Hi Im new! Hi, my name is Kellly and we are going to pick up our Yorkie tonight.....he is 7 weeks old and weighs about 2 pounds right now. I found this site because I am also questioning the ear thing, whether I should be concerned that they are not standing up right now. He is one of 3 in the litter and his brother's ears are standing completely erect now, should I do the tape thing with his or wait it out? Just curious, we are so excited, especially my 12 year old! She can hardly wait! I look forward to talking to you all on here!:animal-pa |
Welcome! :D He's really young, be sure to watch for signs of hypoglycemia, because its sooo common in yorkies that leave their mommies too soon. Don't worry about the ears standing just yet. Most yorkies don't even have one standing yet at this age. Just make sure they're shaved. I can't wait to see pictures of your new baby! |
7 weeks is a little young IMO, and the ear vary from dog to dog, it genetics I beleive. If they stand up they stand if they dont they dont. I would not bother tapering them unless you just want your yorkie to look a certain way but why bother. |
Hi, kelly welcome to yorkie talk you will love it here,my babies ears just came up on there on,have you picked out a name yet? we love pictures here. Donna |
welcome to YT. if you keep clipping the hair on the ears ,they should stand on their own. do you have any other dogs at your house to help in the socialization of your young puppy? |

Hi & welcome to yt, IMO means , In MY Opinion:) Congrats on your new baby |
Welcome Kelly. My breeder clipped around the ears around 8 weeks and then I did at 12 weeks when we got him. They have stayed up since. He is 15 weeks. Enjoy your baby! |
Welcome to YT, Kelly!!! Congratulations on your new baby. He is really young, so you will need to be a little more diligent on watching for signs of hypoglycemia. It is up to you on the ears. Many will stand in time on their own, particularly if you keep them shaved. I think they look cute with floppy ears too!!! Good luck to you and can't wait to see photos!!! |
Well.....7 weeks is young I suppose but the breeder is letting him go, also she is giving me a vitamin supplement in case the hypoglycemia does occur as we discussed it yesterday when we went to see him. Im very new to this which is why I joined this forum. We had a Miniature Schnauzer that kept getting loose and we live on 5 acres of land down a dirt road, but my younger son kept chasing him and it terrified me to death to think of either of them getting hit by a car so we gave him to my niece who had a fenced in yard. As soon as I get pictures of him tonight I will post them, as for his name.....silly but we are thinking Peanut.....Butter lol.......hes so small right now, his mom and dad are both around 4-5 pounds and about the ears, theirs stand straight up, and it doesnt matter, I was just curious about it. We never had our Schnauzers ears cropped as we liked the "floppy" look! So great to hear from you all!!! Im gonna love it here!! Kelly:animal-pa |
Ok, can some of you expert owners hee hee!! please give me the warning signs and while I wait, Im gonna research on my own as well but I would like to hear from those of you who already have Yorkies! Thanks! |
Welcome to YT, you've come to the right place. I wish your breeder was on YT - because if she was she would probably know not to take the puppies away from their momma so soon. Puppies not only need their mom, but they need their litter mates for socialization. Puppies that stay with their birth families until at least 10-12 weeks do so much better in the long run. Many breeders want to keep them even longer than this. Best wishes for your new family member. Look forward to seeing pictures. :aimeeyork :) yorkiesmiles & :aimeeyork Bubba & :aimeeyork Roxie |
Ok, so now Im really worried lol.......just dont know what to do?!? |
Maybe you could ask the breeder about keeping the puppy a bit longer. Have you spoken with your vet about bringing home a puppy this young? While I no longer breed, when I first started, I thought the perfect age to let the pups go was 8 weeks because thats the age I always saw people advertising pups at. But my vet helped set me straight on the importance of the puppy staying in my care & with the mom & litter mates. (I've never breed yorkies, only Bichon Frises & Siamese cats.) Some people think as soon as the mom has weaned the babies its time to let the puppies go to new homes, this just isn't the case. If you haven't put down a deposit, maybe you could offer that to the breeder & ask her to hold the pup for at least 3 more weeks. Does the breeder have a contract? Does she offer a health guarantee? You will find a lot of good information about purchasing a health pup and finding a reputable breeder here. You might want to check in the breeder section. There are people who have brought 7 week old puppies home and have made it work. Hopefully, others can offer you more info. |
