Can they hold it?? So we just made an offer on a house and THEY ACCEPTED!!! We are sooo excited!!! I am really nervous about the babies and their potty habits. Right now they go on pee pads and when I get home I take them out to go potty. I want to train them to ONLY go outside. How do I do that when I'm at work during the day? Do your babies hold themselves all day while you're at work? If so how did you do it? I figure I can let them out into the yard before I go to work, and I'd like to come home and let them out then, without having to see pee/poo on the ground. Is it too much to expect them to not go all day? Rocco is still a puppy and we're working on the training thing. I just don't want him peeing all over our new house with WHITE carpets  |
Congrats on the House!! |
mine used to get angry and go, but since i got him so good toys and let him out in the main part of the house, he hasn't had an accident since. if they are used to going in the house while you are gone, it may take longer for you to train them to do otherwise. i know some yt'rs might think i'm mean, but i also don't let them have water while i'm gone. (edgar is a "large" yorkie according to my mom. since he's like 13lbs, his bladder is probably bigger than your babies' are) |
Well in the new house my fiance and I are giving 1 bedroom to the doggies. That will be where they sleep and where they will be gated while we're at work. We're not letting them have run of the house while we're not home. They will have just their bedroom to hang out in. They have so many toys, I've had to donate a ton. |

Oh, and Miss Baby doesn't wait till I get home, and I come home on my lunch break! So she's by herself for 4 hours tops. |

I've hear the rule of thumb is, they can hold it as many months old they are plus one hour. Every baby is different, but that's a general estimate. Hope that helps :) Congrats on the new house. We just moved the end of March after looking for 8 months. We were so happy to finally get a house!! |
[QUOTE=AMD;1229197]I've hear the rule of thumb is, they can hold it as many months old they are plus one hour. QUOTE] that's pretty cool! i'll remember that and tell all my impatient friends. but i'm thinking that only lasts for a while...edgar is almost 2 1/2 yrs. he can't hold it that long :) |
carpets You have my deepest sympathy..! How long they can hold it and how long they will hold it, is very different. LOL |

I have to come home on my lunchbreak and let my yorkies outside to potty, too. Nobie, why don't you just set pee pads around their room to use while you are gone and then when you are at home in the mornings and evenings take the pee pads up and teach them to potty outside? I hate to break it to you, but I'll be honest.....it's gonna be an adjustment for them to learn to potty outside instead of the pee pads. I can be there'll be some accidents. |

what yorkierose said,, she is soooooooooooo right too |
Any chance you can take up the carpet in their room and replace it with some cheap lanolium or something?? Maybe put a tarp down in their room or something until they get the hang of it?? |
I agree with yorkie rose . . . do you have a tiled area where they can stay all day so in case they are unable to hold it, at least it is not your NEW white carpet :p Both my babies are in my laundry room . . . Tiger stays on the floor and my Annika stays on the counter . . . both are very good at holding it but the minute I come home for lunch, they would go . . . Tiger has had a chance to hold his for over 8 hours too and so is Annika and they are fine . . . it all depends on the situation. I definitely they need to go the minute they see their mommy come home :) - just way too excited :) Congrtulations on the new house . . .hope I can see it when I visit SFO |
Congratulation on your new home. WE just sold a new home and are quite happy especially since it's a buyers market and there are quite a few homes for sale to choose from. My two Yorkies are trained on potty pads and outside both. It works wonderfully for us, for when we go into motels and don't relish going out in the dark or the rain and so on, and also in the motor home when going outside isn't all that easy. If we have appointments where we can't take them along, then we leave them with run of the house and a couple of pads down in the kitchen area just in case they need to go. I block the doggie door. I won't let them have access to the outside unsupervised at any time. Anyway, the pads and also outside works perfectly for us. |
I'm not really worried about Coco, it's more Rocco, she's fine. I'm going to put them on a feeding schedule, so I won't lay food down for them other than breakfast in the morning, and dinner when I get home. I think if I stop free feeding them I can better control their potty schedule too. Is that true? |
I trained Meeka to hold it as long as she can by using a crate. I would come let her out at lunch and slowly take lunch later, making her stay in there longer. By 4 months she has been holding it the whole time I am gone at work, so about 9 hours |
some better than others My Zoey is fully potty trained and was at 6 months. I'm a teacher so I had all summer to train her and when I went back to work in September she was home from 7:15-3:30 every day and no accidents. That's 8 hours and 15 minutes. While I do leave food and water out, I don't think she eats or drinks, she knows her own limits...very smart. My 4 month old baby boy however is having a little harder time understanding he can't go in the house:( He still has another month and 1/2 before I go back to work but if he doesn't hold it he will continue to be in his cage while I'm at work. sooooo it's possible just have to work at it. |

They learn to hold. Keep in mind that Luu is now 8 1/2 months. I get up at six and walk Lulu and she eats her breakfast. I walk her one last time beore I leave for work and take the kids to school. She then gets walked at three when they get home and then again at five thirty when I get home with no accidents. It helps that I have her on a feeding schedule. Lulu eats in the morning and then again at around six at night. She is a tiny thing and we have never had problems. Matter of fact yesterday I got held up at work and she was actually at home for almost eleven hours and when I got home I was expecting to find a mess...none in site. She held it. As soon as I got there though she was like mommy I need to go potty and took off outside so fast that it wasn't funny...she literally was a blurr. I was expecting an accident or two...but she did me proud. She is an awesome baby. FYI I would actually keep baby away from the white carpets...that definitely should be a room that is off limits. Once they go on that carpet you can't ever really expect to get it fully cleaned....because the pee seeps into the padding under the carpet. I am now getting back around to putting down some throw rugs in the house (hubby is happy as a clam). |

Congrats on the new house!!!!!!!! It will be best if you can limit them to a specific area of the house and if that area had some kind of easily cleanable tile. I would probably still put down a wee wee pad or two anyway, cause even the best trained pup will still have an occasional accident. |
Congratulations on the new house! That's just a wonderful thing. Max can hold it, he's also pad and outside trained, and I caught him peeing on the rug just yesterday. Once that smell gets into the rug, there are going to be accidents from time to time. I say, enjoy your white carpeting for as long as you can. Once you have kids, and the dogs get to it, you'll be glad to have no carpeting. Take lots of pictures! |
