100% yorkie or not? Hi, I'm new to this site. I'm wondering if there is anyone out there than can help me figure out if my 'yorkie' is 100%. He was sold to me as a purebred but at 7 months old I'm not convinced. Some say yes, including a breeder and some say not a chance, including a breeder. It makes a difference to me. I've saved for a couple years to make this purchase. I did research breeders, but could not find a local breeder that had pups ready. I chose not to import one because of potential hazards, loss or suffering for the pup in transport. And of course the possibility of getting ripped off. I feel I've been had and just want some peace of mind. I realize there is no guarantee of weight or ears standing. My questionable signs are: 1. At 7 months he is 12lbs, he doesnt get people food and barely eats the amount eukenuba recommendeds 2. His ears are big and floppy compared to all other yorkies Ive researched 3. He has huge front paws, no kidding :animal-pa :animal-pa 4. His tail is docked but is curled up. Those are the most obvious. He obviously has yorkie in him but seems to have something else like a lhaso or maltese. Ill try to post pictures, but like I said, this is new to me, hopefully I will find my way back here for feedback. Thank you in advance, hopefully someone can help me. |
Once you post a pic people here will be able to help you.. And just because hes 12 lbs and has floppy ears doesnt make him not yorkie.. Alot of yorkies are over standard.. and the breeder may never have taped his ears.. Not sure about the rest of the stuff though.. Can't wait to see a pic of him! |
Hi and Welcome to yt:) please post a pic of your furbaby:) we would love to see him:) yorkies come in all shapes and sizes;) |
My appologies, I'm having trouble attaching a photo. |

puppy I think he is just an oversized variety! Best wishes |
Your pictures may be too large. Try resizing them to a smaller size. Then go to manage attachments under submit post, and click on it. It'll let you browse your pictures, and upload them. I just got a new Biewer and he is 13 pounds, but he's all Biewer. Yorkies like people come in all different sizes. Do you have any papers on him like AKC, etc.? |
I would not worry at all! just love your yorkie for who they are! i have an 11 month old yorkie that is almost 15 pounds. when i took him to get his first grooming when he was 5 months the lady there was REALLY rude! she has a little yorkie and she told me that mine is way to big, she asked if i had papers, and told me i was charged way to much for the size that he is! like everyone tells you their ALL different shapes and sizes just like ppl! |
If he is the one in the av picture, he looks all Yorkie to me, some are just bigger, but they are still Yorkies. |
Looks all yorkie to me.I have two big boys 13lbs and 18lbs.I have noticed that the "bigger" yorkies have floppy ears. He is a sweetheart and 100% yorkie!! |
He is adorable. I think that he is 100% but just a bigger one. I was at the vet earlier and I saw the most beautiful little yorkie, he was 4 months old and weighed 5.7 lbs, he had gained 2 pounds in 3 weeks, and his feet was huge too, and he was 100% yorkie too-they will just be a little bigger, but just as sweet and adorable. |
Thank you, he is very cute, he has quite the personality and energy. We love him regardless of size. If I'm not sure of his breed 100% then I have a difficult time defending him, if that makes sense. We don't have papers for him, is there a way to have him registered? I'm still working on pic posting... |
In looking at your avatar and the picture of him as a puppy, he looks all yorkie to me. I bet he's just on the bigger side, that's all. If you are still having problems posting pics, just PM me and I'll be happy to post them for you. |
Thank you for your reply's :daisy: I'm convinced. It may seem like it didnt take much, but I trust yorkie owners opinions. I look forward to learning more from this site as well as posting :2photo: effectively. |
My Yorkie sounds just like your description. I met his parents who are 6 and 7 pounds. We chose the most curious, largest of the litter (there were six!!!!). We now have a very happy, healthy, active 8 month old Yorkie who weighs almost 12 pounds and can walk for 7 kilometres and beg for more. My husband is thrilled by his size because he wanted a huge dog. There are times I have pangs for a 6 pounder but I wouldn't trade my Ziggy for anything. Charlene |
