Velcro harness! I almost lost her! I got this really really cute harness for lola its pink with bows glitter everything perfect for my lil girly girl... well I took her for a walk today as usual in the same route and there was this big big dog... so we went the other way .. well lola loves big dogs! so she ran after him and I pulled her back and from the harness being velcro it came right off and she went after the dog... the dog starting going crazy the owner was yelling at me her dog almost ate my baby.... I was so scared the lady was so mad I felt so bad.. Im never buying a velcro harness again I dont care how pretty it is please BE CAREFUL if u have one! |
Wow What a scare!! It's wise to becareful with any harness you get. No harness is fail proof you must always check and recheck. There is always the possibility our babies can get out of any harness. I have never had a problem with the velcro harnesses but i have had problems with a few other harnesses before and it is very scary. I'm glad your baby is ok. This is a good reminder to always recheck your harnesses of any type. |
Oh my gosh! Kelly! I am so sorry girl!! I am so glad that you got little Lola back in time and thank you so much for posting this! This is something that I have actually worried about...it has crossed my mind more than once. Thank goodness Tatum is so small so I don't *think* she could pull hard enough to the velcro to snap, but you NEVER know. However, Stedman will do exactly as Lola did and pull and tug on the leash if he sees another dog (he FREAKS out and barks like crazy trying to get to them) - so I really have to watch him. BUT - ever since I bought one of the Silk Harnesses from Cindy (chattiesmom) which is NOT velcro...I have been walking him with that. I need to get my order in for Tate's! We just LOVE these harnesses! I do feel MUCH more secure when walking them with a harness that DOESN'T have velcro. Big hugs to little Lola and I am so sorry that you guys had such a big scare! :( |

Did the velcro let loose at the tummy, or was it the neck? I ask because I have always used velcro harnesses and the only time I had a problem is once when I didn't have the neck velcro'd correctly and she slipped right out of it with the neck open. Other than that, I've never had velcro come undone. Maddie is a puller, and my daughter's dog pulls even more, and they've always stayed secure. Maybe this vest was made with some cheap velcro or not the heavy duty. I once made a dress for a 30 pound dog that was a puller and it stayed secure when they walked her. I'm so glad your little Lola is safe and unharmed! *HUG* |

P.S. - I swear I am going to get back to you about that e-mail girl, lol. It has been hectic around here lately, and I needed my YT fix - so I decided to jump on and browse for a little while, lol :p |

Chattiesmom even sends you a little bag of extra crystals in case one falls off - and also a little bag of treats!!! |
How scary for you guys! I've never had an issue with any of the harnesses I've made, but I make sure when we go out I securely velcro both sides right on top of each other and press down firmly just in case. You must have been so worried! I once had a regular harness with the buckles from petsmart BREAK on me during a walk. So, I know how terrifying that can be :( |
I use nothing but velcro harness and clothing. Rocco is very strong and I have never had that problem. Maybe it wasn't a good quality velcro, or like Connie mentioned ..not fastened good. Anyways, glad she wasn't hurt. |

