Has anyone ever made a dog ramp? 1 Attachment(s) For a long time we have just had our box spring and bed on the floor, which has made it easy for Loki and Sammy to get on and off. I made a step out of one of those wood crates from Michaels and covered it with batting & fabric. Sammy uses it, Loki doesn't. Anyway, this weekend we put our bed back up on the frame and now the bed is too high for either of them, even with the step. I want to make a ramp or steps. It doesn't have to be very wide, but high enough so they can get on the bed without jumping more than 12 inches. The bed is about 30" high. Everything I see is $100-200. We have a circular saw, jig saw, staple gun, etc. so I think i can make one for much less than that. My question is - do I need to make a plywood frame? Or can I just use foam? I can sew, so covering it will be easy. I'm curious if any of you have ever done this and how to get started. I'd like to make one that looks like this. I'm not really a fan of the wooden staircase kind. Covered steps would be OK though. Or - can someone suggest one that does not cost $100? The *cheap* ones really are cheap, and small. THANKS! |
Hi, At my local Wal-Mart on the as-seen-on-tv isle, there is a pretty cheap (I don't know how flimsy) steps that is for pets. It's looks something like: http://www.amazon.com/SEEN-TV-DOGGY-.../dp/B000H7OBV0 Wal-Mart has a good return policy too if you find that it doesn't fit your needs. Good Luck! |
I used the Seen on TV stairs from Walmart on there very sturdy but I got a new bed and they are not high enough even if you get the extention for them I"m in the same boat. |
If I remember correctly, Willow has one that her dad made for Kalina. |
I am sorry I don't have time right now to look this up for you but you might want to do a search on steps or ramps because there was a few threads a while back about this subject. there were some pretty good ones made by members. I am at work or I would take the time to look for it my self. sorry. |
Check these out!!! I hope i did the link right! If not you can find then on the mydogramp.com site. They are made from pvc. It looks like they would be really easy to make. Just need the pipe, a hacksaw and cover it! What could go wrong???? Right???? http://www.mydogramp.com/pet_ramps_steps_beds.html |
I have seen the WalMart steps - I think they are the same ones at Bed Bath & Beyond. Unfortunately, they are too short and the steps are too shallow. Mine don't actually use the steps - it's more like they use the one step as a trampoline. Plus, I think I could make something way better for $30 in materials. The PVC is interesting. I was thinking wood, but I'll keep that in mind. Plywood isn't that expensive, I may just go buy some and see what I can do. I was just hoping for some plans or something. The ones I found didn't have pictures or were not what I'm looking for. |
oh what a nice idea! that would be light weight enough to put in our rv. thank you. |
Super cute and CHEAP These are steps not a ramp, but very cute and I think only $15.99 http://www.collectionsetc.com/Item76077.aspx |
I use an ottoman at the foot of my bed... Hope is so small and my mix breed Tinker has bad knees and they cant get up on the bed... the ottoman works great! I use it for a stool as well and Tinker likes to louge there(gives me moree bed space... lol) good luck if you decide to build d |
I used a box wrapped with towel :) |
I bought a foam ramp with a cover and it was well worth the 100.00. The dogs love it and even sleep on the top of it. They always use it and have never tried to jump off the bed. If you want to go less expensive maybe get some foam from a craft store and see if that works, |
Check out eBay. I got a REALLY nice homemade one on eBay for about $65. It's carpeted and even has a couple of paw prints on it. On the side is a little opening but they never go inside. |
know I have Never made one but I wood like too... |
I Googled, "ramp plans" and got a bunch of hits on both web and image search. Most of them are for skaters/bikers, but you could scale them down to fit your needs/budget. |
