Be very weary about buying a teacup, micro mini, ect... Yorkie
I am sure you all know how much more expensive they are.
I paid top dollar for one of my yorkies from a website in Oklahoma that was supposes to only get to 2.5 pounds
well, he came to me less than that but he was starved, you could see all of his back bones. Now he is a 7 pound boy. I still love him very much but this is a big scam that alot of pet stores and internet breeders pull.
It is very important you see the pup in person and the pups parents before you buy. this is the only way of knowing the true size.
Just because the website or store looks nice, does NOT mean they are honest.

No one should trust any breeder that advertises those kinds of dogs. No ethical breeder will try to sell them, because they do not exist. Also, no ethical breeder would promise the adult weight of a puppy, because it is completely unpredictable.

You are very lucky that your puppy was only starved, and not sick. And within standard weight, no less. :D

hey what was the website? my sisters friend got two long hair chis from a site in oklahoma and she was very happy.. but i looked at the website and there was so many red flags

a 7 lb Yorkie is much healthier than a 2.5 pounder .... consider yourself lucky ...

The breeder I found my newest puppy from did advertise as teacup, but I inquired about why she used it and she basically said she's always done that and isn't going to change her terminology for others... it's just what she calls them. She is a truly good breeder though, so I didn't think much of it, however she didn't promise a specific size puppy to me either :).

I have a small baby right now (LILLY) wieghts only 2 pounds at 5months and I hope she reaches 4lb.
She is so tiny a fragil but do not tell her that Lilly thinks she is a Killer.
Her nickname is TROUBLE

good evening all, i have a 14mo. girl that weighs 3.2 lbs. she is so fraile, but she looks at me with those big eyes and i just melt. she can get by with anything. then i have a 7mo. 6lb girl. very dominant, and now in puppy school. she is so very different. she doesnt appear to require my attention as much. and she loves getting dressed up to go. it is true!! When I got Lacey, I was told she would be about 4-5 lbs...I did not pay top dollar (I dont think I did) and now at almost 8 months she is'nt even 2 lbs..I doubt she'll get much bigger, but I wish she would..tiny dogs are so fragile.

not only knowing the parents but the grandparents. if you know your breeder and have done all the background ck, i don't see anything wrong with seeing photos and adopting the baby. all three of my babies came from a breeder in tx and i had them shipped to me. i have never been more happy.
even if they were in your area and you went to the home and saw the parents, this does not guarentee the size. this happened to me. both parents were small 5-6lbs but my kirby ended up being 12lbs.

too bad you didn't find YT before you bought your puppy. you would have known that there is no such thing as a micro mini or teacup. It is just an advertising ploy to get more money. As a breeder, I can tell you that it is only a guesstimate what size they will be. I have some larger ones and some smaller ones but I sell them all the same usually.

GREAT POST ! I totally agree and that poor dog - I have a feeling it's pretty common for PET STORES and unethical breeders to do this ...Sad for the dog that's for sure...:( anyone who would intentionally starve an animal to make it appear smaller is SICK and cruel. But it's the Buyers that are prompting this ...if everyone wasn't so obsessed with size this wouldn't be happening. We're seeing way too many very sick dogs these days.

When I got Tino he was not advertised as a teacup or anything like that~ His adult weight is 3.5 lbs.

He is a happy healthy stud~ Only thing is with breeders who use that term make it sound as if 5 lb yorkies are huge...THEY ARE SMALL!! People don't understand how little some of the dogs really are. My baby is tiny and I didnt realise how tiny he would be until I brought him home. My breeder is wonderful if you want to check her out she is at dandieyorkies.com , she keeps in touch with me to this day, I bought Tino a year and a half ago.:thumbup:

AMEN! Both of my boy's parents were well below the 7-lb standard -- and he weighs 14 pounds.:)

I didnt pay anymore for bailey then her much larger brothers were going for she was not sold to me as anything but a "smaller girl" I love her to death and I do enjoy all the attention she gets when we go out however, at 1.9 lbs and almost 8 months I do worry constantly about her health, rushing her to the vet the moment she coughs or sneezes and when guests come over or we go to visit another house I always have to remind people that she is there, so they dont step on her. Im always worried about hypoglycemia with her and let me tell you I WAS A NERVOUS WRECK when she went in for her spay. I wish I could get her to gain a little weight, but she just dosnt seem to gain any. Her vet says based on her structer she is average weight but goodness it is a full time job taking care of my baby! Count yourself blessed that your little one isnt this tiny. Like other people have said on this post and others Even a 14 lb yorkie is still small in the dog world. When I get another one I most definatly will look for one around 5-7lbs

