Pet urine on ceramic tile HELP!! Hi, I need a little advice on how to effectively clean a tile floor. Our entryway and main hall way has ceramic tile. It's a lovely floor, but unfortunately I have a somewhat incontinent dog in my house. It would appear that the dog's urine has seeped into the grout, and needs to be cleaned. It's always in the constant spot. He does it when I am not home. When I am home he doesn't do it. Maybe once when i wasn't looking. I can't yell at him for something he did that I wasn't home. We normally use bleach and water, or ammonia-type cleaners on the floor, but they don't seem to take away the urine smell for long. Are enzyme cleaners what I should be using? I've used Natures Miracle and Urine Off. I've seen people mentioning sealing grout - should I be doing this? Does anyone have any advice or ideas for me? I'd appreciate any information! I like to keeping our home clean. |
we have rental properties and are faced with this problem quite a bit. if you let clorox sit on it for a few minutes, it should clean up. also, a whitening toothpaste gets the stain out. I would treat it with an enzyme cleaner first to get the bacteria and any "smells" out of it. then to get the discoloration out, either of those 2 methods should work. |
Try regular white vinegar. That supposedly gets rid of the smell and does a great job cleaning! I hope that helps!! :) |
After you get the smell out, seal the grout. It does not let anything penetrate. When we sealed ours, you painted it on the grout (and do this every 3 - 4 years, I think). Now they have a spray (I think I saw at Home Depot) that is very easy to use. |
Yes, I think i will seal the grout cause of all the rubbing on the gout of cleaning the grout seem to be descending. Once he pee on the spot the urine expand up and down, left and right of the grout. Vinegar is a strong smell if not diluted. Should i dilute the vinegar before applying it to the grout? What enzyme cleaner is good to clean out the grout? I got urine-Off the infommercial and it suck. I thought it was a enzyme cleaner, but guess not. I will have to go to home depot later to get the grout sealer. |
Yes, get an enzyme cleaner like Nature's Miracle and let it soak on the grout for a while. Stop using bleach, it makes the smell worse and also ruins the grout. GOOD LUCK, I have the same issue, but with my beautiful red, expensive sectional sofa:cry: |
You should alwasy seal the grout when you put down tile. We have done tile in our home. We put two coats of sealer on the grout. |
I use CLR, the liquid. I put it in a spray bottle, spray the area, then use an electric toothbrush for scrubbing. I let it sit and wipe off with water after about 15 minutes. When it thoroughly dries (about thirty minutes) my grout is as white as can be. I then use Windex for shine....... |
I don't have any suggestions for cleaning, but have you thought about putting a potty pad down in that area? |
I just did this to my grout and tile this wekeend. SAME exact situation as you. Murphy and Mia will not potty in the house while I am home but will every now and than when I am not. I used a urine cleaner on the grout before to get the smell out - left it on there for about 15 minutes and than wiped it up - than I took Soft Scrub with bleached and lined the tile to make a paste and left that on there for about 20 minutes. It took the dark out and cleaned it really well. Now I am going to go get a sealer this wekeend and seal it like everyone else is suggesting. Good luck ~ hope this helps you!! |
there are several enzyme cleaners out there. the one we use and LOVE is called "kids & pets" and it can be found at wal-mart and target. Quote:

If all else fails, Home Depot has an acid based grout cleaner that is wonderful. I can't remember the name but it comes in a yellow bottle. When I bought my house, the previous owners had put down ceramic tile in the kitchen years ago but failed to seal it. The grout was suppose to be a light gray but was black instead because it had never been sealed! I tried eveything to clean it including soft scrub and bleach but it made no difference. I used this grout cleaner from Home Depot and a special wire brush for cleaning grout (also available there) and it made the grout look brand new. If too much of the grout has worn away, you may need to add some. |
How about one of those steam cleaners... Its called "the shark" or something. I have been so tempted to get one? |

I'm glad I read this, because I'm going to tile my floors and didn't even know you had to seal the grout. |
I just went to home depot and got the "windex with vinager" and 2 bottles of grout sealer. I steam the tiles, put windex vinegar then grout sealer hope this works. I should've went with concrete flooring they are much better and nicer. I have concrete floors at work and they are beautiful. |
I just finished installing tile floors in 2 bathrooms and the kitchen and still have the entry way to do. You definitely need to seal the grout. It doesn't hurt it to have 2 or 3 coats either. Sealing needs to be repeated every 5 years or so. When it starts looking dull again. Sonya |
I have the same problem. I think this long weekend we are going to clean and seal our grout, woo woo :) |
How to clean per urine odor and stains out of grout I will make a list of everything on the Internet that everyone CLAIMS to have worked for them and /or eliminated the problems. 1) A White Vinegar baking soda paste I made. 2) Plain White Vinegar 3) CLR 4) Zep grout cleaner 5) Soft Scrub 6) "Professional" enzyme grout cleaner 7) Hydrogen Peroxide 8) Hydrogen Peroxide and baking soda paste I made. 9) Miracle Acidic Cleaner 10) Natures Miracle pet odor and stain remover/cleaner 11) OxiClean 12) Tilex 13) Bleach and water mixture 14) PURE Bleach I could go on and on but let me just put ANYONE who is desperate to solve this issue out of their MISERY and tell you what works. AJAX power cleanser and a grout scrub brush .......most probably refer to it as (comet cleanser) BUT dont be fooled by that green can your Mom and Grandmoms and Moms before them all used ........AJAX has something in it called "OXYGEN BLEACH POWDER" which Comet cleanser DOES NOT ! Therfore it doesnt solve the odor of the stains. |
I just dealt with this the other day. Gabby has taken to using my powder room as her potty area. I just installed those tiles and hadn't gotten around to sealing the grout. DO NOT STEAM IT. Steam don't kill the odor. I used Advantage 20X citrus cleaner (yes, as seen on tv and this stuff works amazingly well). Spray the cleaner and scrub with wire grout brush. Let dry. Stains were gone. Next I applied "Out" enzyme liberally. Let dry overnight and applied Boundary. She hasn't been in there since. Worked on my marble too, although it didn't fix the etching. |
Mop the floor with warm water and a vinegar solution. Mix 1/2 cup vinegar with a gallon of water and proceed to mop as usual. If the floor still doesn't look as clean as you would like, mop the floor again using fresh water and detergent. Rinse the floor with clean warm water after you are done washing it. It is important to remove all residual soap from the tiles so it doesn't remain on the floor to attract and hold dirt. Do not use vinegar or chemicals on marble flooring. |
I've got this problem now. Does Nature's Miracle really work? What about Mr Clean Antibacterial? |
My honest advise AVOID CHEMICALS!....I would use a Steam Mop, it cleans great, kills 99.99% of bacteria and is Chemical Free so you don't have to worry if your puppy licks the floor. |
But the directions says it can change the tile color which I'm worried about. If the small bottle works in going to have to get more than one large bottle. I've never used a steam cleaner machine so I'll check them out. Thanks. |
