International Travel with Chloe?
 

So, I am considering taking Chloe to Asia next year. I MIGHT get married overseas next year and I want Chloe to be part of it. I want her to be there!!! But it is possible?? It will be a looooong flight. I even wonder if she is allowed to be the plane for that long?? Will she have problem coming back to US? Anyone out there has travel with their furbabies internationally? If so, do you mind share your experience with me? Where can I find more info about traveling with pet internationally? Thank you for all your help in advance!:D

Congratulations! Where will you be going in Asia? The requirements vary. You can get an idea of what you will need and quarantine laws by going to this site http://www.pettravel.com/passportnew.cfm and selecting the country you will be visiting in the drop down menu. If you contact the embassy of the country you're going to they should be able to tell you exactly what you need so there are no mistakes. To return to the U.S. she will probably need a current health certificate.

As for flying in-cabin that depends on which airline you will be using. United and Lufthansa are letting me take my fur baby to Italy in-cabin, but many airlines will not. If you happen to be flying through England your furbaby cannot go in-cabin with you due to England's strict rules. Contact the airline and they will be able to let you know if your baby can fly in-cabin with you and what size/type of carrier he or she will need. If they say yes make sure you reserve your baby's ticket right away as there is usually a 2 pet limit in-cabin for airlines. Good luck! :)

I don't know what they allow in terms of mid-flight feeding, watering, stretching (they should move a bit during that long of a flight). I flew recently w/ Marcel and I took his bag to the bathroom w/ me and took him out for a bit. I bet you could bring her in the bathroom for a little food/water/potty/love session.

I haven't yet I've just done the research and reserved his tickets for this December when we're going to Italy to visit my family. It will be his first time on a plane, but he usually travels well and just plays with his toy on my lap or sleeps. So hopefully he will behave on the plane too ;)

Technically, your baby is supposed to remain in his/her carrier during the entire flight. If you're lucky and get nice flight attendants they may let you take your baby out or pretend not to notice if you take your little one out to stretch or cuddle on your lap for a bit. The bathroom tip seems like something you may want to try and will probably be easier if your baby is pad trained :) If you have any breaks at airports you should take your baby to the bathroom as well and let her walk around a bit. Don't forget to take some nutri-cal with you.

Oh, I don't think Chloe will do well in the carrier esp if she sees me just sitting there!!! She will probably want to lay on my laps!!! Shoot! Chloe isn't pad trained since she does go outside and do her business out at the lawn most of the times. Do you think I should start pad train her now? She is 11 months old, is it too late? I bought her a pee pad once and she just destory it. Any tip on pee pad training?

i started mocha with pee pad training first (since i got her in november and it was cold out). i believe you can train them to do anything, no matter the age. it just takes a lot of time, patience, and persistance.

i went back to taiwan for a couple of weeks and i wanted to take her with me, until i read about the quarantine laws. the fact that they have to spend a couple of days in quarantine for health check-ups, shots, etc(and it can be expensive), made me rethink my decision about taking her. i left her with my boyfriend in Michigan.

Hmm maybe you can get one of the pet flys carriers (http://www.petflys.com/puppylove.html) so you can leave the side open for her and sneak in some petting. Does Chloe potty on command? If so maybe you can just put her on the pad and tell her to do her business...doubt she'll think of tearing it up after being on a plane for several hours holding it in lol

The flight was about 2.5-3 hours - it was his first flight (he's 8 mths old). On the way out, the first 40 mins were just awful bc he was pawing at the bag, struggling to get out, tried to start whining - I was going crazy. He finally settled.

On the flight home, I gave 1mL of children's Benadryl about 30mins before the flight and it made a WORLD of difference. I think it was much easier on both him and me!

I also gave Pepto before both trips - about 1.5-2 hours ahead time (so as not to interfere w/ benadryl) for potential tummy upset. I brought one of those "hamster" bottles for water - you just store it in the carrier pocket upright, so it doesn't leak. That way, no bowl or anything needed - you can just put the little tip inside a small opening in the carrier and they can drink.

Also bring nutrical and treats - to help them swallow a few times if they won't drink - this will help their ears. Bring baby wipes, a pee pad, dog food in case of plane delay.

Oh, is that the law in Taiwan?? There isn't any quarantine laws in Hong Kong (I checked with that website). Normally, I won't take her, but if it is my wedding, I want to! :D

You could bring the pad outside near her favorite pee spot - she might want to go on it. Also, soak up some of her own pee on the pad so she knows what it's for.

i have the charlie and the london bag(both by kwigy-bo) and they were both airline approved on united. i would think the alex would be as well.

