Should I sell my yorkie?
 

I have had a 9 week old female pup for about a week and a half. Everything was fine until about a 3 days ago when she started showing submissive signs to me. Around my wife she acted normal but me she seemed downright scared. I'm the one that is home with her everyday.

Well today I played with her for a little while and she took about a 10 minute nap. When she awoke I went to put her in her litter box and she barked and ran away from me while still barking. She hid under the couch and then behind the entertainment center. Now mind you I have never did anything for her to be scared of me, no yelling, definitely no hitting. When I picked her up she was shaking like a leaf. I did some reading and this can come from abusing your dog and things like that but I haven't the heart to do something like that. The submissive behavior started happening 3 days ago but it was really bad today. The only thing I can think that triggered it moreso was the fact that I took her to the vet yesterday and she received 3 shots. But she was fine up until today.

Can anyone tell me what could have happened all of a sudden to make her scared of me? Can I fix this or let someone else try?

if you took her to the vet she is probably just associates you with the vet office (not pleasant) :( or maybe there is someone else (a male son or friend???? ) that has stepped on her or something making her afraid of men????
It takes a little time for anyone to bond to their pet .... there was one woman on here who had a problem with her pup being a nuisance (agressive... not bonding with her... ect.... ) but now i guess they are both doing fine.... i would say take it slow, give her lots of treats... when you approach her talk to her in a soothing voice and always approach her in a way so she can see you coming... if you come up behind her you are likely to scare her even more......

I would say that it sounds like you taking her to the vet must have her scared of you. I would give it a chance if I were you. She will probablly get over it. I would just keep paying alot of attention to her. I have to take my Duke to the vet Monday for his 2nd set of shots which will be the first time for me taking him. I hope he doesn't act like he doesn't like me after that.

i always made my fiance take toby to the vet that way i wouldnt be the "bad guy"..........lol........ is that thinking ahead or what

lol, that's the exact words the vet used. "bad guy" She also wouldn't allow me to hold her while she administered the shots because she didn't want me to be that guy so she called her assistant to hold her. I was in the room though. My wife and I are the only two people here and the only two people that handle her. I just don't know what to do or how it got to be this way.

Don't worry, sometimes they are just moody, and miss their families. Give her some time to adjust. Give her lots of affection, or at least try. When I would give a stern NO! to Coco, for a while she wouldn't come to me throughout the day. But I started giving her treats and praising her when she was good and she made a turn around. Just be patient.

Hey, I should've thought of that. You know I do always ask for the nasal vaccine whenever possible. He doesn't know it, but Hefner should thank me for that.

i disciplined toby a few days ago (put him out on the balcony because he was a "bad dog") and eh wouldnt come over to me for the rest of the day..... he just sulked in his crate........ you know what i find interesting though... (this has nothign to do with my fiance taking toby to the vet) when my fiance comes home toby goes and hides in his crate :confused: ..... when it is just the two of us he is out playing or sleeping out in the open, but when hubby comes home he slinkes off to hsi crate.....
im at a loss because i am the disciplinarian (i should have a degree in this.... it sounds so professional) so if anything he should be slinking away when i am around...... pets are wierd :rolleyes:

A friend of mine said that her dog showed submissive signs and peed when she walked by. Turns out the dog knew she was pregnant before she did and was acting strangely because of it.

awweeeem poooor baby.. shes totally associating you with the vet. i would just continuously love her.. dont sell her, shes wayyy to cute to sell

I'm not a trainer but if it were my yorkie - I would act normal around her - also get try to be at eye level when you can and let her know you're not a threat - I stayed on the floor ALOT when I first got both my girls - I carried them around alot also to get them used to me - try leaving things with your smell around where she sleeps so she can associate your smell with comfort....

Like I said - I'm not a trainer but my girls bonded within weeks of me having them around me as much as possible while they were little...though I was lucky that I could stay home with them also....I forced myself to leave the house so they'd understand that I'm gone sometimes too...

she probably is still getting used to leaving her yorkie family and all is new to her - she's only 9 weeks so she's very young...

