| Weird Smelling Pee? I'm dog-sitting my friends male yorkie this week and he is about 6 or 7 years old, I forget his exact age. He was rescued when he was already about 5 and never potty trained and despite my friends constant attempts to potty train him the past 2 years he still pee/hikes all over the house. The vet said because of his age that he will probobly always do this. So he has to wear belly bands and when I change his belly bands I notice his pee smells really weird. Sort of sweet/minty smell. Looks funny colored too, not very yellow, its almost clear with a bit of a yellow brown color. This cant be normal, do you think this is a sign of something?

| I don't know about the color of the pee but is there a chance you're smelling the laundry detergent and softener that was used to wash the belly band? If his urine isn't too concentrated the smell wouldn't be so great and therefore you might just be smelling the results of a wet belly band. Just a thought.....

| In humans, a sweet smelly pee usually means diabetes but I don think dogs can get diabetes. Maybe it's a urinary tract infection? IDK |

| I was gonna say what buttercup just said. Fruity urine smell indicates diabetes in humans. Just a thought.

| Yes, dogs can be diabetic. Same common symptoms as in humans-excessive thirst, excessive urination and weight loss.

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | ah yes diabetes, i didn't even think of that. another symptom is weight gain. basically any significant weight change is cause to worry. Diabetes can be checked by getting a blood glucose test at the vet. some require a 12 hour fasting period.

I was possibly thinking diabetes too as this was the only thing I could find when I googled 'sweet smelling dog urine'. This is what concerned me and makes me think he may need to see the vet, I am pretty sure his weird smelling odor has to be a symptom of something.

beneful??? yuck. that food has been known to cause many health problems in dogs. it could be the source of the smelly pee and possibly another health problem.
