If that same pup ended up in a poorer area, it would have been a fraction of the price.
As with any store, they priced their wares at whatever price people are silly enough to pay.
Celebrities and/or wealth does not ever insure a good home. IN fact it is often the opposite and I tend to be very cautious with them. I have only sold once to someone very wealthy, same price as any of my pet puppies. The person was so down to earth and sensible I forgot she was wealthy, and she is the best friend of another pup owner of mine that I felt very comfortable selling the wealthy person this pup.
As for Brittany, my opinion is --'just another air head allowed to run loose."

It doesn't say reputable...it says 'private'. Does that mean they just want to keep their names private?? I guess it could have a worse life. I just hope her boys don't torture it.
She just has NO sense!!

MyFairLacy 07-14-2007 04:54 PM

Really..what does "private" breeder mean anyway? Non-commercial? Small backyard breeder?

I try to not judge folks who may have bought from a puppy store, because a lot of them just don't understand the whole puppy mill thing!! Spreading the word and educating people is absolutely the BEST thing we can do and will get us much furthur than passing judgement. People see a darling puppy in a store and unsuspectingly buy it. The saddest part about this, in my opinion, is the fact the the majority of these purchases are "impulsive" and not well thought out. Any puppy is a HUGE responsibilty and not one to be taken lightly. I pray for Brittney's puppy's sake that he will be well cared for.

So nice to meet you, I'm afraid Ohio is one of the worst and we have a big job. I tell people our first dog was purchased from a pet store and little did I know at that time. Certainly education is the answer just as you said.

She already had a yorkie named Baby. I don't know if it is true or not but there was stories of her selling her house and including Baby and two German Shepards with the contents. She had a Maltese named Lacey at one point and then three Chihuahuas. I could be wrong but I don't think she has any of these dogs anymore. She was voted the world's worst celebrity dog owner in 2006.

You know what this means, these back yard breeders and puppy mills are really going to start exploiting these yorkies. Whenever celebrities start buying something EVERYONE starts wanting what they have.

s13silviagirl 07-15-2007 03:31 AM

Wow, talk about a 'spur of the moment' purchase! I hope that the kids don't torture it either. But, when mom isn't there to discipline her kids, how can she stop them? I know my girls (4 & 1) adore our dogs and cat. They know the difference. Stinky the cat is to pet only, Chance the Retriever is to play with, and Turbo the Yorkie is offlimits unless mommy or daddy are there with them.

I think she should concentrate on her kids, and NOT on more 'accessories'.

I'm buying Milo from a breeder who has his own shop - he ONLY sells his own puppies when he has them, if his bitches have not had babies he simply doesn't sell puppies. IF there's any puppy in the shop, he/she is always with his mum.

I also suffer when I think of this "lady's " dog.

The difference is the word reputable.......and I still maintain NO reputable breeder, I know of would sell pets thru a petstore. As Lorraine, I believe, said reputable breeders want to interview prospective owners of their pets. They care far too much for their puppies to allow them to be sold thru a petstore and have no control of the future homes, they would go to.

It just doesn't happen to my knowledge.....if it did, I would be appalled at the breeders ethics.

Lorraine 07-15-2007 10:02 AM

A pet store can claim anything about where they get their dogs from. And yes there are breeders, not reputable that sell to pet stores but they are not reputable or ethical and don't want to stand behind their puppies or have anyone on their premises.
It is a quick way to get some money and get pups out of their place to make room for more pups coming up.
There is a pet store in my area, a few of them actually that claim they get their pups from 'loving local breeders' not puppymills. I beg to differ with them because if they were loving breeders they would not be dumping them into pet stores for fast buck and no idea where their puppies are going and if the buyer has any idea of how to take care of it or indeed should even have one right now.
Under the rules of the Canadian Kennel Club, these puppies cannot be registered and our CKC rep a few years ago paid a little visit to a pet store claiming to sell CKC registered puppies. They are no longer making that claim as I t could be pursued by the CKC.
It is also against the Code of Ethics of the Canadian Kennel Club for any breeder so sell through a pet store. This is also the case of any breed club in both Canada and the US.

MyFairLacy 07-15-2007 12:29 PM

If you ask any petstore where they get their puppies from they will tell you private breeders, breeders, local breeders...do you really think a petstore would tell you that they got their puppies from puppymills. No! I'm sure they do get occassional puppies from smaller breeders..but these are not reputable breeders. They are backyard breeders.

scrapindee 07-15-2007 03:00 PM

I've been in that pet store. They do not buy their dogs from breeders. Their dogs are in glass cages in the front window when I was there. And it stank in there. Doesn't matter that the name is Bel-Air, the pups appear to be from puppy mills.

Shame on Brittney--just another media event; I'm sorry for the puppy she chose; hope her housekeeper likes the puppy.
