Welcome and congratulations. You will love your little one!!! If you do bring him home at 7 weeks, it is best if someone is home with the puppy most of the time. Watch for any signs of hypoglycemia... lethargic, falling over, seizures and get Nutrical in to him and get him to the vet. One way to help prevent it is to make sure he is eating something every 4-5 hours at first and not getting overly stressed by handling too much or playing too hard. They are a joy to own but one has to be very careful with them. It sounds like you are doing a good job of researching before hand!!! |
Hey..Welcome to YT.. Good luck with your baby.. 7weeks is a little young..I think is best to take the little ones away later..like 10 to 12 weeks..you will have to really watch this baby and keep nutra cal on hand.. It will cry for several days :( |
Welcome! Hi and welcome to YT! Your new pup seems a nice size for being 7 weeks old. It's usually the tinier ones that you really have to be on top of regarding hypoglycemia (although any pup can experience it). I wouldn't worry about the ears at this point... some take a few months for the ears to stand on their own.... Best of luck with your new pup! |
I just wanted to say thanks to all of you who replied to my posts! You all have been very helpful, Im going to talk with her tonight about my concerns. Someone will be with him at all times here, whether it be me, my husband or my daughter, so he will not be alone that is for sure. Ive been looking online about the issues that I do have so I have educated myself! Oh and the Nutra Cal that you all have spoken about, does that HAVE to be purchased at my Vet, or can you get it at Pet Smart or some place such as this? Thanks again for all the help! |
They have it at 1800petmeds.com. I think you can use Karo syrup in an emergency. An expert can tell you better than I. My breeder gave me Nutrical when I picked up Kalina at 12 weeks but I never had to use it. The very first sign is staring off into space. The symptoms get worse after that; falling over, seizures, total non-responsiveness at it's worse and that's when you need emergency treatment and IVs at the Vets. Good luck with your puppy. :) |

My pup has sufferred exhaustion a few times...hard to tell him to rest...but we do our best. His blood sugar did get a bit low once too....the nutrical didnt fix it...he ws shaking and lethagic...so scary and sad( vet said it wsnt his blood sugar level that was causing it). Doc gave him dextrose and enough calories to get him through a day since he quit eating.vet told us to stay up with him thru the night to keep stirring him to keep him "going" I cooked up all his favorites and he came around two days later. Also aside from safe socialization...they really need to stay away from areas that other animals can cross (outdoors)until they build up their immune system and also have alltheir shots....I was told 16 weeks. anyone feel free to correct me..but this is the info I was getting. MIne was in a nursery with littermates until 12 weeks. Now indoor activities for 1 more week. I hope this help[s along withyour slef education. see ya 'round! |

I agree 7wks is a little young to take away from mommy, but I hope your breeder will be considerate to your concerns. It's great that you're doing your homework so you can take the best care of your new furbaby :rolleyes: They are really amazing little doggies, definitely hard work at times, but I think you'll have so much fun ;) Please keep us updated! |
Welcome! :) :) 7 weeks is very young, I'd be very, very careful - if it were me, I would not take a yorkie this young; it heightens the risk factor of heartbreak considerably. But, if you are going to take him do/get the following: Nutrical (petsmart) Stuffed dog size of mom-dog (for comfort) Pedialyte (in case of dehydration) Vet's emerg. # Feed him at least every 3-4 hours and make sure he's left to sleep quite a bit as well, they really need their sleep at this age and throughout puppyhood. He may not just eat dry kibble every 3-4, so you'll need to either get a high quality canned food, or home cook. We're here to help, so just reach out if you need anything!
