Sad Update on GA Mommy I want to thank everyone that has responded to help me with my "delivery" ordeal and I wanted to give you an update. I had taken my little baby to the vet and they said she was three weeks out and had 2 pups. Well, I was not happy with that vet, so I went back to my old vet who is really great, but is farther away. He spent lots of time talking to me and explaining things and we scheduled a c-section because he said her pelvis was too small for these pups. The c-Section was scheduled for Wed. June 15 and I got there bright and early. Abbey was doing fine, although you could tell she was really uncomfortable for a few days. I could feel the pups moving around and Wednesday did not come a moment too soon!! So, I gave her a kiss and said we would be coming home with her babies in a few hours. Well, the vet calls me around 11am to say that he had bad news for me....her uterus had ruptured - recently, maybe sometime that night or the morning - and one of the pups had slipped partly into her abdomen. That pup was dead (but still soft, so it had JUST happened) and then the other pup was born, but was not formed properly and also died shorlty after that. The worst part was that Abbey was not awake and the vet was not sure how she would come out of all this because she had been through so much. I have no idea how this happened...I was watching her VERY closely and she showed NO SIGNS of pain or labor or anything...no nesting, no pacing, no licking, no pushing, no temperature drop....how did I miss that? Or maybe it happened on the way to the vet. Anyway, I spent the whole day Wednesday in tears. The vet said she would have to stay overnight at his office, but I said NO- Not unless YOU will be staying WITH her - she WILL NOT be left alone tonight. He finally agreed and let me bring her home. She slept the whole night and when I did let her get up and stand up, she was so wobbly and weak...made me cry again. But she is doing better and better....she just has big milk bags now and I am putting cold gel paks on her and she likes that a lot. She is on an antibiotic and a pain killer, but she is eating good and her poopy is normal (that's important). The vet takes my calls (about her temp, diet and medicine) ANY time I call, and I am so glad Iwent back to him. I try not to call much, but they are all so sweet (the mean lady that ran me off has since left). I have no puppies now, and she still thinks she has them - she licks my hand and arm for HOURS and she insists on being under the covers and is very protective when her brothers come around, so I think she has a false mommy-hood for now. But that is ok - we can deal with that better than losing her!!! But thanks again for all of your kind words and help through all of this! When things get back to normal, I will try to put some photos on and get back in touch with everyone, but until then... My goal in life is to be as good of a person my dog already thinks I am. :aimeeyork |
I am very sorry for you and for your "baby"...this is so sad |

I'm so sorry about the puppies, but thank goodness your little girl is okay. I'm so glad that you have a vet that you can trust and count on. |

I am soooo sorry for your loss and Abbey's! Just thankful that she is going to be OK. Poor baby ... we will keep you all in our prayers. Please update us as you can, I know you must have your hands full! |
Oh is that sad....my prayers to your brave little mommie and rest in peace to your little babies...That's really heartbreaking and scary. I hope she gets stronger every day - What a hard experience for all of you... |

I am so sorry for th loss of your puppies. I hope everything will get back to normal for you and your girl soon. |
Im so sorry to hear about what happened. Im glad abbey is ok and hope she continues to get better. Macy sends puppy kisses to her :animal-sm |
sad news I am truly sad for you also. Try giving her a small teddy bear to snuggle. I had a female with a ruptured uterus years ago and lost all 4 pups. She went from 8 pounds to 4 pounds in 4 days..vet sent Pammie home to die. I was so new at breeding I was afraid to bring her home...but she perked up at home and got well fast. She went into my closet, got a pair of slippers, put them in her bed and treated them like pups...it broke my heart. I bought two small teddy bears and gave them to her and she seemed happy. I do hope ypur little girl gets well fast...best wishes |
I am very very sorry for ur loss...but i am glad that the mommy is ok. Give her a big kiss from me and Dolce and please know that those 2 little ones are in our prayers... |
awwww how sad I am so very sorry for you, but thrilled your mommie is doing so well, thank god for that! |
I'm so sorry to hear of your baby's loss and discomfort. She is very lucky to have you as her Mama. I wish both of you a speedy recovery. |
I am so sorry for both of you, and I hope she gets well soon. |
what an ordeal! I hope she (and you) contunue to feel better. hugs from all of us here. |
This is a heartbreaking story! I started crying while reading it! Especially because she still thinks she has the puppies, bless her little heart! That's so sad but I am glad that she got through it okay and I wish all of you best of luck on her road to recovery. |
I am so sorry to hear of the loss of those babies. And, poor mom doesn't understand and her hooman mommie is sad and her hormones just took a nosedie. She is gonna be confused and sad so you try to be less sad, okay? And, Pat's suggestion is a good one. Her breasts will go down and she will stop producing milk. Did your vet say to reduce her fluid intake and food for 24 hours to help stop milk production? It is so hard to watch our mommies suffer...makes me wish they could tell us how they feel... |
I am so sorry to hear about this terrible news. I am just happy that Abbey will be allright, just give her lots of loving and in time she will be ok... |
I am so sorry for the loss of your puppies. I do so hope Abbey recuperates okay and soon. I'm sure you did NOTHING wrong. These little dogs - they are so brave and they can't talk so how on earth do we know as well as we do when something's "not right". You are a good Mommy. |
I am so sorry to hear your girl went through so much, I will keep you both in my prayers, and hope she is feeling better really soon. Giving her a little teddy bear to cuddle sounds like a great idea, that might keep her comforted. Please keep us posted on her. My heart goes out to you both. |
I am truly sorry about the pups.. I'm really glad Abbey was at the vet tho.. because you could have lost her too. I had one that had a ruptured uterus and had to stay at the hospital for two nights.. I was so glad to get her home... she had lost so much weight I didn't see how she could recover but with our love and care she is a very healthy 'fat' little girl now.. I'm sure Abbey will be too before you know it. Give her an extra hug from your Ga. friends. |
I am so sorry to hear about the puppies, thank goodness your girl is OK and has you to take care of her!! |
I am so sorry to hear about mommy and babies. I too will pray for her recovery. Prissy and Pat: Do these pets recover enough to breed again or it that it for them? They lose their babies and no more? I hope this doesn't sound wrong, I am thinking of the future of my babies. I like to know as much as possible and be as prepared as I can for the things you are never prepared for. |
This is such a sad case. Who would have thought that something like this would happen? I'm so sorry for your loss and for the mommy. |
I'm so happy mommy is doing well, losing babies is hard enough. Your whole family is in our thoughts and prayers. Windy and Lida Rose |

I've never had experience with breeding them after things like this... I've had one that had to have a c-section and its my policy that if that happens they are automaticaly spayed at the same time.. The one I have that had a ruptured uterus had a normal delivery but had to have an emergency spay afterwards. I personally would not even consider trying to breed one again if they have any problems. |
How very sad and disappointing for you and your lil girl. I am relieved that you did not loose her as well. I don't blame you at all for wanting to bring her home from the vet. I know a woman that this happened to. No could predict what happened to her either. I hope your lil miss will be back to her old self soon. |
breeding For me it depends on the reason for the section. I have bred many after a section to have them free whelp with no future problems. Sometimes you can see the reason for the dystocia (whelping complication)..one large pup, uterine inertia, two stuck in the birth canal at the same time...I have had these things occur and when rebred they did not repeat and free whelped. Dogs recover well and a proper rest period is needed. A ruptured uterus is not another story..spaying is done and that is that. |
