New Home - He's Freaking Out 1 Attachment(s) Hi All, I don't post much on this board but I do follow the board daily. At this point I truly need your help. Some of you may recognize my account, I registered awhile back ago after purchasing my yorkie "Gizmo" and attempted to rehome him shortly due to my work schedule. However, I was unable to go through with it since I love the monster sooo much. My issue currently is...we just moved and Gizmo is going bonkers...last night he cried and barked the entire night at the new home when I put him in his crate in the hallway...after 2 hours of that..I dragged it into the room and he still flipped out!!! I know that he's probably having anxiety due to the new environment...however, I was hoping that you all could provide me with some recommendations on what I can do to stop him from barking so much...I just moved in and I don't want to upset the neighbors and I do need to sleep because I have to wake up early to work.... Thank you in advance for taking the time to help me.. Hugs xoxoxo - Gizmo's Mommy.. |
I would definitely keep the crate in your room so he can hear you breathing and moving around and he may get comfort from that. I also would close the door to your bedroom, to make it feel more confined and less open and threatening. His his crate a wire cage or the enclosed kind? If it is the wire kind, drape a blanket or towel over the crate so that is enclosed and feels more den like. Can you throw in a peice of garment that you have worn and has your smell on it, to make him feel closer to you? |
forgot to tell you Gizmo is a cutie. |
Hi Ladylavender! Thank you so much for responding..His crate is enclosed...and all the same blankets are in it as when we lived at the old place...Even when I bring him into the new room next to me and leave him in his crate he was still flipping out...I feel so stressed...I'm at work right now and all I can think about his him.. |
it looks like Gizmo is just adjusting to the new environment. . . maybe the other house has something the new house doesn't? Who knows :) I am sure he will eventually realize he won't be going back . . . hopefully someone can give you some good pointers as I sure don't have any. He is such a cutie though and am so glad you decided not to rehome him :) |
Does he have a favorite toy,or something of yours that he can lie on? I hate to say it, but you may have to just let him go through his anxiety for a while until he settles in. Maybe you can just speak gently to him every so often while he's in his crate. I would keep the crate right next tome on the floor. I feel for you, |
Tiger's Mom - Thank you for taking the time to respond..I really appreciate it.. Judy's Eve - Hi Judy..thank you for taking the time to respond...When I get home tonight...I plan on playing with him for a bit and putting him back in his crate...with me next to him...hopefully...that'll ease him a little bit..and he'll realize..it's ok to be in there... I tried to keep his crate and pen the same as before by putting the same toys and what not...but it's just not working. Once again, thank you to the both of you for responding..you don't know how much it means to me.. xoxo |
Did you use any air fresheners at your old house? Scents -- or the lack of -- really seem to disturb these little guys. If you did, I would suggest making sure you use them in abundance in the new place. It will at least smell like the other house.:) |
Hi Ozzie! Thank you for responding - No, no air freshner...:( |
Moving is a stressful time for anyone, and I'm sure he is picking up on your vibes. It's making him quit upset too. Try to relax, sit on the floor and play with him, give treats, favorite toy, blankie or anything he can relate to. Even if you have to buy a pouch to strap on yourself, carry him around while unpacking, cleaning and such and talk and sing to him. Show him everything as your unpacking and make it a happy time. |
OMGness... He's so adorable! He's probably not very comfortable in his new environment. I would suggest getting some Comfort Zone Plug Ins and put them in areas that you have him frequent the most. I can't be sure that they will work because they don't work on all dogs. I have had major success with them. They tend to put mine to sleep. GOOD LUCK! |
Gizmo's Mommy he is truely a doll :) I know it can be stressful but he will get better with time. he is in a new place and I think maybe he is a little worried that you will leave him? I really hope he gets better. Just try to stay calm and I am sure he'll be the good ole Gizmo in no time. :) |
Oh my, he reminds me ALOT of Stedman (my male Yorkie) - look wise! Gizmo is SO, SO CUTE! :) He is just adjusting to the new house (sounds like he's having a hard time, poor little guy :() - I haven't read through all the other posts, but is the crate in your bedroom where he can see you at night? If not, the fact that he is in a new place, on top of him possibly not being able to see you is probably what is causing him to do this and act this way. Maybe try putting a t-shirt of yours in there...or something with your scent on it in the crate with him so that he feels that you are right there next to him, and he feels "safe" :) Good luck with him - he is a REAL DOLL!! |

Hey All - Thank you so much for all your responses - I'll give all your recommendations a try...Today is going to be a long day...I just want to go home to make sure he's okay... |
