What do you do when it rains? For those of you whose babies are trained to potty outside, what do you do when it rains? It has been raining for 3-4 days here in Houston and it's hard to let Buttercup out to go potty. What I'm doing now is confining him to his room, which he would never pee/poop in and let him out when the rain slows down. But it's been raining nonstop for about 2 hours now and he's in his room crying to get out to potty. What other options are there? |
I know what you mean. Kobi is mostly trained to go outside (and I want him eventually to be 100 percent that way), but when it rains, I let him go on the pee pads. Maybe you should get a couple for when it's really bad out. Other than that, maybe get him a rain jacket? Not many good ideas from me...sorry... |
Morgan still goes outside when it rains no matter what. She's learned to hug the house where the rain hits less. She quickly pees and poops and runs right back inside. no problems |
I have Minnie pee pad trained its June and still raining in Washington State.:( |
Mine are trained to go inside but they both have raincoats too, cute ones :) |
Conner has a covered area where he goes potty - no snow, no rain, no problems. |
I take Lily out on a leash so when it's raining, I just get my boots on and we go out under an umbrella. She's quick and hates her feet getting wet so she usually goes and is ready to come back inside. It's not much fun for us though! |
Here in Germany, we can get light to hard rain all day long, for weeks at a time. SO I got the girls little rain jackets. When it rains, I just stick them in it and put there leash on and out we go. |

Both mine go outside. At first, when it rained they didn't want to go but (mean ole mom) pushed them out the door and didn't let them in until they peed. It only took a few times before they learnd to go quick and you get back in. So now I just open the door and say "go pee, hurry". Now thunder and lightening are a different story. Bubba would hold it till he burst rather than go out. |
My neighbor loaned me a pee pad and he just won't use it. He was peepad trained when I first got him but never used it again after 4 months of age. I don't have a raincoat for him and I think I just might have to get one now. He did eventually go out to pee but he peed under my covered patio in the backyards and rushed back in the house. I was looking for more options because when it rains, my grass gets nasty and muddy and then he'll get dirty and then that means another bath. Maybe I should get him some doggy shoes/boots to go along with the raincoat. Where can I find the raincoat? |
We have a concrete covered porch. I got some cheap green outdoor carpet and both of mine will go on the carpet when it is raining hard. If it is just raining a little bit, then they will run out and go under some of our bushes where they don't get rained on so much and go there. It is hard, I know. Rexy will not go in the house, but Rowdy will, so when it is raining, I have to be diligent about taking him out and standing out there with him till he goes. Good luck. |
I know they have raincoats at petsmart. Doggy boots would be cute too!! |
Thankfully Sadie will use the puppy pads when it's raining. Even if I take her out after it quits, she will absolutely NOT get in the wet grass. |
Well, when Tink has to go, she has to go Right Now! There is no time to put on a rain coat. So, out comes the umbrella! Fortunately there is good grass in the front of my patio so mud isn't a problem. I just take a dishtowel with me when we go out to dry her feet. My Indy used to go the the closet when it was raining and bark for me to get the umbrella. He would not go without it. He'd sit in front of the door til he croaked but he would not get his head wet. Feet? No problem. |
Mine wont go outside when its raining but our front orchis covered and they will go out there. Also our backyard has a gazebo right outside of our back door and they will go in there |
Mine really hates to go outside in the rain; it is more that she doesn't want to get her feet wet. But if I go out and walk her to where I want her to go (and I get wet too), I can get her to do her business in a big hurry. Usually she will potty outside, but often we find a surprise in the house on days when it is raining. She just doesn't want to stand out there and get into position long enough to get the "job" done? |
We watch the forecast a lot and if it even looks like rain we go outside before it starts. For those lingering rains we wait until it lets up if we can, but they hate to get their feet wet so they go quickly and near the house. If it's cooler out I throw a t-shirt on them that i can strip off when they come in so I don't have to dry them off. Loki is so good he will even wipe his feet. Sammy has to get dried off. It helps tremendously if I go outside with them. If not, they run out there, get to the end of the porch, see the rain and think *Ooohh I don't think so!" and try to come back. If I stand out there, they don't try to run back to me and they go out and pee quickly. |
We head out with their shampoo and conditioner and just have bath time :D :D (not really) BIG Umbrella works well for Seth and Sasha, and they make it quick, they do not like the rain. I don't get it because they love the pool and their bathtime  |
Well I don't think I can even get mine out the door when it's raining. When I push the leash on him, he sits on the floor and try to hold himself back and would not budge. When I try to pick him up, he tries to run, like he really can go anywhere with the leash on him :p |

sure yorkies are small dogs, but they are dogs non the less and they can stand to go out in the rain. |

I dont have that problem, Bruizer will go potty outside rain snow or shine, but its the comeing back in we have a problem with, He finds every darn puddle he can whe hes out there and stomps through it and rolls in it. So we have a Bath EVERY time he comes in when its raining. But He loves the bath too. If I put him on a leash and take him out he will not go, he will play with the leash. So I think we might keep trying the leash and if he dont go it will be in to crate he goes........lol good luck with the rain coat and boots Youll have to post a pic. |
I live in the rainy state, and we have no choice, rain or shine we go outside. If they dont want to be outside, they get pretty quick with their potty, then head for cover ;) of course i get soaked too, as they are on a retractable  |
I wouldn't know.......It hasn't rained in Indiana in a month!!!!! |
We sometimes have horrible weather here. You name it - blizzards and ice, heavy downpours, and high wind with thunderstorms and lots of lightning. So, I've always trained mine dually to use pads in the attached garage at night or in bad weather. It has worked out great. They always preferred to go outside when it's nice, but not at night or in bad weather. |
Autumn is trained for outside. When it is raining she still goes out. She does not seem to care very much. She usually comes to the door looking like a drowned rat! |
Mine use the pee pads when it is raining, but I hope to have them 100% outside trained this summer. I am going to put a BIG beach umbrella off the patio and hopefully they will use it there, but it doesn't seem like I am going to have to use the umbrella since we have a only spinkles of rain in a month....send some of that rain to Kentucky....we are drying up here... |

My dog is dual trained and I hope it stay this way. I always have a peepad ready for him. He prefers to go out but if I'm somewhere and he's got to go because his belly hurts or something he will use peepad. This way I have a peace of mind that I do not have to go crazy if I've got stuck in a traffic or something else happened. When it is pouring "forever" then he uses pad also. If it's not that bad we put on raincoat and go. |
