Some people have a crazy sense of humor. My mom and dad both would have said something like that not meaning any offense. I would have gotten offended but I would have actually been honest and said the fact that you called it a rat offends me.. IF the dogs looks like a rat to her I am so not mad at her... to me some yorkies do look like rats because of the way they are bred and some are small like rats, thus the joke. This is a thing where you simply need to know when to brush things off your shoulder. just because someone jokingly calls something a rat doesn't necessarily mean that they mean it... its up to u to let it stress u out or not. |
I dont' really think that lady was meaning to be rude. (although her comments were.) that is just some people's way. My son calls my yorkies ...'kick me dogs'...he is in no way wanting to be mean. he would never, ever kick a dog. he is a dog lover. he would perfer a much larger dog. and that is why he calls them 'kick me dogs'. Too trivial to raise my blood pressure for. besides, the term 'rat dog' pertains to their ancestors profession. Now that is something to be proud of... I could never catch a rat with my teeth even if I wanted to.:rofl28ib: |
After thinking about this last night and talking it out with you all, What ticked me is the way she said ( ya i know what IT is ) all she wanted to know is the price of her and by the sounds of it a small dog, ok now we all know how that makes us feel here, maybe i should of gave her some info and been a little nicer, after talking with my sis this am, she said not to worry about it, her neighbor is noisy and now looking to buy a bishon, last week she was looking to buy a doberman, I said well y didnt you tell me that last night, now i feel stupid, what im trying to say is ( I dont think she is buying a dog period)maybe she was making conversation, my sis said ya she is always asking me werid things:rolleyes: great:( |
i have a werid neighbor too, i do what i can to avoid her but it never works, if i walk outside its like she watching and follows me or my husband out to talk and she is just C R A Z Y!!! she woke me up around 8 in the morning to see if i wanted to go to chuckee cheese with her and her kid (who by the way can barely walk) i went outside to "get away" from the family and she made a bee line for me and asked how i was, i replied that i was in a funk and came outside to get away, she didnt take the hint. i know she is trying to be nice and friendly but she and her hubby are just weird..heck they might think im weird too..lol..my mom says every neighborhoods have one = ) |

Don't sweat the small stuff. |
what I dont understand is how....you can possibly think a yorkie looks like a rat. I have a yorkie and I have seen a rat but my yorkie is much cuter and does not look like a rat. It's a shame that some people are so ignorant! |
3 Attachment(s) Here is my little rat she was referring to... this pic was taken on sat:) |
I did not read all the responses , so please understand if this comes out sounding silly. But ony being able to read what happened to you and not being there in person, I feel the readers could take it in differrent ways. I understand that it hit you in a way that you needed to vent , especially without the support of your sis. And it seemed like she just yelled it out with out so much as an introduction or some nicety.....ANyway , My 17 year old son has had the most loveable pet rats , not much smaller that my furbaby. They do share the little sniffing nose and black trusting eyes. My son calls my Kirby a rat sometimes ...thinking they are sweet little things. His vet jsut adores his rats too. I hope you situation ended up on a good note, sorry you had to go thru these unpleasant feelings/situation.:aimeeyork |
Good rule of thumb... "If it isn't fatal, it's no big deal.":D |
I think your sister needs a taller fence. ;) This woman just sounds like she lacks proper communication skills. Consider the source and shrug it off. We all know our babies are wonderful, even if some people have negative things to say about them. I've heard everything from "rat" to "yappy" and everything in between. I just chalk it up to ignorance, just as I may be ignorant about other breeds myself. |
Thanks all, its already forgotten;) |

1 Attachment(s) :) Take it as a compliment! I have pet rats in my menegerie-- they're cute, smart, and clean little things. I consider them my babies too. Dunno how anybody could find a mug like this one hideous... he may not be a yorkie, but he's cute in his own way. |
The same situation happened to me the other day. I was walking Watson and a couple were walking past me. The guy said to the girl, "Look, he has a rat on a leash". I was so mad, I told him "You can learn from me and put that wild boar on a leash". That shut both of them up pretty quick. I don't care how rude that was....if he was saying that about Watson. I'll always have Watson's back, cause he always has mine!!:) |
I must say, so I don't look like a complete jerk...I said that more under my breath. They know I said something, but I'm sure they couldn't hear exactly what I said. I'm honest and like to think I show everyone respect (especially peopel I don't know), so I hate it when people are rude & inconsiderate..sorry, thats all!! |
Honestly, i would have got offended too because, Missy is basically like my daughter, sister etc. So I wouldn't like it if someone referred to my daughter or sister as a "rat" it is rather insulting. But, there are certain people who do not literally mean it, as in they look like it, more like they're size.... because they are small, they instantly think about something smaller (rat) but yeah, it is kind of insulting, if you care for your little one a lot! Missy was mistaken for a cat before lol, because of her pointy ears, the guy spotted her from a far distance though, all he saw was the ears pointing up hehe, she has only been called an Agoubrah-- assyrian word for Rat, by my cousin, because of her size... but I smacked him over the head, so he won't call her that anymore. |
I have never had someone say that to me, but a relative made a comment about the dogs looking like "refugees" after I gave then all puppy cuts for the summer. I really took that badly, but shook it off. She does not have furbabies and does not know the love we have for them!! |
Wow that lady was def. rude, it aggrevates me when people call Lucy, Max or Mazie "little rat dogs" too, my cousins do it jokingly and that's okay because they have a maltese, who is now like 25 pounds (she's a little overweight) but they know they can't say much because she used to be a little dog too. But I do have to admit that when they are wet getting a bath they do look like little rats, but they are so cute. I think some people just think everyone who has a small dog only has one as an accessory and I always try to stress to people that I didn't buy Lucy as an accessory that I bought her because I love her and she's my little girl. |

some people are just jerks, and some of us need to have the right answer.. when she said you dog looks like a rat, i would of said your mother looks like a rat..... i lash right back and i dont care who it is... believe me. lexi is my pride and joy and i'd be dammed if anyone is going to say a bad thing about her.. hell no |

This topic is really interesting and got me thinking what if it happens to me lol. If the person is just joking or trying to be friendly, I am very much okay with it. BUT if the person is trying to be sarcastic/rude/mean... I think I would have said, "and you look like a pig" and walked away. |
thats a good one:thumbup: |

That was very rude, but I think you handled it right. Just ignore the comment and walk away, hoping they never get a yorkie because they don't deserve one. |
Most of the time people say something stupid or rude is because they are at a loss for words, may wish they had whatever you have (especially if it's a Yorkie) so they say something ignorant; or they are insecure and uncomfortable and just say the first thing that pops in their head. In the big picture of life, how significant is this event?:questione Grammy :) PS A bit of trivia-- Yorkies were originally bred as 'ratters' - dogs who find and kill rats. They have a keen sense of hearing and smell and can get into incredibly small places. My Ollie brought me his 2nd and 3rd mouse this week. The third one was still alive. He brought it into the living room. I call him my little ratter.:p Now there's fodder for a whole weeks worth of banter! :bleh: LOL:D |
