You've already gotten great advice, but I wanted to just add one thing: NEVER punish in any way when she finally does come to you. No yelling, or time out, just happiness, kisses and a treat. If you yell or something, she'll start to associate coming to you with bad things. Plus, terriers are known to love the chase:laugh: |
I could never take my boys off leash anywhere! I wish I could but they would be gone in a second! Ive just resigned myself to having to keep them on leash all the time when outside. I don't know about you but it seems they think they are indestructable (even to motorcycles haha - my boys go spastic over motorcycles and airplanes (in the sky)) haha also they get distracted by every litttle thing and then its like a frenzy and they dont even hear my commands. Id be VERY careful taking your baby off leash outside ever! Just in case!! :) |
COME WHEN CALLED To me this is the most valuable thing that we have learned in classes, Peanut doesn't have it to 100% yet... but we're working on it |

Demi's come command is not 100%, but her sit command is. If she won't come, I yell 'Sit!' and she'll stay put till I get to her and grab her. It's an alternative. That said, Demi is always on a leash when we're outside. |
^Good point... there are cetain things that certain dogs adhere to well, SIT, STAY, WAIT, etc... figure out whichever gets the best response from yours and use that until some more training/learning can be implemented... Shy away from running, yelling, and flailing... that generally means that "we're playing" or "I'm in trouble" either way, you don't get the response you want! |

I had another thought too. Although I too agree it's best to keep them on leash at all times.... in cases of emergencies, you have to have a plan. Earlier I told about running AWAY from Roxie once to get her to come back (she'd run nearly a block before I got her to return). But I also say "treat" nearly every time I give my pups one. It's not part of the command but part of the reward. So I've been able to get their attention by yelling "treat!" as well. Coby (6 months old) got out through the garage door just last night and started down the driveway. My husband started to chase him. I hollered "don't chase him!" and ran and got the treat tin. I shook the tin and yelled "treat!" (both sounds music to his ears) and he came right back!! Avoid problems (always on leash) but have an emergency plan!! |

what about a 'clicker'? start using it in the house/garden..everytime you 'click' give her a small treat...then start using it when shes out on the lead..'click & treat' and then progress to using it off the lead? i'm thinking of using one with Pixie. |
You need to teach the come and stay commands |
Cooooookkkiiiiiiiieeeee!!! Treat trick works well here too, but we say COOKIE...and she knows exactly what to do. MANNNN, if you shook a box of chocolate at me, I would certainly RUUNNNN towards you too! :D |

Two of my babies no problem will stay by my side and will come back if they wander too far when called, but Wizzar NO WAY!!!!!! We had him in the back of the car going to the vet ( he knows the way!!!!) we stopped to get petrol and i got out to pay. My husband opened the car and Wizzar bolted, across the road between a truck and a bus over a ditch and off into the fields. My husband gave chase but the more he ran the more Wizzar ran ( what a great game daddy!!!!) he eventually cornered him after he had found the biggest pile of cow poop and rolled in it. I still laugh when i think of the two of them running around this huge field, hubbie screaming at this small dog!!!!!! Very funny!!!! |
How horribly scarey...my heart would have dropped to the floor, bet it wasnt funny at the time. If you think about it....HE knew he was headed to the vet, so cant blame him for escaping...and what a treat for the vet...A COW POOP SMELLING YORKIE-That will teach him for checking his privates-"wanna check my privates...here smell this!"...:D Your poor husband, did he get a treat for his chase??????? Glad your story ended happy. |
When hubbie eventually got him he was mad but hugged Wizzar and gave him a chew stick because we rescued him. He had been beaten and left for the worst so we would never smack him!!! He got wrapped in a blanket and brought to the dog wash back at the petrol station!! He was exhausted when he got to the vet slept through his boosters!!! |
