Runaway Yorkie.. :( HI. I need advice on Megan. I've had her for almost 4 weeks. she's 7 months old. she always stays right by my feet But I've had to start putting her on a leash when we go outside (we live in the country) B/c she will start for the road and I call her & she ignores me. I go for her and she runs. (Fast) Man I didn't know I could still run like that, when she picks up something in the house she knows she s not supposed to have. She runs. HOW DO YOU TEACH A DOG NOT TO RUN FROM YOU?? :( HELP.:aimeeyork |
I don't know, but would like to know. Ours takes off too. They never ever leave the house without a harness. Taking no chances here. |
You have to let them know that you are in charge, and when they run away yell at them in your mad tone. A good way to do this, is go to a pet training class and you will learn "come when called". |
Mad voice I did.get on her in my MAD:mad: voice & also put her in the playpin for 10 Min. :D But I'm affraid to take her out now without a leash.:animal36 |
I wouldn't let her out without a leash from now on because for her it's all become a FUN game - let's see how fast mommy can run - LOL! Also, in the house do not chase her. You need to teach her to come to you (bribe her with a treat at first) for only good things. I never call my two to come when it's something they don't like doing (tooth brushing, grooming, etc.) - I walk by them and nonchalantly scoop them up for those times. They've learned that when I say 'come' that it's only for good things and they come all the time:) |
There was a thread about hand training, and it teaches your dog to come to your hand whenever you show it. There were a lot more things you could teach your dog, but I don't remember everything it said. Also, try teaching the stay command. |

You need to train her to do a reliable recall. This takes a lot of time, IMO because you need to know they will do it 100% of the time. Training classes can help you with that. I know Mckenzie was allowed to go in the front yard off leash up until a few weeks ago.. but now she gets the zoomies and attempts to go into the neighbors yard so it's only harness outings for her :) |
Oh and another thing in case she happens to get away from you again :). I run AWAY from them and yell for them in a happy voice so it turns into chase mommy instead of lets RUN from mommy LOL. |
Train her. Yes. But I'm going to give you some good advice. Never, ever take her out without a leash. They are terriers, or is it terrorists?:D Anyway, all they need to see is a rabbit, a squirrel, or anything else of that ilk, and they are gone. Lots of people have learned the hard way and lost their little yorkies forever. I'll always say to train them, but it isn't worth the risk to take them out without a leash. |

But NEVER chase in the house, and ALWAYS treat when they come no matter what - as I say - even if they ate your checkbook - if they come, the get a treat! |
our takes off after cats bunnies, squirels.....even birds.r'nt they natural hunters? |
My .02: * An obedience class would be best, but in the short term, teach a good sit, stay and come. * We played a fun "come" game when Eddie was young. I would have someone hold him and I would walk several steps away. I'd call him in an animated voice while my assistant was letting him go. He would race to me, and I'd praise, praise, praise and treat. Gradually increase the distance. Eventually, start hiding and make your pup find you. Eddie is very good, but to be honest he's not perfect. I find that his "stay" is his best command. When he runs away and doesn't come, I can always get him to stay. He learned that well through obedience classes that taught long, extended stays. He had to wait 4 minutes in a sit-stay before I called him. I know others feel differently, but I would discourage you to scold him when he runs away. My feeling is that's just going to make them not want to come even more. Say come once or twice. If he doesn't come, walk as calmly as possible and pick him up or leash him. That's where the look-who's-boss comes into play. You always win. Then work harder on the sit-stay-come commands. Good luck. |
i have the problem with cody to "come" on command. when he has gotten something he isnt suppose to or he has been chewing on things when he isnt suppose to. I tell him NO. but he keeps on and when i try to divert him with a toy it doesnt work. i tell him to come and he wont and i try to get him to put him in the pen he starts the chase me game. |
Just keep saying the word come, and when he comes to you give him a treat. That way he will learn that the word come, also comes with a treat. It does take a while, but he will learn in time. Good luck, I thnk you need it. LOL. |
You've already gotten great advice, but I wanted to just add one thing: NEVER punish in any way when she finally does come to you. No yelling, or time out, just happiness, kisses and a treat. If you yell or something, she'll start to associate coming to you with bad things. Plus, terriers are known to love the chase:laugh: |
I could never take my boys off leash anywhere! I wish I could but they would be gone in a second! Ive just resigned myself to having to keep them on leash all the time when outside. I don't know about you but it seems they think they are indestructable (even to motorcycles haha - my boys go spastic over motorcycles and airplanes (in the sky)) haha also they get distracted by every litttle thing and then its like a frenzy and they dont even hear my commands. Id be VERY careful taking your baby off leash outside ever! Just in case!! :) |
COME WHEN CALLED To me this is the most valuable thing that we have learned in classes, Peanut doesn't have it to 100% yet... but we're working on it |

Demi's come command is not 100%, but her sit command is. If she won't come, I yell 'Sit!' and she'll stay put till I get to her and grab her. It's an alternative. That said, Demi is always on a leash when we're outside. |
^Good point... there are cetain things that certain dogs adhere to well, SIT, STAY, WAIT, etc... figure out whichever gets the best response from yours and use that until some more training/learning can be implemented... Shy away from running, yelling, and flailing... that generally means that "we're playing" or "I'm in trouble" either way, you don't get the response you want! |

I had another thought too. Although I too agree it's best to keep them on leash at all times.... in cases of emergencies, you have to have a plan. Earlier I told about running AWAY from Roxie once to get her to come back (she'd run nearly a block before I got her to return). But I also say "treat" nearly every time I give my pups one. It's not part of the command but part of the reward. So I've been able to get their attention by yelling "treat!" as well. Coby (6 months old) got out through the garage door just last night and started down the driveway. My husband started to chase him. I hollered "don't chase him!" and ran and got the treat tin. I shook the tin and yelled "treat!" (both sounds music to his ears) and he came right back!! Avoid problems (always on leash) but have an emergency plan!! |

what about a 'clicker'? start using it in the house/garden..everytime you 'click' give her a small treat...then start using it when shes out on the lead..'click & treat' and then progress to using it off the lead? i'm thinking of using one with Pixie. |
You need to teach the come and stay commands |
Cooooookkkiiiiiiiieeeee!!! Treat trick works well here too, but we say COOKIE...and she knows exactly what to do. MANNNN, if you shook a box of chocolate at me, I would certainly RUUNNNN towards you too! :D |

Two of my babies no problem will stay by my side and will come back if they wander too far when called, but Wizzar NO WAY!!!!!! We had him in the back of the car going to the vet ( he knows the way!!!!) we stopped to get petrol and i got out to pay. My husband opened the car and Wizzar bolted, across the road between a truck and a bus over a ditch and off into the fields. My husband gave chase but the more he ran the more Wizzar ran ( what a great game daddy!!!!) he eventually cornered him after he had found the biggest pile of cow poop and rolled in it. I still laugh when i think of the two of them running around this huge field, hubbie screaming at this small dog!!!!!! Very funny!!!! |
How horribly scarey...my heart would have dropped to the floor, bet it wasnt funny at the time. If you think about it....HE knew he was headed to the vet, so cant blame him for escaping...and what a treat for the vet...A COW POOP SMELLING YORKIE-That will teach him for checking his privates-"wanna check my privates...here smell this!"...:D Your poor husband, did he get a treat for his chase??????? Glad your story ended happy. |
When hubbie eventually got him he was mad but hugged Wizzar and gave him a chew stick because we rescued him. He had been beaten and left for the worst so we would never smack him!!! He got wrapped in a blanket and brought to the dog wash back at the petrol station!! He was exhausted when he got to the vet slept through his boosters!!! |
