Any tips on de-tangling? Does anyone have tips on how to detangle thier coat? Buster HAAAAATES being brushed, it is always a struggle. I noticed today that on his side he has a few knots. Any tips on how to get them out without hurting him? Thanks :) |
I use Cowboy magic and work it into the knot if I run across one. |
Oh the fun..... 3 Attachment(s) i spray a bit of johnsons detangler on my smallest guy, his enemy is any brush/comb. If i leave them down he marks them straight away!! I give him a doggy massage before and after grooming to relax him !! |
I too use Cowboy Magic and Bruce has a somewhat cotton coat, but it makes even him look like pure silk...Until he messes himself up 20 minutes later. |
I guess I'll try the cowboy magic. Sounds like it works well. |
I use a the detangling solution made by Biolage. It is for people and I always avoid their face and eyes, but this stuff does wonders......... and it isn't a harsh conditioner. It really helps on Shelby & Seymours long coats. We also use Ice On Ice for in between bathes. |
where do you get cowboy magic |
Use some cornstarch and rub it in. Then start at the bottom and work up.. |
I bought Cowboy Magic at our Tractor Supply store. I think Southern States feed store would have it. It is sold where horse produsts are sold. |
I like the johnson and johnson's detangler...it works wonders, is CHEAP, and smells really good  |
I also use cowboy magic, I also get mine from the feed store, but jeffers web site has it too.. on horses we use WD40 for the bad mats it works great just a little bit. |

Great tips! Thanks so much...I thought I was the only one with this little problem :) |
I use cowboy magic too and make sure I use a good conditioner when gets a bath. I also brush him when he's good and tired. |
use a really good leave in conditioner and take your time detangling so there is less pain. Take a small section at a time. Hold the hair by the root to avoid too much pulling. |
I like the Johnson's No More Tangles and use a metal comb that has narrow teeth on one end and wide teeth on the other end. I use the wide teeth to comb out any tangles and hold the hair by the roots so it doesn't pull. I have found mine doesn't mind the comb nearly as much as the brush. |
I bath them once a week, use a good quality conditioner and I generally brush them 3 times a day. Thss tends to keep the knots away, apart from in my soft coated boy, for him I use shaws tangle remover. |
I use cowboy magic mixed with another conditioner and water. I usually spray the mixture on the mat and let it set for a short bit before carefully separating the mat. Brushing every day also helps keep mats away. I also found the website below to have a better price even with shipping for the cowboy magic rather than my local feedstore. http://www.animalworldnetwork.com/cowmagdetand.html |
Rub Cowboy Magic into the matt and then with either a knitting needle or a sturdy chopstick, gently spread the matt out and then with a slicker brush start with the ends and work your way up on the knot. A good conditioner and brushing each day will keep the matts out. |
Try Buddy Splash Buddy Splash from Cloud Star is amazing at detangling - it has natural oils & herbs. It smells fantastic - it's great for between baths to freshen the dogs too. If you can't find it locally - you can order it at www.cloudstar.com I've used it for a couple of years & recommended it to others on YT who have reported they also liked the product |
When I first got Mazie she was FULL of mats. I used baby oil on them, and I've never read on here about that being bad for them, although I don't know for sure. I wouldn't use it regularly, but for the occasional knot I still put on a few drops, and mostly work at the mat with my fingers, separating the hairs that start coming lose at the edges of the mat. I also find that using a COMB rather than a brush does a much better job at keeping the mats away. Like others have suggested, hold the mat so that you're not tugging on the roots, and start combing it out from the ENDS of the hair, working toward the root. good luck! |
I've been very lucky for mine not to get mats, but I brush and comb them every day, sometimes twice. I do start at the bottom of their coat and work up and I think that helps a lot. |
You can buy Cowboy Magic anywhere you buy horse supplies. I found mine at Petsmart! |
