Has anyone ever made a dog ramp? 1 Attachment(s) For a long time we have just had our box spring and bed on the floor, which has made it easy for Loki and Sammy to get on and off. I made a step out of one of those wood crates from Michaels and covered it with batting & fabric. Sammy uses it, Loki doesn't. Anyway, this weekend we put our bed back up on the frame and now the bed is too high for either of them, even with the step. I want to make a ramp or steps. It doesn't have to be very wide, but high enough so they can get on the bed without jumping more than 12 inches. The bed is about 30" high. Everything I see is $100-200. We have a circular saw, jig saw, staple gun, etc. so I think i can make one for much less than that. My question is - do I need to make a plywood frame? Or can I just use foam? I can sew, so covering it will be easy. I'm curious if any of you have ever done this and how to get started. I'd like to make one that looks like this. I'm not really a fan of the wooden staircase kind. Covered steps would be OK though. Or - can someone suggest one that does not cost $100? The *cheap* ones really are cheap, and small. THANKS! |
Hi, At my local Wal-Mart on the as-seen-on-tv isle, there is a pretty cheap (I don't know how flimsy) steps that is for pets. It's looks something like: http://www.amazon.com/SEEN-TV-DOGGY-.../dp/B000H7OBV0 Wal-Mart has a good return policy too if you find that it doesn't fit your needs. Good Luck! |
I used the Seen on TV stairs from Walmart on there very sturdy but I got a new bed and they are not high enough even if you get the extention for them I"m in the same boat. |
If I remember correctly, Willow has one that her dad made for Kalina. |
I am sorry I don't have time right now to look this up for you but you might want to do a search on steps or ramps because there was a few threads a while back about this subject. there were some pretty good ones made by members. I am at work or I would take the time to look for it my self. sorry. |
Check these out!!! I hope i did the link right! If not you can find then on the mydogramp.com site. They are made from pvc. It looks like they would be really easy to make. Just need the pipe, a hacksaw and cover it! What could go wrong???? Right???? http://www.mydogramp.com/pet_ramps_steps_beds.html |
I have seen the WalMart steps - I think they are the same ones at Bed Bath & Beyond. Unfortunately, they are too short and the steps are too shallow. Mine don't actually use the steps - it's more like they use the one step as a trampoline. Plus, I think I could make something way better for $30 in materials. The PVC is interesting. I was thinking wood, but I'll keep that in mind. Plywood isn't that expensive, I may just go buy some and see what I can do. I was just hoping for some plans or something. The ones I found didn't have pictures or were not what I'm looking for. |
oh what a nice idea! that would be light weight enough to put in our rv. thank you. |
Super cute and CHEAP These are steps not a ramp, but very cute and I think only $15.99 http://www.collectionsetc.com/Item76077.aspx |
I use an ottoman at the foot of my bed... Hope is so small and my mix breed Tinker has bad knees and they cant get up on the bed... the ottoman works great! I use it for a stool as well and Tinker likes to louge there(gives me moree bed space... lol) good luck if you decide to build d |
I used a box wrapped with towel :) |
I bought a foam ramp with a cover and it was well worth the 100.00. The dogs love it and even sleep on the top of it. They always use it and have never tried to jump off the bed. If you want to go less expensive maybe get some foam from a craft store and see if that works, |
Check out eBay. I got a REALLY nice homemade one on eBay for about $65. It's carpeted and even has a couple of paw prints on it. On the side is a little opening but they never go inside. |
know I have Never made one but I wood like too... |
I Googled, "ramp plans" and got a bunch of hits on both web and image search. Most of them are for skaters/bikers, but you could scale them down to fit your needs/budget. |
My sister made steps for her chihuahua's like the as-seen-on tv kind. She says they work great. Duke used a phone book to get on a stool then he got on my cedar chest then the bed. Pretty smart. but I might have to get steps for the next little guy/girl. Let me know if anyone has plans. |
About 10 years ago, we bought a bed that was really high. My Min-Pin had a bad back and we didn't want her jumping so I designed a Japanese 'Tansu' chest to go at the foot of the bed and a friend built it for me. Later, the same dog had problems getting up on the couch. I had seen foam steps in the Hammacher Schlemmer catalog but they were really expensive, so I figured out what size steps I needed and went to my local foam shop. They cut the foam and glued it together for me and then I covered it with fabric. It was pretty inexpensive, and I ended up with steps that blended in a little better with my room. I still have both of my 'steps' and now they are in service for my 2 new Yorkies. Sometimes, Cora will stop half way up the foam steps and just curl up right there to go to sleep! |

I did find some uncovered foam steps on ebay. I should have thought to check ebay, but I haven't had much luck there lately. I might try those. I prefer foam since I'll most likely trip over them! I'll let you know how it works out! |

These are a piece of junk! Do not order them!:thumbdown |
Thanks for the info. I assume they fell apart or something? We took a piece of plywood and stapled/glued carpet scraps to it. It seems to work fine. Nothing fancy, but easy to put away when company comes over. |
Well, I was going to BUY foam... 1 Attachment(s) But my mom told me she had some in her basement. My parents have everything in their basement. Anyway... Here's what I've got so far. If anyone out there is cutting foam - an electric knife is the way to go. We only use ours on Thanksgiving anyway, so it's good to have another use for it. I'm going to sew a slipcover for these. Sammy LOVED them. We tried some different heights and she was running up and down them. Later when I put them away she peered over the bed and saw they weren't there and gave me a look like "HEY!" |
we just got really cheap stairs from target for $20. No 'real' assembly required, just snap some stuff in place and place this furry cover over it. They're about a foot tall. Before I bought the stairs, I just used Peekaboo's old cage/crate thing with a blanket covering it, for him to jump up on. http://www.target.com/gp/detail.html...sin=B000E8HQ9Q Target users gave it good ratings too lol. |
wait lol, there's only 2 ratings that I didnt actually read, but I like them. The stairs are kind of short compared to the bed but Peeka has no problem jumping from the last one to the bed. |
Those would be OK for getting on our couch, but our bed is 30" high. What I've discovered is that once you need over 12 inches the pre-made ones get really expensive. |
Don't make the same mistake I did! LOL Check out this link http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=83915 I'm sure the foam will be great! My "ramp" is a little too short for the bed! Gizmo looked like he was mountain climbing, but the board with carpet works well as a ramp for the couch. The only thing... ..use different fabric from your carpet! I can't tell you how many times I've stumbled on it since it's camoflaged so well. |
Reading Shanna's suggestion on the other thread reminded me! I put a basket of laundry by the couch one day and Gizmo used that with no problem. The next day when it was a little less full, he fell further than he intended. I heard this little "yip!" and found him looking at me from inside the basket. I thought it was funny AFTER I made sure he was okay! |

Sammy yips for attention when she is in her crate, but she will happily nap in the bottom of a laundry basket... I liked Shana's suggestion of the ottoman from Target. Those cube ones are perfect, and everything is on sale right now with all the college stuff coming out. Last year I found lots of fun potential dog stuff in with the college stuff. Loki got an AWESOME floor pillow that is his favorite bed. |
