Kind of sad.. So I always just thought that Armani was still little and thats why he wouldn go up and down stairs. But yesterday I was talkingt to another yorkie mommy and she said her yorkie is also 6months old and flies up and down stairs. So I dunno if Armani tried one time and fell and wont do it now. I put him on the third step up and bribe him with treats to come down. And he hesitates them comes. He wont jump up and down on the couch. The vet says that his legs are fine. So whats going on?? Does anyone else have this problem? |
I don't have this problem with Susana - she jumps all the time  I DO have this same problem with my chihuahua, Josephine. She is perfectly capable of going up and down stairs and jumping on/off the couch. However she REFUSES to do it. She will cry until we pick her up or put her down. Stairs are a definite NO. |
Thats exactly what Armani does, he just sits and waits for someone to come get him |
I think they are just afraid. Maybe he did fall once and that's why he doesn't want to do it now. Josephine fell off the bed once when she was about 8 weeks old and hurt her leg. I've always thought that is why she is afraid. |
Mine are afraid too. But I'm sure its because they are not carpeted stairs they are tiled stairs. The only one that will go down them is Brodie. I think its too slippery for them. |
We don't want our yorkie or maltese to develop luxating patellas, so we have little carpeted stairs at the edge of our bed and the couch. You might try getting stairs like that and get him used to it, and then maybe he will attempt the big stairs. But if the stairs are not carpeted, it's likely that he won't want to go up and down them. |
puppy I have had many who refused to jump on anything or climb stairs..I perfer that type..the ones I have now as so nosy, I can't keep them off or out of anything...except they will not jump over even the shortest of gates...I use the hamster play yard, unhinged to keep them out of a room I do not want them in.. |
i have a 2 1\2 month old and he just learned to go up the stairs, but he still will not go down them. |
Both of mine were afraid at first so I just worked with them. They were more afraid to come down than go up. So I worked with them by doing it for them. Put their front feet down one step, bring their back feet down and do it a few steps at a time. I did it on the bottom 3 steps the first few times then worked up a little farther each time. They figured it out after a few tries. But, try to get them to go sideways (our steps are kind of narrow). a couple times Remy got going straight and his butt would go right over his head coming down and he'd roll the rest of the way. Thank goodness they are carpeted! They do slide and fall on the wood steps going outside if they are in a hurry, tho. |
My mother came to visit one day when Conner was about 4 months old. Conner went to go down the stairs to greet her and fell down the steps. He was not hurt but was scared. He has not gone down the steps since (and he is 15 months old). He will come up the stairs only if my nieces or nephew are upstairs (he loves kids), otherwise, I cannot bribe him. The only time he hopped up onto the bed was when I was sick and could not get up to put him on the bed. He jumped up and made it on the first try. I cannot figure why he will not jump up on the bed. He will jump off the bed, sofa and chairs. |
mocha was like that around 3 months, but after i worked with her for a couple of days going up and down the stairs, she learned to do it. now she jumps to and from everywhere and it scares me to death, because she's so impatient to wait for mommy and jumps the second i leave. !!! |
Turbo will go up them, but not down. I like the fact he doesn't go down. I know he wont run down and out into the street from out house. |
Maggie will go up and down the outside stairs (about 8 steps) but will only go up out inside steps (14 steps) she fell once and would not come down. I kind of feel better that she is afraid to come down. She has grade 4 lauxating Patella so I try to carry her up and down any stairs as much as possible. |
Nope, sorry. Aubrey is the master at going up and down stairs, he also likes to play the game "Last one to the top is a wrotten Egg" :) |
My first, Brutus, wouldn't do stairs of any kind or jump up or down for 12 years. We never had any trouble with his legs for all that time either. Maxwell is a jumper, leaper, runner, athlete and it's night and day. I'm always worried he'll jump off the groomers' table, porch, etc. He's fearless. It was less nerve wracking with Brutus. |
