She's not a teacup!! Hi Everyone, this is my first post. I have two beautiful Yorkie kids and love reading what you fellow Yorkie-lovers have to say. I was hoping I could get some advice... My male, Valentino, is a healthy 3 year-old, 7 pound ruff and tumble Yorkie. My female, Lolita, is a healthy 1 year-old, 3 pound sweet and petite Yorkie. But she is more than ready to play and wrestle with her brother. I love taking them both on walks and they are the best of friends. The problem is that I hate fielding questions about her being a "teacup", "pocket yorkie", "mini" or anything else of that nature. They are both from the same wonderful, repatable breeder and Lolita was expected to be at least a pound more, but it just didn't happen...as for the other females in the litter. Her parents were beautiful 5 and 6 pound Yorkies. She draws attention to her size, but I don't want to help incourage the popularity of dogs bred to be "teacups"...which isn't even a Yorkie breed, like some people think. It makes me sad to think people think it was intentional that she was "MADE" so small, I would never want to risk a puppy's healthy just so she could fit into my pocket! So I ask for your advice, what should I say when EVERYONE calls her a teacup... |
Hello and welcome to YT. I would just tell them that there is no such thing as a teacup and if they need proof they can try to find the word in the AKC standard for Yorkies. |
Just tell everyone that they're both Yorkies within standards and just compare it to people, how we have people that are only 4'10" and some are 6'5" and it doesn't matter, we're all just people, just different shapes and sizes.;) |

1 Attachment(s) Yes... My husband and I always joke....Tino takes after his Daddy, my husband is a 6'3'', 300 pound retired professional athlete, and Lola takes after her Mommy, a 5'4'', 100 pound thin gal. I don't even want to get started on the ridicule that my husband gets when he is walking our babies by himself...:p It is hard though to keep your cool when people INSIST she is something she is not and look at you like a dummy because you don't agree. |

When my Heidi was around my 6'3" hubby wouldn't even take her from the house to the car on the lead for fear of the neighbours seeing him!...men!!!!:p Welcome to YT by the way!!! |
I have a 5lb female and a 2 1/2lb female and I know where your coming from. I just tell people she is a tiny yorkie with a BIG bite! Her and her sister will play and play and my tiny one will get the best of the bigger one! it's so funny to watch them go at it! Glad you founf the site! I know you will love it here! |

p.s. the boys might have the size advantage in our house....but the girls are the bosses :) |
Heck I had someone ask me if my 6 lb yorke was a teacup:confused: I think when most people ask that it is an innocent question. I would just very nicely tell them there isnt such a thing |

Welcome to YT! I understand your frustration, you can't stop people from keep asking that, it's annoying, but you have to come with a phrase that you can use each time, so you don't have to think each time they ask. You guys look like a happy family! My hubby also walk my little boy, isn't that great??? we're lucky :) Post more pictures of your babies soon |

This Is What I Would Say To Anyone Asking Quote:
IN PEOPLE GOD CREATED ALL DIFFERENT SIZES, RACES OF DIFFERENT COLOR AND SO IT IS WITH YORKIES TOO, THEY ARE ONE OF HIS MOST PRECIOUS GIFTS TO US HUMANS AND SO IT IS THE SAME WITH THEM, HE CREATED THEM OF DIFFERENT SIZES AND WEIGHTS AND ALSO LIGHT AND DARK SHADES OF COLOR SO IT IS THROUGH THE LORD THAT WE ARE BLESSED REGARDLESS OF THEIR SIZE THEY ARE A GIFT TO EACH OF US FROM HIM THAT HAVE ONE, JUST AS WE ARE TO EACH OTHER. Wishing you and yours a wonderful day, from the both of us Patti and Jack and our girls Baby Blessing and DollieDae |

My Yorkies are all on the small side , when peoples asked me if they are " Teacups " , I asked them if they often see peoples walking with tea cups wearing a harnesses . |
Love Viewing your Pictures. I just saw your beautiful pictures and wanted to say I loved the one of your husband walking your yorkies, that is so special. My hubby would do the same if he was physically able to, the girls are such a joy to him as well as myself. He has Parkinsons and I recall years ago how he use to take our Doberman on hikes here in the mountains. Have a nice day. From us both Patti and Jack and our girls. |
Size doesnt matter 1 Attachment(s) Well since we are showing size comparisons....I think I have a pretty funny one.... |

hi Welcome to yt. i love that my hubby will take any of our dogs with him and be proud. from what i have noticed is that most guys want the big dogs but once the snuggle with smaller ones they fall in love and do the baby talk (even in public) hehe. and for the tea cup thing i think its just a term to say how small they are, and like you said you never really know how much any of them will weigh. i thought for sure lacey would get to be about 5-6 lbs but she is almost 6 months and only weighs 3 lbs (well as of a couple of weeks ago) the vet said she might only be 4-4 1/2 lbs. both her parents were 6 lbs go figure. there were 3 in the litter my friend has her sister and she weighs less them 3 lbs still. and i think the boy from that litter was already 5 lbs when he was 4 months. for me i did'nt really care about the size she would be i care about the fact we were ment to be a family :) and gave up on explaining the whole tea cup thing to paople and just say no she is just small. |
