We had a scare last night...
 
My husband had taken Oscar out for the last time before bed in hopes he would potty. He got in an ant bed (we do keep a close eye out for these, we have had a lot of rain and there was a small, new one right where we take the babies to potty--unknown to either of us). Only a couple of bites, but he also ate a few--he eats everything! We quickly got ants off of him and he started throwing up (4 times total). He became lethargic and eyes starting rolling back. We gave nutrical to him. We could not get him to stay awake, nor would he walk--just wanted to go to sleep. We took him to the nearest ER vet (an hour away). The dr. gave him a shot (benadryl). He told us to keep benadryl on hand for these types of emergencies. He is fine this morning--eating, running, peeing, and pooping! It was a scarey evening!:thumbdown

Happy to hear Oscar is doing well this morning! I agree...how scary.

I never knew these ants were so dangerous before reading about them on here.

That is so scary. Are the ants only out in the summer or year round. What type of ants? Glad he is better now.

Not sure about what type--just plain ole yard ants, I guess. We live in the country surrounded by pastures. After a rain they are the worst! The summer is always worse than the winter.

i never knew ants were so bad. i am so glad everything turned out well. were they fireants? i know these do bite.

WOW I had no idea... We live in the country. Any thing you could pass on as to why would be helpful.
What a scare you must of just been so upset.. I am glad for his safe & quick recovery

That was scarey. I'm so glad lil Oscar will be alright. Yes, you'll want to keep benadryl. It's handy for lots of stuff. Bee stings, etc...

Is the benadryl a capsule? liquid? How do you give it and how much do you give? Thanks

I use the children's flavored liquid benadryl.

Molly was bitten by an ant at the ballpark and screamed for an hour, then held her foot all day like it was really hurting. We thought she was being a little drama queen, but now I believe her a little more. It never hurt her appetite, and otherwise she was fine, so it wasn't as serious as your baby's.

We are out in the country too, lots of little critter's around. I'd also like to know how much you would need to give, just in case.

These sound like fire ants in my opinion! They do hurt.. a lot. These are small red ants that swarm all over you and bite at the same time. We have a lot of them in Texas, but have heard they are found in a lot of places. My son carries an epinephrine pen (injection) because he's so allergic. If you have fire ants, it's a very good idea to keep Benadryl on hand!

I am so glad your little one is doing better!

Thanks. I'm glad your baby is ok. Once when we were camping Teddy was walking in some grass and suddenly yelped in pain. He held up his paw and I thought he got stung by a bee. I held him all day while he whimpered. I need to keep some benadryl on hand.

How much do you give them?

How awful. Poor Oscar. I am so glad things turned out ok. I will
keep Benedryl on hand myself after reading your story.

I didn't even think about the ants bothering Sugar. Just last week my daughter was playing in the yard and she started screaming that ants were biting her. I ran outside and she had ants (just the little black yard ants) crawling on her legs, up her shorts, in her shirt, in her hair...they were biting her and I had to pick them all off. She complained about the bites hurting for a couple of hours after that. I was freaking out, we've lived in this house 5 years (in this area for 11 years) and I've never seen anything like it before. I didn't even think to give her Benadryl...I bet that would have helped the stinging.

I'll have to call my vet and see how much Benadryl my 10 lb Yorkie should get in case she gets into the ants or in case of bee stings.

Thanks for the warning on this one. How scary! I'm glad your baby is okay.

Wow whata scare:( so glad he is ok:) Iget so afraid of hornets around here, charlie & joey both try and catch them,and i know they would get stung, witch they never have, would you use benedrly for that also?

those darn things hurt when they bite. Buckeye has been in one of those small hills. I ran him inside and stuck him in water. He was hurting. I know because I have had them attack my foot. they hurt for a long time too.

I am alergic to ants too.

I just called my vet and asked the dosage. For my two 12 POUNDERS it is 1/2 tsp. I would check with your vet to be sure, since mine are larger yorkies.

I am so glad Oscar is okay! I am just now reading this post. Give that little guy a hug. I bet those ants were "fire ants", they are so bad in this area of the country. Wow, what a scare. Guess I need to recheck my yard for those little critters.

Benadryl - 1/2 to 1 mg per pound of body weight if anyone else needs to know.:)

How do you know what dose to give?

Glad your baby is going to be okay!

ER vet said to use liquid children's benadryl--1 mg per pound...does this sound right? I was in a panic, I may have misunderstood. The ER vet was sending Oscar's paperwork over to his regular vet. I will check with them and get back to you.
