I'm planning on spading my little girl towards the end of this month. I called a vet close to where I live and they charge $185 for the surgery. Is that an average price?

Sounds really low to me! It was about $300 when Teddy was neutered

In Scotland a spade is for digging the garden....or whacking the earth with - I take it you don't mean spading your poor wee Yorkie, but speying it ?
Over here the surgery is £130-£140 which would be double in your money - $260-280 so your price sounds good to me !

I don't know because I've never had one spayed. But yes, you spay or have spayed, not spade or have spaded. Not to worry, we know what you mean. ;) Sounds like you have a good price though! Good luck to you and your baby!! :)

I checked around here at a few of the vets and they charge between $265- $300. So I would say that is a good price....How old is your lil one...

That's definately a bargin! My Veterinarian charges twice that much at $400.

Wow - I can't believe most of you had to pay that for a spay! Almost every where I have checked around here was $100-$150 with the exception of one place that quoted me $350 (but they are really expensive for everything they do). I've always thought $150ish was about average...but $300+ just makes me realize why so many people don't spay and neuter their pets

Did anyone ever consider the neuter and spay clinic? I am facing similar issues here. I have two female puppies who are both older than 4 months now. The vet's estimate of the spaying cost, along with the options and the complimentary services is around $400 dollars each. Then my friend gave me the information about the spay clinic. Of course, the clinic didn't offer the optional presurgery blood test (for anesthesia administration) and other services like the vet had proposed. Nevertheless, the cost is lower than 100 bucks for each dog. I assume they still use pain relief and iv there for the surgery. any suggestions, experienced yorkie owners? .... Am I maltreating the dogs if I send them to be spayed at the spay and neuter clinic?

No, using a clinic is not maltreating your baby. Clinics are under the same laws as vets, they are usually just non for profit organizations. Being a responsible owner does not have to coast you an arm and leg!!

I am glad that you identify with my feelings and worries. I do want to save the cost while giving my yorkies the best care I can possibly afford. Do you know ... if it is safe to skip the pre-anesthesia blood work if I bring my puppies to the spay clinic, ... some of those options that the vet offered seem to be important (like microchip insertion, help extract teeth if necessary, heartworm test, pull out hairs from ears, etc.) Are there something important/critical that my puppies will miss out if they are sent to the spay clinic instead of the vet?

I'm glad someone posted this I just went to the vet and they gave me Lucy's spay estimate I'll put the breakdown down below. I'm conflicted because when I bought her they gave me a certificate to have a free spay at the Animal Care Center in our area, I went there for her first 2 vet appointments and it seemed fine but I'm worried about taking her someplace that I've only been to twice, while this other vet has been treating our dogs since i was born. Anyway here is the price breakdown:

I don't know what to do that's a lot of money but I'm not sure what is included in the free spay at the other clinic so I guess maybe I should call and find out what is included. What is generally included in teh cost of a spay?

OUCH! Such high prices!!! It makes me so glad that I'm gonna get my Eury fixed at our vet her in Korea. We have a wonderful vet who specializes in small dogs (small breeds are very popular here!) and he has been wonderful with her. He only charges $50 to spay her and $30 for post-op care, so $80 total. We have been discussing when we want to do this and decided in early September. He said between 6 and 7 months of age is good and before her first heat is best. I'm already a bit nervous about it. :rolleyes:

It is definitely a good idea to find out what is included in the free spay (I believe whatever is included should be similar to what is offered at our neuter/spay clinic). The itemized charges you put here are somewhat named differently from those on my list. So I am very confused here. However, I agree with you whatever tests are necessary, you will do them at the vet, regardless of who spays her.

Just for your information, here is the estimate my vet gave me: (my cost will be double, because I have two female puppies)

Thanks for the break-down of your costs. It does seem like my vet prices are high, I guess I never thought about it since we've been going for so long but they just built a new clinic so that's probably reflected in the prices.

I will def. be talking to the Animal Care Center that I have the free spay certificate with and see what it would cost me there.

How much does your vets charge for an office visit/exam, mine charges $42 for a puppy wellness exam, last night we spent about 90 bucks on an exam, rabies shot, DHPP booster and 1 vial of revolution.

You all are KILLING ME with those prices!!!! Here in California, SF area, it is wayyyy higher! I paid $610 for Truffles spay + 10 extractions! Of course everything was included for this low low price :rolleyes:

WHAT? WOW! I do have to say the cost of vets in the US are OUTRAGEOUS! Here in S. Korea the average vet visit for a checkup is $10 and with shots around $30. We have been several times to our vet, as is common with puppies with shots, random issues, etc and our total cost is less than $200. Our vet speaks wonderful English, they text and call your cell phone to remind you that shots are due, you don't need an appointment, in fact they really don't give em out, and when you walk in we've never had to wait more than 10 minutes. The care has really been exceptional so far and the price is so reasonable, why on earth are prices for vets in the US so outrageously high??? I guess the answer is, it's all about profit, profit, profit. *shaking head* :thumbdown

Now you are killing me with all the great services your vet in S. Korea is offering you. You and your puppies are too lucky. I really envy you!! I am going very broke here with the cost associated with my new puppies. I love them so much still.

The well exam is about the same price as yours. A few weeks ago, I brought my girls for the last DHPP shot of first year. They also received rabies shots, dewormers, and short exam (that's how they called it). I paid a total of $150 for two puppies. I remember the first visit though. It was the well check up right after I bought the puppies. It seemed like this trip was necessary to make sure the puppies were fine. It cost me a total of $90 dollars just for the well check to make sure I don't have to return the puppies to the breeder. There was no lab work, no shots, just checking and weighing the puppies. .... Really need to find a better way to save the cost at the vet!

I talked to the neuter/spay clinic. It will cost me $71 there to spay one puppy, plus the optional pain medication $15 (which of course is necessary). One thing I know I will include is the heartworm test (which is $23 there, at the vet $35). He also said the preanesthetic panel is not required because I have young puppies. (it's required for older dogs.) The surgery itself is pretty much the same thing, with Isoflurane Anes included. And IV is not necessary, because the operation only lasts twenty minutes. And acquiring heartworm preventative later on is also necessary. You can also acquire all the shots there at the spay clinic in the future (such as future rabies, distemper/parvo; bordetella). There is even one package that offers all vaccines plus heartworm test at the cost of $56 (heartworm preventative extra).

So you definitely want to check with your free spay service to find out what they cover. And in the future, you should be able to find a neuter/spay clinic in your area as well.

I would suggest you call around because i noticed that in upper middle class areas where people make more money the services are more expensive. and in lower income neighborhoods the cost is lower. the same service is offered.. I think a lowers price would be fine especially of the vet has been around for a while.

In austin, the average cost is around $50. And if you can catch emancipet you can get spay/neuter, shots, check up and what not free! (but you have to get there really early because they only take about 20-30 dogs and cat (around 50 total for the weekend)... AND this includes anyone...