Welcome and congratulations. You will love your little one!!! If you do bring him home at 7 weeks, it is best if someone is home with the puppy most of the time. Watch for any signs of hypoglycemia... lethargic, falling over, seizures and get Nutrical in to him and get him to the vet. One way to help prevent it is to make sure he is eating something every 4-5 hours at first and not getting overly stressed by handling too much or playing too hard. They are a joy to own but one has to be very careful with them. It sounds like you are doing a good job of researching before hand!!! |
Hey..Welcome to YT.. Good luck with your baby.. 7weeks is a little young..I think is best to take the little ones away later..like 10 to 12 weeks..you will have to really watch this baby and keep nutra cal on hand.. It will cry for several days :( |
Welcome! Hi and welcome to YT! Your new pup seems a nice size for being 7 weeks old. It's usually the tinier ones that you really have to be on top of regarding hypoglycemia (although any pup can experience it). I wouldn't worry about the ears at this point... some take a few months for the ears to stand on their own.... Best of luck with your new pup! |
I just wanted to say thanks to all of you who replied to my posts! You all have been very helpful, Im going to talk with her tonight about my concerns. Someone will be with him at all times here, whether it be me, my husband or my daughter, so he will not be alone that is for sure. Ive been looking online about the issues that I do have so I have educated myself! Oh and the Nutra Cal that you all have spoken about, does that HAVE to be purchased at my Vet, or can you get it at Pet Smart or some place such as this? Thanks again for all the help! |
They have it at 1800petmeds.com. I think you can use Karo syrup in an emergency. An expert can tell you better than I. My breeder gave me Nutrical when I picked up Kalina at 12 weeks but I never had to use it. The very first sign is staring off into space. The symptoms get worse after that; falling over, seizures, total non-responsiveness at it's worse and that's when you need emergency treatment and IVs at the Vets. Good luck with your puppy. :) |

Congratulations and welcome! There is a lot of good information on this site! I have not gotten my boy yet, but I have been doing a lot of research and when I have asked a question everyone has been so nice! Good luck with your new puppy! |
Welcome to YT!!!! :) |
Welcome:)! Can't wait to see pics:)! |
My pup has sufferred exhaustion a few times...hard to tell him to rest...but we do our best. His blood sugar did get a bit low once too....the nutrical didnt fix it...he ws shaking and lethagic...so scary and sad( vet said it wsnt his blood sugar level that was causing it). Doc gave him dextrose and enough calories to get him through a day since he quit eating.vet told us to stay up with him thru the night to keep stirring him to keep him "going" I cooked up all his favorites and he came around two days later. Also aside from safe socialization...they really need to stay away from areas that other animals can cross (outdoors)until they build up their immune system and also have alltheir shots....I was told 16 weeks. anyone feel free to correct me..but this is the info I was getting. MIne was in a nursery with littermates until 12 weeks. Now indoor activities for 1 more week. I hope this help[s along withyour slef education. see ya 'round! |
:aimeeyork WELCOME TO YT :aimeeyork You will like it on here - cant wait to see pics of the little Peanut !!! :) |
Hello! Luigi:animal-pa & I just wanted to welcome you to YT! Good luck with your new puppy! I agree 7wks is a little young to take away from mommy, but I hope your breeder will be considerate to your concerns. It's great that you're doing your homework so you can take the best care of your new furbaby  They are really amazing little doggies, definitely hard work at times, but I think you'll have so much fun ;) Please keep us updated! |
Welcome! :) :) 7 weeks is very young, I'd be very, very careful - if it were me, I would not take a yorkie this young; it heightens the risk factor of heartbreak considerably. But, if you are going to take him do/get the following: Nutrical (petsmart) Stuffed dog size of mom-dog (for comfort) Pedialyte (in case of dehydration) Vet's emerg. # Feed him at least every 3-4 hours and make sure he's left to sleep quite a bit as well, they really need their sleep at this age and throughout puppyhood. He may not just eat dry kibble every 3-4, so you'll need to either get a high quality canned food, or home cook. We're here to help, so just reach out if you need anything! Congrats on your new pup, you will soon be in LURVE! Ann |
welcome to Yt, I cannot wait to see pics of your new baby ... |