I flew with Bella from Germany to the States and then back to Germany. The trip from Germany to Chicago was about 8+ hours and then 2 more hours after that to another state. She did great on the plane and didn't make a peep. One flight attendant let me take her out of her carrier on the shorter flight. On the long flight I snuck her out when no one was watching and put her on my lap underneath a blanket and she slept that way for awhile. At other times I would just put my hand in the carrier.
I gave her benadryl before each flight which helped a lot to calm her. My vet recommended this. I put a pee pad in the bottom of her carrier wrapped around the bottom pad and taped it there just in case she had an accident but she didn't need it. She went before and in between flights. You can always bring her to the bathroom in her carrier. I brought some food and nutrical with me. I also made sure not to let her eat or drink for a couple hours before the flight.
When I flew into the states all I needed was a health certificate proving she had all her shots, especially the rabies certificate. I also have a European passport that I use which contains all of her records. When I flew back to Germany I also needed another health certificate within 7 days of flying and it had to be sent to the state health department to get signatures and seals on it.
Each state and country is different. Just make sure you check very carefully both of those and also with the airline on their restrictions because some are different. Most airlines only let 1-2 pets in cabin per flight and it has to be reserved ahead of time.

You can get both the health and rabies certificates from your vet. They will have all the forms that you need. You will probably need to let the vet's office know what country you need the certificates for at the time you make your appointment. This is because the state you are in will probably need to send all of the forms that are needed to your vets office with the instructions on what is needed for that particular country so that the vet has all of this at the time of your visit. This is what I had to do because each state and country are different. Also, the health certificate can be no older than either 7-10 days, I always go for 7 or less when you fly so keep this in mind because your vet may have to send the paper work back to the state health department for approval and then you pick it up a few days later at your vets office. This is what happened to me and I didn't know so I had to get everything overnighted. The rabies and health certificates are not expensive. I think it was included in the price of a general visit. With the exception of a $20 check to the state health department. But that was for my state. You will need another health certificate when you fly back home. Hope this helps!

When i went to pick up Sophia in Chicago she came back in cabin with me on Jetblue. I got just a regular carrier from Petco cause I didn't know if my Juicy woulda worked. On the flight home during take off she was nervous a bit. I think it was cause her ears were popping, i tried to give her treats but she didn't want anything. I would say take nutrical with you. I also gave her water so that she could swallow for her ears. After a while she calmed down but all she wanted to do was be in my lap and out of the carrier. The flight attendants didn't even see whne i took her out for a little while. :) Congratulations and good luck!

i currently live in taiwan and the quarantine laws vary a lot from what i read on websites and from what i heard from the dept of agriculture and animal control. I've heard things from 3 days to 3 weeks! and that you have to pay for the quarantine time. So read all the info on those internet sites but get confirmation from a person of what you'll need.

my best suggestion would be to call up the country's embassy and talk to a consulate directly, get all the forms you need ahead of time, make copies so you have them ready at customs. You can even email the country's dept of animal and agriculture directly to see what you will need.

i know for sure you'll need the rabies and health certificate. There will also be documents and forms you'll need filled out to be sent to the correct department.

Oh, the flight to HK if you have a direct one that doesn't stop in Japan or Taiwan, should be about 13-14hrs (from US to Taiwan is about 12 hours depending on tail or head wind)

I flew my cats to S. Korea. The best advise I can give for finding out information for pets is to check with the country's embassy, check out the country's OFFICIAL website, or check with the USDA vet services department. Also the health certificate must be USDA approved. It can not be the standard health certificate for traveling within the US. Contact the USDA Vet Services (there is one in every state) they can help you get the correct information and what you need, etc.

As for the animals, oh yes they usually fly better than us. Regarding a sedative, I highly discourage against it. Many airlines will not let the animal fly if they are sedated and for long flights sedation can have negative effects. Giving the animal a treat during take-off and landing help their ears from bothering them. As for the airline, each airline has different regulations and many require a reservation for the animal so it is best to check with that airline. Korean Air allowed only one or two animals in cabin at a time so a reservation was a must.

Oh one other tip. You want a direct flight to the country you are going to. If you are going to Hong Kong and stop in Japan, your pet also has to be approved by the Japanese government before transferring to the next flight. This includes quarantee time, etc for that country.

You may also want to check and see if there is a quarantine coming back.

Coming back into the US all you need is a current rabies vaccination and health certificate. Not sure how you get that in another country. I get that at the military base because my hubby is in the Army.

Going to Mexico with Lucy last week was easy. She had to have a health certificate and her vaccine records dated within three days of travel. I was reading that in order to take her to India, once we get a health certificate will need to be sent to the USDA for a seal of approval which we didn't know. The website that was posted earlier here is very helpful!

Chloe is 6.5 lbs, 11 months old. Does anyone know how much children benadryl can I give her? 30 min prior trip?
