How long does it take yorkies coat to grow? This is my first yorkie. How long does it take for their hair to grow to a full coat? |

On average usually in a silk coat 18 mos to 2 years also for the face furnishings to grow which is slower and that part takes longer because you are going from the face to the floor. Growing face furnishings is kind of difficult usually. A coarser hard silk coat is slower growing but will usually hold colour. Soft coats in general, tend to grow very quickly. |

Everything described in the standard is describing an adult yorkie. |

You were more detailed in your explanation that I was. |

Another coat question....I had a groomer tell me not to cut Molly too short while she was young (3 mos) so that her adult coat would grow in better. Is this true? Carla |

If you want a medium length coat just let it grow to that. IF it is a soft or cotton coat, might as well trim it as it will be a matted mess all the time pretty much. |
The reason why not to trim the yorkie at young age In my opinion the reason why we should not trim the yorkie when they are young is to avoid his hair grow curly like poodle. If you trim or shave your yorkie before 8 months, the hair will grow curly not flat like what you see in the yorkie dog show. In general the hair grow 1 cm every months but it depends also on the hair type. Like us, human, have their hair grow more rapidly than others. This is what I have heard from some groomers not to shave the yorkie hair when they are young (not before 8 months). |

This is a misnomer. Shaving a pup or trim a coat prior to 8 months of age does not cause a coat to grow curly......If it's a good silk coat, it's a good silk coat. |

I had a bitch once when I started out. Never cut her coat until she was well over a year. As she got older her coat curled and was forever more. Moreover, I had a little 4 mos old that went flying around the corner in the old house I was living in and she drove a huge sliver into her side. It lodged about 4 inches down from the point of entry. I told the Vet to shave whatever he had to be sure to get everything out. He did a surgical shave along her side. Her coat grew back straight as can be. I showed her at about 2 years old, got 6 pts on her well on her way to her championship then she got pyometria and I was not going to fool with it so spayed her and she went to a pet home. |

How do you tell? I've noticed some of you were saying that some yorkies naturally have the silk coat, others' coats are coarser. I was wondering if anybody knew how I would be abe to tell what kind of coat my 3 month old will have? Any telltale signs, specific features, touch? |

There are different grades of silk coats. |
I keep my yorkie's coat medium length and I find myself trimming it once a month to month and a half to keep it the desired lengthed. |
Coat type and texture is one reason why show breeders will run puppies on. Whether a pup is silk or soft coated really can't be determined usually until 4 -5 months of age and then it can be iffy as some modified coats can keep you guessing for a while as to what you have. |
Can anyone give me some advice? I appreciate your opinion Lorraine. I have the idea of not shaving the yorkie hair before H months from some groomers who said that to me. They might be wrong. Btw, I'm thinking about changing my shampoo line. I will consider using Chris Christensen or Petsilk or Purepaws or Vellus lines but I still can't decide which one I should give a try. Can anyone tell me which is the best for my yorkshire; I have a silky yorkshire coat. His coat is very soft like silk. Can anyone explain me also a good way to make a hot oil treatment? |

I use Alberto VO-5 weekly and found it to work great Each of the brands you've mentioned are good. And you're picking is all dependent on the reaction of you dog's coat to each. I know that isn't much help. I've used them all and each dog's coat reacted differently to each product. |
Sorry I forgot to add a couple of great lines I've had tremendous luck with is Laser Lites and Plush Puppy. |

I have a show Toy Poodle breeder friend that I groomed for her for a year once a month. I learned lots from her, she learned a little from me. I have a Show Pom breeder friend who taught me how to properly groom a Pom. I have yet to see a professional groomer turn out a decent grooming job on any of these breeds. I learned the Terrier breeds by goin gto shows and watching them in the grooming area and asking questions which is what my grooming trainer told me to do, so I did. That's partly how I got going to dog shows in the first place and of course, the rest is history. For shampoo, I have been using the A1 All Systems Super cleaning Conditioning shampoo. A little goes a long way, I love the product and use it in my pet grooming as well. |
Lacy will be three in September and she has a coarser coat and it grows SLOW. I don't think she'll have a full coat until she's like 6 years old! It is getting longer but very slowly. If any of you have seen her pictures, I have never cut her hair, other than a slight trim to even it up once. So far this is as long as it has gotten. |

Lacy's just a pet. Although I think she's a beautiful girl, she's in not show quality LOL. I wouldn't trade her for the world though! I have started to accept that her hair may never be really long, but I will continue to let it grow and if it does get long, awesome, and if not - oh well...hopefully the next yorkie I get will have a coat that grows better. I'm going to try a Hot Oil treatment on her tonight for the first time. I do keep her clean (weekly baths) and brushed well everyday, but she does wear clothes every day so I know that does contribute to the hair breaking off. I'm just glad she has straight and shiny hair and great coloring :-) |
4 Attachment(s) Hi everybody, here is my yorkie Kenzo's pics after his grooming today. He just went out with his brother Hanzo today for a long walk. I bathed him as soon as we arrived at home. Hi Mardelin, how is the result of Laser lites? Could you tell me more about it? Have you ever tried C C products also? How do you compare it with CC product? |
Also thank you to Lorraine for your good advice. Do you show your dog also? |

What do you consider a full coat? You mean a floor length skirt? If so by the time Diesel was 14 months his was maybe an inch off the floor. The first time I had him cut was last August. She cut his beard and face REALLY short. I just trimmed it a few weekes ago and it had alreay grown out for the most part. His hair grows really fast. |
