How much is tooo much for a pet yorkie?? im just curious. If you bought a pet yorkie that you did not intend to breed or show, do you require the papers? If so, why?? If not, then why?? What would be your spending limit?? |
Papers are nice to have..... but not always necessary. It is nice to have the pedigree, so you know history and bloodline of your dog & so you can follow some of it's Siblings shows if they are showing. How Much?? for a pet quality pup? No more than $2500.00.......... and that would be pushin it! |
For a pet with no papers I would say 1800.00 tops. |
I would spend $2000 at the most. Any more than that I would want a biewer or a parti. Papers arent really important to me because I dont breed or show. |

Those are top figures, if you can get nice, sweet, healthy Yorkie for less, go for it. Most importantly, HEALTHY! |
If health checks of the parents and puppies were available and testing was done, AND I could see the home, parents, etc...I would pay more than usual for a puppy without papers. After reading on this site for awhile, it is much more important to me to get the health history of the parents/line and to make sure I am buying from a reputable breeder than it is to have AKC papers. |
We have papers for Zoey. We intend to spay her as soon as possible and never had any intention of breeding her, but the papers were intersting because we were able to look up her relatives on the internet. One of them is from Hungary and several are champions who have photos on the internet. It was fun to put their pictures in her baby book. If you just want a pet, the papers are not important. I would say Pet, no papers $1500. With papers $2000. The price is more depending on if it will be limited registration or contingent on a spay/neuter etc |
Papers are important to me. I guess I feel like its proof that the dog is a purebred, and papers are like a birth certificate. They're not important to everyone, but they're important to me. I think my limit would be $2000 for a pet quality yorkie, but you never know. |
1200 is what I spent on my Bella and she has papers.. Buts its not like I really got to choose...They came with her. Which was fine. Getting them didnt make me want her any more or less. It just really depends on what you think about the papers... if there important to you, then get them..if not...then dont...if the papers already come with them..then you really dont have anything to really worry or think about..... Its not like the papers are going to make you love your baby's any more or less BC you do or dont have them. |
For me personally, papers mean that the breeder is more likely to care about his/her line and want it tracked through pedigrees. Obviously, this is not the case all the time, as puppy mills use papers. But a breeder who has taken the time to breed healthy puppies will probably also want an official documentation of the pedigree. The papers themselves don't mean a whole lot to me, but it can be an indication of the breeder's committment. If you can find a good breeder who can sell you a healthy puppy with no papers, I would say go for it! And I would run away from a breeder who sold puppies with papers and no health guarantee of some kind. |
If I was spending any money for a dog or cat for that matter, I would insist on papers. Papers really don't mean much, but I like having them! |
Wow, I'm stunned at the amount people would be willing to pay for a pup without papers. lol, i can't imagine paying 1800 for a pup, with papers :) but that's just me |
Even though Azrael and Zada are registered, I don't give a hoot about papers. I just don't understand why I had to pay as much for my pre-spayed dogs when registeration is worthless as those who bought un-spayed and are showing them. Maybe because she saw me comming from CA. |
I wouldn't want to spend more than like $600 for a dog without papers. If they were AKC registered from non-show breeders, I would pay up to $1500. If they were AKC registered from show-breeders (although not to be used for show or breeding - pet only) I would spend up to $3000. I don't know how much I would pay if I was going to show or breed... |
I also think the price varies from place to place (city, state ,etc), whether it be a ''show quality puppy'' or ''pet quality''. Of course, it's also the people selling who want to make more money-but if it's the only place for you to get a puppy, then some people WILL pay that amount of money. I'd say no more than $2000 for a non-show puppy [going by where I live].. |
How come yorkies are so expensive? And other breeds you can find for $300 to $500? |
Well I have to admit, Tate was expensive. Granted she has Champion Bloodlines (she has Durrer lines in her) and came from a very known and well respected Show Breeder - but she was worth every SINGLE penny. Her breeder actually wanted to keep her for show, but Tate is just too small. She was $2,500 but her breeder was so kind and let me have her for $2,000. And NO...I honestly wouldn't buy a purebred dog without papers. |

She is considered "show quality" - she is just too darn small, LOL. It may sound like alot of money to some people, but if you know anything at all about the Durrer Bloodlines, you might think otherwise ;) And, show breeders ARE going to have show breeder prices. I already knew that when I found her. Sure, I probably could have found a cute little girl for $1000-$1500, but I fell in love with my baby and being that she came from a wonderful and very well respected quality show breeder who STILL keeps contact with me over the phone and through e-mail, just makes me all the more glad that I chose her and spent the money I spent. I wouldn't trade her for anything in THE WORLD and I think the fact that she sells her babies for $2,500 and kindly let me have my baby for $2,000 because she knew that we were saving up for a trip to Germany was WONDERFUL and very kind of her. She is a great breeder and I would go back to her in a MINUTE :) |
I'm going to interject here, just because I am a breeder/exhibitor. You would be absolutely pleasantly surprised at how low the prices show breeders adoption fees are. More often than not they are less than breeders that you find on the internet and advertise in the paper who are just breeding to sell puppies. First of all breeder/exhibitors are breeding for themselves for their next champion to add to their breeding program, that one special puppy that has the "it" factor. Unfortunately, we can't keep all the puppies, so they are placed in preapproved homes. The problem is since we only breed for that next Champion we only breed 1 or 2 litters a year and have a waiting list. |

Honestly, for pet quality without papers, I wouldn't pay more than $600! |
Papers aren't necessary to me. As long as I can see the parents, play the puppy, and get some sort of guarantee from the breeder, then I don't care too much about papers. I paid $700 for Luigi which is AMAZING here in southern California. I refused to pay more than $1000, even that was pushing it. My limit was more around $900 haha. So I did a big search and found many breeders selling for around those prices...some with papers even! I personally can't see myself ever paying more than that much for a doggy, unless I was going to show them or breed them. |

prices I was talking to a friend in my old MD Yorkie club yesterday...prices are just not that high for a pet from a show breeder compared to the Jeff Danes and Wizard of Claws type breeders. I have seen darling, champion-sired males for $750/800. I feel a dog of any breed is worth what the pet owner wants to pay...if money was not an issue and I saw one I wanted, I would pay whatever the breeder asked... |
I am looking for a dog and after a year on YT I know that I want a pet quality, healthy, and genetically healthy, home bred (not backyard bred), loved, cared for dog from a reputable breeder who knows the breed very well. Now that I'm retired, I know what I can afford, which is in the vicinity of $1000, give or take a couple of hundred. If I had a lot of money, it wouldn't really matter, but until I win that lottery, I have a limit. |
I think paper prove it's a pure bred. I would not pay anything over 1500 for a dog without papers. |

Definition of a backyard breeder is not reference to where they are bred. They can be bred, whelped and raised in their home too. |