Thanks for the advice guys and gals. She warmed up to me 20 minutes after we bought her from the breeder. These are the first signs of any problems. From now on my wife will be the one taking her to the vet, that's for sure. Hopefully I can fix this. Again thanks.

Here are a couple of hints. My vet does not want me to hold my yorkies when something unpleasant is going on, like a shot. She prefers one of her assistants be the bad guys. Perhaps if you held your puppy while the vet was administering the shot, she remembers that. After the shot, I take mine and love on them and talk in a soothing tone. I also make it a point to take them in the car just for a little ride and finish with a treat so they do not associate leaving the house with a trip to the vet. Now, when they hear my keys rattle, they head for the door for a ride. I also suggest you get down to her level, yep, on your hands and knees and handle her a lot, along with a cherio or two. Lastly, my small yorkie, Lacey was pretty scared, shakes still if she gets insecure by a loud noise. It really bothered me, so I really try to hold her and talk quietly to her that it is ok and I have seen a lot of improvement. Good luck.

You just seem to sweet for not to warm up to. She is just young yet and everything is so new. You'll see, this will pass and she will adore you to the point you can't do anything wrong. Just be patient!

Aww don't worry too much she will be fine. when i first brought Mignon home my boyfriend was playing fetch with her and accidentally smashed her in her face with the toy. She didnt speak to him for a week or better. She just couldn't let it go, eventually she started playing with him again and now she adores him. She still will not play with that toy tho. If you throw it she brings you another one, just in case.. LOL

One thing I've remembered for a long time I learned from a parenting class. To a small child your hand is the size of his/her head, just imagine a hand coming at you that size. I would think it would be worse for something as small as a Yorkie.

I can remember being a little girl, it seemed from my memory that I only reached up to this neighbors knee. It felt like I had to look up forever to see his face.

I don't know how tall you are but all of a sudden maybe she realized how big you are. I like Villette's suggestion of getting down on the floor with her. Maybe you could lay in the floor to watch tv and let her cuddle in the crook of your arm. Sylvia

IMO , you should give the puppy a chance . The pup is in adjusting time . Sometimes peoples are asking too much at the same time from a puppy .

maybe at the breeders a man either hurt or or disciplined her so thats why she is afraid of you.

If you baby talk to her or suk up to her you will be rewarding her for her behavior to run and hide.
Just tell her No....not in a harsh voice and pick her up. Then just walk around with her or put her on your lap, act like it is not such a big deal at all. That is my advice. I would take her out to socialize around more men too. Get other men to hold her.

well my mistery is solved......... i forgot that my fiance threw his shoe and accidentally hit toby in the face!!!!!... now i know why he hides when he comes home :p

You should give her a chance , she is just 9 weeks old . She have to adjust to you and your home . I am sure , she will not be afraid of you for long . Talk to her with a calm voice . All she needs is time to adjust . I already have pups that react like her and the wrong advice would be to talk to her with a loud voice because you'll scare her much than she is now . As I already said , be calm , tell her that you love her and be patient with her .

The vet thing may be the cause. I would try to be as loving as possible. Don't force her. Let her come to you. When I take Maggie to the vet, the nurse comes to get her and they give her the shots when I am not around. This way, Maggie doesn't hold it against me, but she does PP on their floor. You might ask them if they will administor the shots without you being in the room. She will be fine. The one that feeds, clean up, plays, naps with---is the alpha that they look up to.

omg that happened to me!!! lol My shep had me so upset cause he started acting extremely submissive but only towards me. Two weeks later i found out i was prego. He finally started acting normal a few months after the baby was born. I guess that wouldnt apply in this situation though cause well its the man in this case the puppy is acting submissive to.

Dogs go through a period at 8 weeks or so when they become easily scared it is explained well in this article stages a pup goes through
