I'm so glad I looked at your thread again and got the correct date! I just got off the phone with my Mom and told her I was coming to her house to watch it. I can't pick up that channel but she can. I've never seen the show but have heard quite a lot about it. Thanks for posting this!!!:)

Nor do I, in fact I can't stand him. I have studied dog psychology and have helped to rehabilitated abused, fearful and agressive rescue dogs. I have never needed to use any 'dominance' training techniques like the 'alpha roll' and I have never ever hit or hurt a dog. Just patience, positive reinforcement, understanding, a mutual respect and lots of love. Again though, this is just my opinion.

She was "uncomfortable" because she was afraid her vicious dog was going to bite him.

No matter what the situation if a trainer you asked for help grabbed your dog by the back of their neck like that, would you be okay with that? I would be happy if one of my babies bit him after he "handled" them like that! :thumbdown But to each his own, I just don't like it...

Also, the dogs calmed down only because they were afraid of HIM- IMO

Ow my, i've never watched it before but I certainly don't believe in handling them rough. I'm going to watch it because I've never seen it but I'm probably to wimpy to use his technic.

Look at the link on the first page of this post

I Love Ceasar. I know some people think he's rough but animal mothers do carry their babies by the scruff so I would imagine it doesn't hurt if done correctly and not out of anger or attempting to be cruel. His ways just make a lot more sense to me than just saying words a dog doesn't understand and using treats which they ignore when they aren't hungry.

I will definitely be watching tomorrow!!

I like cesar most of the time, he isn't always handling the dogs that way, but if you are interested in another kind of trainer, there is a show with a british woman called "its me or the dog", she does the same kind of thing with going into peoples houses but I've never seen her grab a dog like cesar sometimes does. I think she's on animal planet, but I'm not sure.

You have to remember though that young puppies have alot of loose skin to grow into so when their mothers pick them up it does not hurt however ceaser is doing it to adult dogs who do not have that loose skin, so therefore it does hurt them. Furthermore mothers do it when they need to move their babies, and they are very very gentle. However ceasar is doing it as a punishment and he could really mess the dogs up phsycologically, especially if they should ever become mothers.

Another thing along the same lines is that he tries to make people believe that the alpha roll works because and is acceptable because the alpha dog will do it in a wolf pack, this is incorrect. This theory is from a study of one wolf pack in the 1940's however furthur studies of many wolf packs all over the world concluded that actually dogs voluntarally roll over onto their backs in submission but they are never forced to do it.

This is also like the theory that the 'alpha' dog eats first, when actually if you study wolf and dog packs you will see that the adolesent dogs (those that would be seen as at the bottom) are allowed to have first pick of the food.

I just discovered this show and absolutely love it and amazed at what Cesar can do! I ordered his book and should have it by this weekend. Thanks for letting me know about it. I will write it down on my calendar so I don't forget.

Cesar doesn't "hurt" the dogs. As a matter of fact, in his book he says we should never hit or yell at a dog. I have to totally disagree with your assessment of Cesar and his techniques.

puppy_Love08 08-17-2007 02:50 AM

After reading all the posts in this thread, I see that this conversation resembles one regarding the discipline of children. As Cesar points out, those who scoff at his methods (which do not hurt the dog) are probably the ones who have the most unruly dogs (and those parents who balk at disciplining their children usually have out-of-control children). From my own research and experience, I can say that Cesar is right on target. If you see him interact with his pack, he obviously has their love and respect....and it's not because they "fear" him.

When dogs struggle against Cesar (such as when he grabbed the Bishon Frise by the scruff or held the larger dog by his collar), they hurt themselves. If I restrained my child from doing something harmful, and he struggled and hurt himself in the process, HE did it - not me. Same thing here.
