I was outside and here came a couple with their little female yorkie following them with no leash! She was adorable, about 3 lbs. I had to stop the lady of course and ask her how she got her not to run away. She said that since she was 2 months old she took her to a training class and she's been like that ever since. Teddy and London pull on the leash, Teddy does more, not so much London but do you think they can still learn if I take them to that class? I was going to pay for Petco classes for them but I didn't cause I heard they weren't good there, and it's hard to find a good place in the city. Even though I would not go outside with Teddy not having a leash but I want him to know just in case to stay and not run away from excitement. :rolleyes: Does anyone's yorkie follow them everywhere w/o a leash? I also saw a chihuahua yesterday that was doing the same!

Chachi and Jewels do. I didnt take them to a training class they just started doing it on their own. We can also leave our gate open while we bring groceries in and they will go out to the sidewalk where we are but they wont run off. I dont take them on walks unleashed but I will walk down to a neighbors house with them unleashed.

I saw a woman walking into Petco & her small dog (?) was not on a leash but was following right behind her....I get so embarrassed when I see this ..I feel so incompetent...mine would have been half way across the parking lot w/ me hot on his tail...

Mine will follow me - actually VELCRO to me but I would never take a chance of walking them free like that on the street or in my neighborhood - if a big dog came out of nowhere and the yorkie takes off running - you have no way to scoop them up.

There's alot to be said for good training - but I'd only walk a tiny dog like that where I KNOW it's safe for them

I think out on the street I'd still want mine on a leash.

As long as you have your dog on a leash, you have a lifeline - a way to pull it out of danger if necessary. I think off leash is good at home, in a fenced in yard, but I'm really leery of taking mine out anywhere without it.

My mom and dad's yorkie, Liberty, stays right by my dad's side when out for a walk. If Liberty sees another dog, he jumps on my dad to be picked up. My Conner would go dashing to check everything out so he is always leashed. We are starting obedience classes on 7/31, so hopefully he will come when I tell him to instead of running in the opposite direction.

awww that is so cute!! He jumps to get picked up! Now that is the perfect yorkie Lol London will jump for me to pick her up but that is when we are home and she wants to be in my lap so i have not lost hope for her. I know I can train her, she is more mellow but it is hard training her with Teddy cause he will pull and pull and run from being happy and I can't stop him. As much as I've tried stopping in the middle of the street, saying no, pulling the leash back he does NOT listen! And London sees this and thinks oh then I can pull too

Mu Yorkie follows me around EVERYWHERE. In fact, I cannot really go ANYWHERE without little Edan right behind me. He even tries to follow me into the bathroom! He is also rather shy and scares easily by strangers, so that is mainly what causes him to stay so close. I think that if your dog is more aggressive, maybe this will happen less? I notice that my dog will not really let people pet him that he does not know and will run away from them when they approach and hide between my legs. So, of course he is not going to be just readily trotting away from me ever.

Even though this is so, I NEVER walk him without a leash for several reasons. First of all, there are always exceptions. Also, since he is so little, it takes him so long to walk anywhere and sometimes he falls behind me. I don't want to cross the street and then some crazed maniac comes around the corner and hurts my puppy. I need for him to be on a leash so that I can control his speed behind and in front of me. Finally, you should never walk your Yorkie outside without a leash because, as we all know, these dogs are VERY VALUABLE. You may not think about it, but there are many people who, first of all, would seriously consider taking your dog, but second of all, there are many pet thieves out here who partially make a living snatching dogs like these up off the street and selling/breeding them for profit. And it is not as hard as you might imagine. They pass you on the sidewalk, your dog might be 2 steps behind you, and bam, both the dog and the thief is gone. So please, guys, be very careful with your baby, sometimes its not always you or your dog's fault if something happens--even a class cannot prevent this.

Did you bribe them with treats? lol I would love to know! I started to teach Teddy young but he is still not like that!

My Bitsy follows me everywhere when I am outside..... but I live in the middle of nowhere so I never worry about another person, car... etc.... Bitsy is 3 1/2pounds... I don't think it is really the size of the dog... probably just their personalities... and some training that contribute to the fact that they don't run off. :)

My boys always stay by my side as well without a leash but I've trained them to do this since they were young.

One thing that I found helpful was that I would take them for a walk in the field (this is way out in the country on my families land so I could safely take them for a walk without a leash) and if they got too far ahead of me, I would silently stop and start walking in the opposite direction. It wouldn't take very long for them to realize that I wasn't with them anymore and they would always run back to catch up with me. This taught them to always stay within a set distance from me.

Now, while this behavior is really great, I do put them on a leash when we go for a walk in my neighborhood or go out in public because I am afraid that another dog may attack them.
