Why does it matter what size Susanah is? I took her to see my mother in law today and she wrinkled up her nose and said, "She's awfully BIG. Are you sure she pure yorkie?" She's 14 weeks old and weighs 3.2 pounds. Her breeder and I predicted she would most likely weigh at least 5 and probably 6 pounds when full grown. That is NOT big. That is right within breed standard. I don't understand why it matters anyway! She could weigh 200 pounds and I wouldn't love her any less. I understand that she is uneducated about yorkies (she truly is), its just the way she said it that has me angry - the way she wrinkled her nose and said it like there was something wrong with Susanah. She then went on and on about how she wasn't as pretty as Annie-Belle was. "She is just so dark and awkward looking!" First, I think she is every bit as beautiful as Annie-Belle. She is darker and a little bigger, but still just absolutely gorgeous! Even Annie-Belle went through an awkward phase at around 12 - 16 weeks old. I always referred to it as her pimply teenager period. I just needed to vent because I think its rude to down someone's baby that way. :thumbdown to her! ~Graleyne |
Graleyne -- what a GREAT post. A 5 or 6 lb. dog is small no matter which way you look at it. If you are happy, then that's all that matters. I'd love to see pics of your little darlin' Susanah. It's like when someone walks up to you and tells you that your skinkid is ugly, or fat, or too skinny, or too short, or too tall. Quite frankly, it is none of their business. |
I Used To Get This All The Time With My Last Yorkie - He Was About 12lb, But We Loved Him And He Was A True Yorkie. Now With Harvey People Say To Us Isnt He Small......... He Is 15 Months Old Now And Still Only Weighs 3.5lb. It Is Rude When Said In That Context You Described - I Agree With You. |
:aimeeyork Speaking for myself...some of the most beautiful Yorkies I have ever seen were larger. It is hard IMO to have a good balanced look when they are smaller. JMO. |
It doesn't matter - you're right ....If that's her in your avatar she's a little DOLL I don't understand the obsession and rude comments over size with some people. I've never encountered it myself but have seen so many posts just like yours. People need to stop thinking they're such experts on this breed...most all people who act rude like that don't know enough about them to judge these gorgeous little dogs. But that's our culture - size does matter unfortunatly - and it's just a shame people have to be so mean about it. Your little 'awkward' baby :p (KIDDING !!) will grow up into a beautiful butterfly and don't let anyone tell you differently. Who couldn't love a yorkie puppies face at ANY Size ??? |
I would like to see pictures too of both of them. Is Annie Belle your other yorkie? I hope you told your nosy mother in law just what you said to us. |
People are just rude, it would be so much better if we just always tried to encourage each other. |
except 5-6lb isn't big at all:lol tears i love people who think they know everything about yorkies. susanah is my cats name too by the way:) |
4 Attachment(s) Aw, that's not big. That is smaller than Lacy was at 14 weeks (she was like 3.2 at 12 weeks) and Lacy is 7lbs now, so I'm sure your yorkie will stay within the standard. I love all colors on yorkies, but the darker ones are my favorite (maybe I'm partial LOL). Lacy went through an awkward stage too. One lady told me she thought Lacy was part schnauzer because she had long hair...made me so mad! Anyway here are a couple pictures of her as she grew up: 1. Baby Lacy (11 weeks) 2. She's like 14 weeks here - I call this her awkward stage (look how HUGE her ears are!) 3. Lacy at 1 1/2 years 4. Lacy now at almost 3 years I would love to see a picture of your puppy. I'm sure she's adorable! |