As far as petstores:
Most of the people working at petstores these days (or at least in my area) are all young girls between 16-19 I would say, and they are completely uneducated about dogs its not there fault, its the petstores fault for employing them and not educating them. (maybe they are afraid that if they educate them they might wisen up about puppymills and not want to work there anymore) Anyway, any young girl that applys for a job at a pet store and says I WANT TO WORK HERE BECAUSE I LOVE PUPPYS! Is hired! To make a long story short. I was at a petstore (that sells puppies) But only because I was looking at clothes for my girl Bailey who I brought in with me. A young girl who worked there probably about 17 or 18 came up to me to ask me all about my "teacup yorkie" then I told her that Bailey was just small and that there was no such thing as a "teacup yorkie" and she assured me that I was wrong and that I may not have a "teacup" (bailey is 1.9lbs and 8 mo.) But that they sell teacups ALL THE TIME! She seemed so confident that she was right because after all, she WORKS at a petstore, surely she would know more about dogs then a stupid customer. She walked away to go tell her friends (about her same age) who worked there about how stupid this customer was. At this point I was so frusterated and upset that this young girl was so uneducated, I noticed they had a magazine rack with a bunch of magazines for different breeds. Then I saw that they had the same one I had at home a yorkie magazine and I rememberd that there is an article about the "myth " of "teacup" yorkies in there. So i open up the magazine turned to that article, walked over to her and her friends and handed it to her and told her "here, educate yourself" and her jaw droped. She glanced over it and then walked away without saying a word. Needless to say, I was satisfied.

As a breeder exhibitor, I breed for standard. However, that does not guarantee that a dinky-do-nothing doesn't show up in a litter. But, I don't sell these wee ones, I won't sell potential heartache. I place them in preapproved homes that know how to care for wee ones and the possibility of high vet bills.

:eek: I would've been pissed too! Thank goodness that magazine was there (except I probably would've slapped her with it, lol).

I was at a pet store the other day, and I was asking the girl working there about the yorkie puppy (I couldn't resist). The puppy was 11 weeks old and 3 1/2 pounds, and she said it was a teacup, and it wouldn't get any bigger. :rolleyes:

Well actually in my case my boy was soon diagnosed with Leg Perthes.
This all happened about a year ago and about 6 months ago I posted about it along with the address of the website when I first joined on to yorkietalk. but I have been hearing and seeing this alot in pet stores and internet breeders so I wanted to bring up my past experience.

I just visited the website that I bought my boy from today ( It's been awhile since I have done so) and it states in very large font that Don Montergery does not sell puppies on their website anymore. So apparently I wasn't his only unsatified customer.

Well its a good thing he got shut down...too bad you and your little one have had to suffer with medical problems though...:(

When I got Conner, the breeder told me he would be 4 - 5 pounds, and my vet concurred. Now he is 15 months old and 10 pounds, and I love every ounce!!

I didn't realize myself how some breeders advertise these little pups..my son had me go to the "you tube" website and there is was, all these crazy people taking videos of their "micro" yorkies and how expensive they were, etc. If you go to that website, just look at the one entitled "Yorkie baby - Teacup and X MICRO!" ..it's really sad that there are people breeding for itty bitty puppies who you know will have such a fragile life...this woman was proud that her teenie tiny female had produced a puppy that was 1.something ounces...geesh!

WOW ppl out there are so ignorant! I was told that Teddy would be about 3 lbs full grown, he is now 9 lbs!!:rolleyes:

Ugh...I hate how uneducated puppy-selling petstore employees are! One time I was in the Puppy Store here (HATE THAT PLACE!!!) and was looking at the puppies. There was a miniature schnauzer puppy that looked almost fullgrown already. I asked one of the employees how old he was and she said 3 months. I was surprised and asked how much he weighed right then and she said...oh, I don't know but he shouldn't get much bigger -maybe just fill out a bit. Okay...not an expert on schnauzers but a 3 month old puppy is going to grow ALOT! Idiots...

I have a 7lb yorkie so I'm sure when I tell people there is no such thing as a teacup some of them are thinking that I am just saying that since mine isn't tiny. So I love to see people with tiny ones educating people about there being no teacups. Way to go!

I work at a dog boutique right now. We sell dog clothes and specialty items and have a doggie day spa. Someone asked me if I knew a breeder for teacup yorkies today. I told them there was no such think as a teacup and that a yorkshire terrier is anywhere from 1-7lbs. I told them I didn't know of any breeders in the area but told them to come here and post and I'm sure someone here would. It's hard to educate people at work though because I don't want to offend customers so I have to be careful about how I do it... but when I'm not at work I don't LOL

Our first Yorkie was a max of 7 pounds, so I wasn't quite prepared when Ozzie weighed more than that at something like 8 months! :D
He now weighs 14 pounds and will be 10 on Friday. I wouldn't have it any other way -- I think having a bigger guy has way less hazards to guard against.:p

I totally agree with you. I purchased a puppy from a Pet Shop in Gatlingburg TN who said that the puppies parents weighed 4 lbs a piece and that he would not get any bigger. He is now 3 years old and weighs 7-8 lbs. I love him anyway and he is part of the family. I know that you cannot always tell the size, but from now on I will only buy from someone who has both parents that I can view. He will definitely not breed with me 3.5 lb baby girl. So now I will be looking for him a new wife. :) :(

My breeder did the same thing advertised them as teacups but like yours, that's just what she calls them. She is a really good breeder. I would definitely buy from her again. When I went to pick him out, she asked what size I wanted. I didnt really care one way or another. They were all so cute! She said most of them would be between 3-5lbs based on the parents sizes. The mother is 5lbs and the dad is 3lbs.
