although I agree with you that it can be annoying and the parents obviously didnt care to step in however you are bringing your dog to public places and should prepare yourself for these situations. I hear alot of complaints and most are valid however kid+puppy=infant bliss

I do know that taking my dog places will cause certain attention. I'm used to and don't mind people looking at us or saying, "oh, that's a cute dog!" or asking a few questions about her. I also don't mind well behaved, calm children coming up to us and politely asking if they can pet her. The children running around unattended would have bothered me even if I didn't have my dog. It just made it worse that I was holding a dog and they kept running up to me and saying "puppy puppy". If my dog didn't behave I wouldn't take her places - she is very quiet and still when we go places, and while I was trying on clothes,she just sat quietly on the bench and didn't even move. If I had kids that just couldn't behave - they also would not be going anywhere with me. I really think if I had kids (which I probably won't) they would be under my control at all times. I just wish more people would make their children behave. I know not everyone likes dogs, but not everyone likes children either..especially those running around like that

Well regardless if the children are "well behaved" in your eyes or not, you can't just leave the children at home like you CAN leave a dog at home.

I agree people do need to teach there children respect and how to behave but some kids do not get to be around cute little pups or even get to see any, and probably do get excited to see one. It just doesn't sound right for you to say "not everyone likes children either", I mean you had your dog at a clothing store I assume... not a pet store.
Not to sound rude but it irritates me to hear children called brats just because they get really excited to see precious pups and such but maybe because I am a MOM.

Parents don't make their kids mind anymore. We'll all pay for it one way or another.

This is exactly why me and the wife are likely not having children -- just 2 or 3 dogs.

I so agree. Some do a wonderful job and I think the excitement these children had came from the fact you rarely see a dog uncrated in a store.

My Crystal absolutely loves it when children come up to her and she doesn't care if they ask to pet her. I usually tell them this yorkie likes your attention but you should always ask the owner if you can.

btw Sean most of us are very welcoming here. It took me awhile to get the ropes here too .....many yrs ago:)

I put Conner in his stroller when we go into stores. That way he is away from stickey fingers and My hands are free to shop.

What a good idea!! I've seen these mentioned on yorkie talk and I bet they help alot. We have many problems here with this issue so very few allow our dogs in the stores. In a way I can see their point because they can't take the time to temperament test each one. LOL

Just to make sure that we don't "generalize" too much, if I could get my FURKIDS to behave as well as my SKINKIDS have ALWAYS behaved (they are 18 and 21 now), I wouldn't need any puppy training or obediance training. :D Not all kids are bad, and not all parents are bad. Some just give us a bad rap.

You can't leave a child at home unattended but you can find a babysitter. I was not in just any clothing store - I was in a store meant for ADULTS. It was a Career Apparel store (ie scrubs for doctors and nurses). I wouldn't take my dog into Toys R Us or Baby Gap and I usually don't expect to see a lot of children in the adult clothing stores I shop at. Well behaved children do not bother me, but it seems like most children are so unbehaved these days. I wish more parents would be responsible and make their children behave. I'll see kids running around, screaming, throwing fits, etc, and I've asked my mom a few times if I ever acted like that and she said no not really. They said if I ever did start throwing a fit, they immediately took me out of the restaurant or store. It's very unfair to subject others to a kid's screaming and missbehaving. Those of you that do teach your kids good manners and make them behave, Thank you! You're great parents!!

I'll take that. You're welcome!!

You are on the right track. Although it's very hard to remember at the time (said from experience), try not to get so annoyed with the kids. You obviously understand that mis-behaving children is the result of either bad parenting, negligent parenting, plain ol' overwhelmed parents, or physiological issues with the children. So try to be patient with the kids.....