your mother-in-law is rude beyond belief ... 14 weeks old and weighs 3.2 pounds. that is not big ... pay no attention ... your baby is adorable .... |
1 Attachment(s) Yep, that is Susanah in my avatar. I'm giving her another day or two to settle in here at home then I'm breaking out the camera! Her ears are huge now too and still floppy, but she's teething like mad and I really need to shave them. I was careful not to let her see that I was angry. I smiled and explained to her about breed size standard. I'm fairly certain it fell on deaf ears. Annie-Belle was my first yorkie. She passed away in March. The attached pic is her. |
Most people aren't as educated as some YTers. So, just grin and bear it. What does it matter....you love your baby anyway and she's perfect for you. |
I think Lacy is so pretty! She has such a beautiful face! |
Annie-Belle was precious !! I'm sorry for your loss. At least your mom in law didn't ask you if you got a silky - that's usually the other comment people seem to like to make ...like they even KNOW what the difference is.:D |
It does not matter what anyone else says about your baby--fur or skin--you will love them anyway...RIGHT! Your little furbaby is adorable. I can't wait for you to "break out the camera" and start snapping!!!!! |
I'm so sorry your MIL was rude and insulted your baby! Maybe I should take Phoebi to visit her.....all 12 lbs. of her! I dare her to insult my baby...lol! |
I think she is ADORABLE!! People are rude and they will ALWAYS think they know way more than you will ever. You should hear some of the things that we hear....#1 question with our little Nadia that is from our breeding and we are keeping...she is almost 1 1/2 lbs at 18 weeks. When are you going to breed your teacup yorkie? We want one! Tsk tsk |
What do monster -in-laws know anyway!!! :bleh: He he he. I'm with you, my Memphis could weight 200 lbs and I would still love him just as much!! |
Susanah is beautiful and not big, how small do these little babies have to be before people quit saying stuff like that.. |
I think tiny yorkies are cute. I really do. I mean, how can you NOT think a little 2 lb dog is just adorable? However, I am very well aware of the health risks, etc and would be a nervous wreck is Susanah was that small. I was a nervous wreck with Annie-Belle and she was 4 pounds. Just like when I was in TX and she had a lady come in to purchase a yorkie puppy. She showed her the girls she had available and told her they would most likely only be about 3 pounds (she was letting the woman know this because the woman had another dog and a small child and the yorkie could easily be hurt by either one) and the woman looked at her and said, "Oh. I really wanted a teeny tiny one." 3 pounds IS teeny tiny!!!! |
awww, your baby is gorgeous! And I'm laughing at what constitutes BIG for some people. Send your MIL over to me. My boy weighs 14 pounds. Let's discuss BIG. Go ahead and tell me he's not a Yorkie. :D |
you know I get so sick and tired of people judging Yorkies by their size. Just because the AKA and ACA etc have deemed the perfect Yorkie to be no bigger than 7lbs or smaller than whatever. Banjo is 9 months and is 13lbs I dont care. Hes great. Robust, agile, fast, full of character, can jump up and off the bed etc etc. We love him the way he is. You have no idea how your dog is going to be when they grow up, size, colour, wether his ears stick up, how straight his back is etc etc. We were out at a park the other day and this lady said thats the biggest yorkie I've ever seen, are you sure hes not a silky:rolleyes: I said hes pure Yorkie, I should know and I prefer him this size and walked off, but I was annoyed at her attitude. Love them the way they are is what I say:) |
Gizmo is 9 1/2 weeks and 2.12 lb so he'll be about the same size I'm sure. I think he's perfect. And she is too. |
Shes beautiful....!!!!!! and dont let anyone tell you differently!!! They all go through that awkward stage.. and then become young adults and turn out beautiful. Shes a living doll already, she will be GORGEOUS when she grows up..:D |

Your little girl is ADORABLE and she looks tiny to me! She has such a kissable face! What a little sweetie pie. |
My baby is 6lbs even! I have always seen him as being so little! Lol. At my apartment complex there are some other yorkies and they are all much bigger than my lil man. They look like they could be 10-12 pounders. I have seen some smaller yorkies but they are the teacup yorkies. As for a normal standard yorkie...5-6lbs seems normal and is very small compared to most all other dogs! ;) |
I thought of this thread yesterday when my MIL came over to see Sugar for the first time. After she said how cute & well behaved Sugar was she said, "She's big for a Yorkie." (She saved herself by complimenting her first.) She has an aunt who had Yorkies many, many years ago so I'm not sure if she even remembers what size they were. Sugar is 10 pounds which is big for a Yorkie, but she's smaller than my cat so I think she's pretty stinkin' small. I laughed to myself when she said it because I remembered reading this thread. I adopted Sugar because I wanted a new member for our family, not as a show dog so I don't care how much she weighs. As long as I can pick her up and cuddle with her it doesn't matter one bit to me. I'm glad that I had read all of your comments though because I do have a tendancy to get defensive when someone says anything negative about someone I love. Because of all of you I was just able to say, "Oh, I think she's pretty small, Shadow (my cat) is bigger than her and she fits in the girls doll strollers." Ha! It felt good not to worry about what she thought. Thanks! |

Your baby really is beautiful! I'm having weight issues with Bobby too! He's only about 3 months old & he already weighs about 4lbs. I'm not an expert so I don't know if that's normal or not but I love him all the same. Oh & mother-in-laws just never know what to say, lol! |