That's a good point, Charlene.... Before I got my yorkie babies, I envisioned being able to take them along for lots of walks and adventures. I've tried it a few time, but my girls (4 and 5 lbs) poop out REALLY quickly, and just want to be carried the rest of the way! :D |
I hope you manage to post pics, it would be lovely to see him. However from your avatar I think he is completly yorkie. I have a 12lb boy with big floppy ears and a thick coat, some people do tell me that he can't be a full yorkie but I assure them that he absolutly is. I actually love that he's bigger, he is so cuddly and enjoys nice long walks with me :) |
I'd be willing to bet he is full yorkie, just larger. Just like people, yorkshire terriers come in all sizes. I had a long haired chihuahua that ended up being about 15 pounds and I know she was 100% chihuahua. There are quite a few 10+ pound yorkies on here and I know of two in my small town. I think in any breed you can find some alot bigger than the norm and some alot smaller. Ears standing doesn't really even have to do with size or purebred. Carmen Electra has a very very tiny yorkie(who you know is full blooded) yet has ears that lay down. While your boy is probably not quite what you pictured size wise, I'd bet he has the great personality yorkies tend to have. |
I agree with others that according to your avatar he looks like a Yorkie. When I bought Wistin, he had one brother. The brother was much bigger and ears down. The vet would be able to tell you for sure if he is mixed with anything. I bet he is just a healthy, happy big boy. Enjoy him he will not be as fragile if he keeps growing. From what I can see he is a real cutie. |
He looks all yorkie to me. I just got my new Biewer and he's big too, but he's just as beautiful as can be. |
100% yorkie or not? My daughter has a "yorkie" that is 11Ibs. I have a yorkie that is 6Ibs. and we bought them at the same time, the breeder swears that they are from the same litter, we had quite a discussion about the size and color. My Monty is dark&silver, Toby is silver with blonde head, and he has the biggest ears, When we brought them home they were both dark, almost the same size. We have talked with different owner's of yorkie's and they also say that they come in different sizes, we thought we had a "silkie". My daughter wanted a smaller size , so we got Tia, 3Ibs. She looks just like Toby (same Coloring) silver and blonde, go figure? So we have 3 different yorkie,'s, different coloring, but they are all the same to us, we love them to death, Toby(big gahoona) Monty (little boy) Tia, (little retreiver)I will get the pictures of all the babies, will have them soon, especially my Monty Nanagirl62 |
Yorkies come in all sizes and colors for all of us in different shapes and sizes to enjoy. I love them all. |
I had no idea there were such a variety of yorkies. I think it's great. I look forward to learning more. |
4 Attachment(s) Our Tucker, also referred to as Tubby Tucker, is 14.5 pounds.........all yorkie! His parents were 4 and 4.5 pounds. He just kept growing and is beautiful. He has so much hair that one summer when it was hot I gave him a puppy cut because he was making me hot just looking at him. There is a thread on YT about teapot Yorkies. You will find there is a lot more to love with a teapot. First pic Tucker was just over a year old. He looks like his ears are flopped but his ears are small and he had so much hair that his ears disappeared. Second pic is on a "REALLY BAD" hair day. He took to digging a hole in the wet yard. It took three times soaping him up to get all the dirt off. The last two pictures were taken recently. He is my big boy. |

Just like everyone else was saying 12lbs doesn't make him not a yorkie. Ears come in all sizes and usually have to be taped or at least trimmed in order to stand up on their own. Its kind of hard to tell much from your small profile picture but looks yorkie to me, if he is mixed with anything I'd guess Silky, but still high probably he's just a bigger yorkie. Our little guy came from champion parents and has the same kind of tail it sounds like where its just a little longer than the normal docked length and curls up. I thought it was kinda weird at first but now love it! It gives him so much personality :) |
I'm no expert but far as I can tell, he looks all Yorkie, and cute to boot. What is his name? He may get somewhat larger or may not. My two stopped growing at six months. I have to say ---- Tucker is a handsome boy. Love the picture of his wet yard adventure. |
no one can tell u for sure if ur yorkie is 100% yorkie, but as long as hes healthy then i dont really see a problem :) |
