just discovered our 4 m.o. pup is blind in one eye we think she was born that way, but we had no idea. even our vet missed it. she's perfectly happy and will probably still have a great life, but i feel a little dumb that we didn't figure it out until now. we just thought she was 'puppy clumsy.' it all makes a lot more sense. she's as normal as any other pup otherwise (a little small, but that's just fine with us.) she's fast as hell, and you'd never really know she was any different by the way she plays. if you're real quiet though, you can roll a ball by her on the left side when she's not expecting it. she'll be spayed in a couple months, and i don't see any reason to take her in before that...unless maybe i should? |
i'm sorry to hear that. As a mommy of a puppy that must be hard to hear. but like you said i'm sure she will still have a fun and playful life :) she just might need to be a little extra careful :) |
Awwwwww that's too bad, but I'm sure she doesn't even know any different. |
Awww you will love her all the same and just take a few extra precautions and all will be fine. |
I bet she will be just fine since she has never known any different. I know you will love her all the same and probably even more. Patty |
...pets & people are very resilient ...she probably doesn't know any different....she sure sounds like she's doing great...what a sweet heart By the way.... :welcome4: to you & you new pup!!...There sure has been a lot new members lately!! |
Hi, I had a kitten we rescued that had an infection in his eye that required his eye to be removed so he was blind in one eye since oh about four weeks when we found him. He lived 19 full happy years (Indoor cat) and he never realized that he was different. He managed perfectly. She'll be fine. She doesn't know anything different. I would let your breeder know however, that she's blind in one eye. Maybe she'll refund part of what you paid for her. I know it's not a money issue but you can use the $$ for something special for your little girl. Best of luck. Elaine |
Welcome to YT! Was your question--We just noticed she is blind in one eye, but we haven't taken her to a vet yet? When we did the first vet check the vet didn't notice? If that is the case--I would probably go and see the vet to make sure it isn't on ongoing issue, such as an infection that may still continue to spread. Or something that could be fixed. But, as long as it isn't ongoing, I would have to agree that the wee one will probably be just fine! |
I would let your breeder know because the blindness might be genetic in which case she doesn't need to breed the mom and dad again |
Poor little baby! But she'll be okay, happy and loved. I also would check her out if the vet hasn't already checked for infection, etc. What's her name and welcome to YT! Judy |

I have a 6 month old who is blind in her right eye. She has hydrocephalus and MVD so we don't know which one is causing the blindness. Hopefully it is the MVD and she will regain all or some of her sight. Get your little one tested if you have not already. It is a simple test and only cost around $45 or so. |
Awww, but with a mommy like you I am sure that she will be fine. She is so cute! |
My first yorkie named Maļa was just like yours when I took her home and I knew about it . She lived a very happy long life . She died at 18 years 11months 2 weeks old . I never regretted taking her home . |
update: i called the breeder to ask a few questions, and then she tells me that our pup had an eye injury as a result of a fight when she was little. they took her to their vet, who gave some steroid drops and told them the dog was fine. i wasn't told any of this before we took her home. so yesterday, i took her to my vet, who told me that her lens is dislodged, she has a cataract and scarring from the injury, and she is definitely blind. there's really nothing we can do for her, but i feel like the breeder wasn't entirely honest with me. as a matter of principle, i think i'll ask for some money back (even though it's definitely not about the money - i'm just a little choked that a) i wasn't told; and b) their vet said the dog was fine. |
Awe.. Thats sad. I am glad that you still love her! You are a great mom! |