And LOL...I'm sure Steddy wouldn't mind the crystals - I think his daddy would though LOLOL :p However he doesn't have a choice with Tatum - SHE'S GETTIN' 'EM! :p |
How very scary! It is very important to have good quality velcro. I have seen some at Petsmart that were so cheap and hardly held...always make sure the velcro is good stuff and secured completely together. |
Wow - I bet that was scary. When Lacy was still a puppy I bought her the prettiest stepin harness and leash set from a dog boutique in Dallas. She is a major puller though and stretched it out so it became too easy for her to get out of. And then one time the leash actually broke! It really is scary chasing after them like that. Now she has a leather stepin harness and leash set the I got from GlamourDog. I've used it for a year with no problems at all - it's VERY secure and being leather doesn't stretch at all. So far as the velcro - I've made a few dresses for Lacy before (I have to be in the mood to do it so it doesn't happen too often LOL) and have always used the thinner velcro on the ones I've made. This thinner velcro is okay for clothes but I would never trust it for a harness - it just wouldn't hold well. I have bought dresses from ChloeBella and from another dress maker at a dog show and they use thick, heavy duty velcro that really holds together really well - I don't think I'd have a problem walking her in a harness made with velcro like that. Did the harness you used have the thinner velcro? |
I have been thinking about getting velcro harness...was ready to order last week and then had changed my mind. That is one of my biggest concerns. May look into getting the attachables. I forgot who had them on their site. Attachable dress to the harness so my babies can look all pretty. Thanks for sharing. You have def. made me make up my mind. I am just overly cautious. I would be freaked. My babies run so fast and don't listen to us all the time. |
I've NEVER had on issue with the following companies: You can go to their websties right off my site - I believe in these companies so much I gave them their own page - http://www.designsbyvillette.com/Links.html (shana - Tinkerbells Closet) (Jodie's Harness Dress (SissyAngelWear) (Jodi ChloeBella) & Missy (LilBabyAttire) I'vehave never once hard a problem - actually they're hard to pull apart when removing then as long as there's a nice wide band ...this shouldn't happen unless it's human error |
I doubt that you would have problems with most of the velcro harnesses made by YTers. But I have seen some really flimsy ones at PetsMart that had barely an inch square of velcro to hold it together. They were really cute harnesses, but I don't think those would hold very well. I really like the step in harnesses also, but I did have a dachshund that could even pull out of them, somehow she would pull backwards and get it over her head if it wasn't on pretty tight and I wasn't watching her closely. So whatever harness you use, just be sure it is securely fastened and fitting pretty snug! So sorry about what happened to your baby. I am glad she wasn't hurt, though I am sure you were both very traumatized by it. I know I would be! Hugs, |
I'm so glad she didn't get hurt. Would you prefer one with buckles on it? I'm trying to make some clothes, and am deciding which is better? . |
I use velcro harnesses and harness dresses all the time and have never had that happen. Sorry it happened to yoou |
wow what a scare! I ordered Lucy two of Cindy's (Chattiesmom) silk harnesses, one in irridescent light pink and the other in teal. Lucy's been sporting the teal since she chewed through her pink one, when daddy wasn't watching her :p but I sent it back to Cindy's harness hospital so it could be fixed :) I must say I absolutely love these harnesses, I don't worry that Lucy is going to hurt her trachea or that she will be able to get away from me, such a wonderful feeling. |
This is why its important for me to have peace of mind knowing I trained them to heel correctly, sit when we stop and come when they are called. I know the harnesses made here are made by people who can actually test the products on a daily basis and have made them to with stand tests like this. Even a flimsy petco harness would stand up to the test if your baby is trained properly IMO. |
I'm so glad your baby is OK. Princess & Katie have lots of very pretty harness dresses. They wear them all the time. I really think the key is a good fit. The velcro they use at the stores isn't always as strong as having a custom made dress. Again, I'm so glad she's OK. :ghug: |
I thought that could happen with velcro, so I won't let Ellie wear those kind. Thanks for posting. I guess I'm not crazy.:) |
thank u everyone for the hugs :) im just so glad she is ok... I got the harness from petsmart of all places!!!! ugh im so mad... I thought it was a good quality one it wasnt cheap... but I guess it wasnt... I know all velcro harnesses arnt bad tho! maybe ill post a picture of mine... lola ia a huge puller so that could have been the issue also im going to invest in a new sturdy one.. I just love the idea of having a vest one... Im gonna go check out the go fetch website! |
[I would prefer buckle... just to be extra safe :D QUOTE=Yorkiekids;1322215]I'm so glad she didn't get hurt. Would you prefer one with buckles on it? I'm trying to make some clothes, and am deciding which is better? .
|
[I would prefer buckle... just to be extra safe :D I just trust them more now. QUOTE=Yorkiekids;1322215]I'm so glad she didn't get hurt. Would you prefer one with buckles on it? I'm trying to make some clothes, and am deciding which is better? .
|
When I make a Harness vest I use the extra strength industrial type. I have never had it pull off but the thought does cross my mind. Glad your baby is ok! |
I am so glad your baby is o.k. The same thing happened to mr last week. We have a man that rides a golf cart to walk his dog, and Sawyer just jerked so fast, it came loose. Another thing I hate is it sometimes catches some of his hair, he hates it. I guess I need to talk to someone about the silk ones. Have a great day;) |
I know you must have been terrified. I'm so very glad she wasn't hurt. |
I use the Buddy Belt and I really love it for Lucy. Regarding Velcro, I am not a fan to begin with but I bought some dresses from ChloeBella with the D ring and I have to say the grade/quality of the velcro is better than I've ever seen. I'm comfortable letting Lucy wear them and I'm a cautious mommy :) I'm so glad your baby is okay! |
