during the day

I guess a long time then but I want to house break it first.

I'm guessing I won't be home for 7 hours every weekday. It will take time to litter train it too, should i make a xpen area for a dog with a bed, or put a crate in the xpen which acts as a bed?

If your going to be gone 7 hours at a time, I'd use an x-pen. You can put the crate in there, a litter box on one side, and food & water in there too..along with a few toys. You don't want to go 7 hours without a puppy eating, especially if it's only 8 weeks because it can become hypoglycemic. It is probably going to be hard to potty train being gone 7 hours at a time. If you were able to come home half way you could use a crate and potty training would probably go easier. There might be some others on here that got a puppy, being gone with hours like that so hopefully one of them can give you more advice. When I got Lacy, the most I'd be gone was a couple hours at a time for college classes, and then 4 hours at a time 3 days a week from the time she was 5 months until 8 months. My best friend got a puppy at the same time as me and worked all day (sometimes coming home at lunch) and she has always used an x-pen for her puppy. She put newspaper in there for about the first year, but he learned to hold it as he got older.

If you are in doubt if they are coming from a reputable breeder, you could contact a kennel club in your area for a list of other breeders. I would look at more than one litter and go from there. I would request a 72 hour vet check guarantee for a full refund of the purchase price as well as a 1 or 2 year health guarantee. The pup should have at least 2 sets of shots and have been wormed. Request to see the sire and dam. Sometimes the sire is not there as they might have used an outside stud. They should have pictures of him though. Notice if the breeding/house area is clean as well as the dogs. The breeders should already have the registration papers ready for you. The puppies should be happy, healthy and socialized. Most reputable breedes will only sell with a spay/neuter/limited contract. Good luck finding the best puppy ever!!!!!!!! Lynn

As a breeder, I give all my owwn shots and dewormings myself so I really don't know what your cost will be plus in different areas it is different prices. here in Ky., it is pretty cheap.

He should offer you the guarantee of health, and disclose how they are registered.

Yea I go for university and come back at around 3 to 3:30 so I will have quite a long time to play with them, another wierd question, does it matter when they sleep? not how much but when? I usually sleep after midnight, I guess I want to puppy to get used to the time schedual in this house and if he does then he wouldn't wake up at lets say 5 in the morning cause he slept at 10

I am VERY excited! :)

Most breeders in our area do not offer one-year health guarantees. The breeder I'm buying from does not, although they verbally said they will refund money or give a new puppy if one of their dogs is unhealthy. Her husband is a vet, and selling unhealthy puppies would ruin his practice. She has a waiting list of those wanting to buy her puppies. As long as people are willing to buy puppies without health guarantees, there will always be breeders selling puppies without them. And that makes it harder for those who want the guarantee to get one. Also, just because a breeder offers a health guarantee doesn't mean he/she will honor it, as has been the case reported on this board at least once.

I don't think it matters when they sleep. Your puppy will adjust to your schedule.
