Has any body waited to have their baby spayed Monday morning I am taking my little girl in to be spayed she just turned 3 yrs in Aug. It is more dangerous for them? I am wanted her spayed before she comes into season again which can be anytime now. DH and I don't want her to have puppies. We were going to have our new little boy C.J. neutered first he is 6 months. But we changed our minds and getting Taffy done first and then C.J. But I am concern about Taffy....I don't want anything to happen to her. When we got Baby (my Bassett mixed) spayed, she was 3 1/2 yrs and just came out of season or at least we thought she did....:( We almost lost her the vet kept her for 3 extra days.. He said it was a close call... Our vet is a old time farm vet. Taffy will spend the night there. I am just so worried about her. We weren't going to do this but after I got our little male things changed. We don't want puppies... Has anybody run into any other problems or will she be ok?? Can everyone say a little prayer for her, please.. |

As long as your dog is healthy and doesn't have any underlying health problems, it is no more dangerous to spay an adult dog than a puppy. Puppies do heal faster than adult dogs, so your girl will probably seem to be more sore longer than she would be if she was a puppy. Other than that though she should be fine. I don't think the reason your basset almost didn't make it was because of her age - there was some other problem there. Adult dogs are spayed all the time with no issues. The fact that you called your vet an "old farm vet" does concern me. I'm sure he's a great vet, but he may not be current on the safest and newest things out there. It's really important for vets to continue their education after vet school and attend conferences and read journals and all to make sure they know the latest things developing in the veterinary world. Plus, a vet in a mixed practice is dealing with horses, cows, dogs, cats, etc and I just don't know how they can know enough about every species to effectively treat them all. So far as your girl's spay - a blood work up is a must to make sure she's completely healthy and doesn't have any underlying health problems that you aren't aware of. Your vet also needs to be familiar with toy breeds since they are so small. Once she's through the procedure she'll need some pain meds as she heals and you'll need to try to keep her as still as possible for a week to help her heal. Even if she thinks she feels all better after a couple days, still keep her calm because she could tear her stitches. I wouldn't wait any longer because the older they are, the harder the surgery is on them and the more chances of health problems developing with age. I would go ahead and do it. She should be just fine. |

aww I'm sorry you're nervous. :( I would say go ahead and do it! Maddie is 4 now. We got her from a breeder because she was used for breeding, but they retired her. We've been putting it off because when Tucker's mom got spayed, she turned nasty. Though now his breeders think that she got nasty because of their new baby, instead of the spay. We should be getting her done soon.... |

Thank you both for giving me support on this. I think that is why I have kept putting it off getting her spayed I was afraid something would happen to her. I am a worry wart. When I said our vet is a "old country vet" that is what he is. He has always been there for my family pets. I really miss our other country vet. You could call him any time of day or night and he would be there for you and your four legged friend. But he passed away about 7 yrs ago from cancer. I been seeing this other vet now 6 yrs. But he is not the same as my other one but he is goo and there if you need him. Thank you again. |

I would just make sure they do the bloodwork before. That will tell them that her kidney and liver functions are good and she can tolerate the anethesia. |

I'm sure she'll be ok. I know here in Florida if you get an animal it has to be spayed/neutered before you can take it home no matter how old it is. |

Thanks for the response. I will make sure about the blood test. I just don't want anything to happen to my baby. Thanks again |

I agree, have him do the pre-surgery bloodwork...I think maybe your bassett had such a hard time could possibly be because of the type of anesthesia used..."Old time vets" tend to use injectable anesthetics which can be very dangerous for these little yorkies...In today's day and age, your vet should be using gas anesthetics like isoflourine and sevoflourine...These are MUCH safer and your dog is able to wake up as soon as they take off the gas...With the injectables, the drugs are in their blood system, so if anything goes wrong or they gave too much, well...the dog's going to have a very hard time.. |

another consideration I've always been told that if they are spayed too close to going into or out of heat bleedin is a much greater concern. |

That is what happened to Baby. We thought she was totally out of heat and it was to soon. She lost a lot of blood. That is why the vet kept her 3 extra days. He put her on soft food (which I still give her a little in the morning) and called everyday to report on her even though I called every morning and evening. I gave her a little soft food as a special treat for her supper tonight since she can't have anything now until everything is said and done. Please keep her in your prayers. |

I haven't spayed Bella yet. One of the vet techs at my vets office told me it costs more to spay them if they're in heat. Is it that hard sometimes to tell if they're in heat or not? Bella's 8 months now and so far I've seen no signs. I'd hate to bring her in and have her in heat or have something happen because she is. Should I wait until after she's gone into heat? |

We will say a pray for you both. When we rescued Maggie from the puppy mill she was three and in bad shape. We got all the blood work done first .we put her on a good diet. and I walk her to try to get her strong enough for her surgery. She did great, healed great and my vet is a farm vet also. She will do fine..So mom take a deep breath and try to relax |
