How do you feel about debarking? Have any of you done this? How is it even done? I mean, they cut the vocal cords right? And NO I personally would never do it!! |
NEVER ...unless I was totally at risk of losing a dog to excessive barking where I live...had no other means of keeping him/her and ONLY under a doctors supervision - but.. I'd flat out move before ever resorting to that. I do know for some people it's a means to an end but to me it seems cruel and takes away their special language....I won't even get into how the Puppy Mills debark their dogs - it's HORRIBLE |

Does de-barking mean no sounds at all? If so, no way. My yorkie makes so very many intelligent and different sounds to communicate...yips, little growls when he's playing, playful noises, and ferocious "big dog" barks...that would be awful. Plus, how could he/she communicate in an emergency? How would he/she let you know he is feeling hurt or something painful? How would you know he was frightened? No, this bothers me. |
I think it's just cruel. How would you know if they were in pain or trying to warn you about something. Dogs are meant to bark and whine. That's how they communicate with us. |
I think it is very cruel and I wouldn't do it unless it was a COMPLETE last resort. I think it would be like if someone took out our vocal chords. V - urgh. My cousin was the first one who told me about how puppy mills do it. I almost barfed. |
I find it to be inhumane and I am happy to say it is illegal to perform that surgery in New Jersey. |
Some people talk to much and sometimes I wish I could "de bark" them, but unfortunatly I would get into alot of trouble. I cant believe this is legal to do to a dog! How cruel.... I would rather listen to my dog bark then some people talk! |

I met a very well known dog breeder and shower of MinPin's recently and she has her's debarked!!! She said its very common for show dogs to be debarked...is this really true?? I really didnt believe her and didnt like her at all..she just rubbed me the wrong way and the debarking through me over the edge!! Dawn |

ive looked into it and its a pretty simple surgery if done RIGHT there are very FEW vets they know how to do it right they pretty much lower the volume of the dogs bark they still bark just low if the vet does it wrong it can be louder and more annoying i cant say i would NEVER do it since i do own a barker But as of now i cant see myself doing that to him and theres someone in my neighborhood with a debarked dog and i find it more annoying |

My cousin had a doxen that was supposedly debarked. It was a rescue. It is not extremely high pitched but is very raspy. It gets to be just as annoying as any other bark. |
NO WAY! That is absolutely cruel.. for people that want to debark their dog needs to go buy a hamster or something.. dogs are meant to make noise.. people should just train their dogs not to bark if they really dont like it... |

I think there's better ways to handle barking dogs. That to me seems the easy and cruel way out. |

I had a neighbor that had two debarked Shelties. It's like they had laringitis. In my opinion, it was just as annoying & very pitiful. |

The breeder where I got Wobie had two debarked rescues. It was sad because all the other yorkies were barking, and these two were trying to join in with their little pitiful raspy voices. :( |
I think it is cruel mutilation. Animals should not be subjected to pointless mutilation for the convenience and comfort of the inconsiderate humans they live with. -O |

I would never, never do that to any of my babies. Barking to them is their way to communicate. I have a barker but I find the easiest way to deal with her is to start playing and distract her from barking. Most times she had rather play with me than to continue barking. Sometimes I think she barks because she is bored. I think it is cruel and inhumane to debark an animal. If you don't like the barking I agree...find an animal that does not bark. Dogs are meant to bark. |
I have a "barker" in Mr. Simon and have never thought about debarking him. Instead I hired a trainer to train me how to control it. The way I see it dogs bark, that's how they communicate and to take that away so it's less annoying to people (or for whatever reason) is just plain abuse. |
I think of it like this; if your child cried too much, would you have their vocal cords cut? It is horrific and mutilating. There is ALWAYS another way. Almost every rescue I've ever taken in has had a barking problem and I've always been able to train them. I wish it was illegal in more states. Yay for New Jersey! |
