I like the Johnson's No More Tangles and use a metal comb that has narrow teeth on one end and wide teeth on the other end. I use the wide teeth to comb out any tangles and hold the hair by the roots so it doesn't pull. I have found mine doesn't mind the comb nearly as much as the brush. |
I bath them once a week, use a good quality conditioner and I generally brush them 3 times a day. Thss tends to keep the knots away, apart from in my soft coated boy, for him I use shaws tangle remover. |
I use cowboy magic mixed with another conditioner and water. I usually spray the mixture on the mat and let it set for a short bit before carefully separating the mat. Brushing every day also helps keep mats away. Rub Cowboy Magic into the matt and then with either a knitting needle or a sturdy chopstick, gently spread the matt out and then with a slicker brush start with the ends and work your way up on the knot. A good conditioner and brushing each day will keep the matts out. |

When I first got Mazie she was FULL of mats. I used baby oil on them, and I've never read on here about that being bad for them, although I don't know for sure. I wouldn't use it regularly, but for the occasional knot I still put on a few drops, and mostly work at the mat with my fingers, separating the hairs that start coming lose at the edges of the mat. I also find that using a COMB rather than a brush does a much better job at keeping the mats away. Like others have suggested, hold the mat so that you're not tugging on the roots, and start combing it out from the ENDS of the hair, working toward the root. good luck! |
I've been very lucky for mine not to get mats, but I brush and comb them every day, sometimes twice. I do start at the bottom of their coat and work up and I think that helps a lot. |
